From the Desk of Fr. Connolly

Where is the Mission Statement? We are a growing and changing parish family and Fr. Sorgie has asked the new Pastoral Council to review and modify our current Mis-sion Statement. The process of creating this statement will be a thoughtful and prayerful one so your patience is appreciated! Watch this page for the unveiling of the Mission Statement in an upcoming edition of the bulletin and please pray for the Pastoral Council as they are inspired to create it.

L ater this year, Blessed Paul VI will be raised to the altars as a saint. The canonization will take place in late October at the close of a meeting of the Syn-od of Bishops. It is fitting that his canonization is tak-ing place this year, which marks the 50th anniver-sary of what Pope Paul is perhaps best known for—his controversial encyclical Humanae Vitae. This significant document re-affirms the Church’s condemnation of artificial “birth control”—a mis-named concept, because as G.K. Chesterton cleverly puts it, “what is quaintly called Birth Control…is in fact, of course, a scheme for pre-venting birth in order to escape con-trol.” Today, the most transient and material things of this world—clothes, cars, expensive vacations—are more desired than the joy of children. Our secular world has forgotten God and the greatest blessing he gives to any family—new life. Malcolm Muggeridge poignantly details what our society has lost sight of: “There is no beauty, there is no joy, there is no compensation that anything could offer in the way of leisure, of so-called freedom from domestic du-ties, which could possibly compensate for one-thousandth part of the joy that an old man feels when he sees this beautiful thing: life beginning again as his ends, in those children that have come into the world through his love and through a mar-riage which has lasted through 50 and more years. I assure you that what I say to you is true, and that when you are that age there is nothing that this world can offer in the way of success, in the way of adventure, in the way of honors, in the way of varie-ty, in the way of so-called freedom, which could come within a hundredth part of measuring up to

that wonderful sense of having been used as an in-strument, not in the achievement of some stupid kind of personal erotic excitement, but in the reali-zation of this wonderful thing—human procreation.” --Malcom Muggeridge (Malcom Muggeridge on Hu-manae Vitae *The National Committee of Catholic Laymen+) Pope Paul VI stood firm in the midst of the mor-

al permissiveness which came under the guise of “freedom” in the 1960s and boldly proclaimed the truth of married love. But his message was a like a voice crying out in the wilder-ness. It is the cause of great contro-versy, and is despised and rejected. But what ultimately, is the message of Humanae Vitae? Put very briefly: that the long and uncomplicated tra-dition of a man and a woman falling in love, getting married, and having children is a good thing. That the family is the most important unit of society. And that the natural order of

all this should be respected. That this should be the subject of controversy shows how society has lost its way. May the message of the soon-to-be Saint Paul VI, in Humanae Vitae, help us to find it again.

Pvt xerz briefly: that the long and

vncomplicated tradition of a man and a zoman falling in loxe,

getting married, and haxing children is a

good thing.

Nexu Weekend’s Readings Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

First Reading: 2 Kings 4:42-44 Theological stories about hunger in the Old Tes-tament encourage solidarity among people and give a foretaste of Jesus’ multiplication of loaves in the gospel.

Second Reading: Ephesians 4:1-6 Paul has a specific focus in this section -- unity. He then outlines the keys to effective cooperation: humility, gentleness, patience, love, enthusiasm and peace, all fruits of the Holy Spirit at work.

Gospel: John 6:1-15 The gospel writer’s telling of the feeding of the 5,000 is not one of a miracle, but of a sign that Je-sus’ meal here is Eucharistic. In this meager lunch of loaves and fishes, we learn that even though we may not have much, Jesus can work with it.

In Ovr Commvnitz

If you have a question about any aspect of our Catholic Church and Faith, just drop us a note or call and we will answer them to the best of our ability.

151. "I notice a lot of new faces in Church. How can I make new parishioners feel welcome?" As children of God, we know that His home is our home, too. When we come for Mass or prayer time, He welcomes us with joy. So when you see someone new in church or the parish, He wants us tot share that welcome with all His children. wel-come new families with warmth. Share the space. Start by sitting in the middle

of the pew to make seating more welcoming for those coming after you. Or, look for someone sitting alone and take the seat beside her.

Make an impression. A cheerful smile and a quick "hello" can make an unfamiliar parish seem more friendly. After Mass is over, intro-duce yourself and offer to answer any question the newcomer may have.

Build connections. If you know about any up-coming parish events, invite them to join you. There are many groups and activities that will build bridges for you and for them, solidifying the connection.

Show love. Mass is a community celebration. Join in singing the hymns and share a meaning-ful Sign of Peace. Being a joyful child of God is a great witness to the welcome of our parish. -- Fr. Sorgie
