From the Desk of Fr. Paul December 10, 2017His Truth in the Here and Now of Your Life

Second Sunday of Advent

Next Week: Third Sunday of Advent1st Reading: Isaiah 61:1-2a, 10-11 • 2nd Reading: 1 Thessalonians 5:16-24 • Gospel: John 1:6-8, 19-28

First Reading: Isaiah 40:1-5, 9-11Isaiah recalled God’s promise of salvation. He awaits our improved relationship with God and conveys his message with beautiful imagery of nature reflecting what will come.

Gospel: Mark 1:1-8We now revert to the beginning of St. Mark’s Gospel. St. Mark begins his Gospel with the arrival of St. John the Bap-tist – when Jesus is a grown man about to enter His public ministry. The writers of the other synoptic Gospel go further back: St. Matthew begins with the Genealogy of Jesus and St. Luke begins with the Annunciation to Zechariah of the birth of St. John the Baptist.

Second Reading: 2 Peter 3:8-14St. Peter reflected on how different the passage of time is to God. While we might think of the long wait for the second coming in terms of “delay,” St. Peter interprets it as a time when God shows His patience by giving us the time we need to repent before the final judgment.

Parish Mission StatementWith the Eucharist as our source, Mary as our patroness and the Holy Spirit as our guide, we the Roman Catholic Parish of Immaculate Conception and Assumption of Our Lady, Tuckahoe, seek to give meaning to our faith by following Christ’s command to care for His people, by fostering actions that nourish both the

spiritual and social needs of our people and build community within and without our parish.

Time does not stand still. Everything changes; but there is Someone Who shall never change: Christ, Who is the Lord of History, Lord of the Universe, “The Alpha and Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and End” (Revelation 22:13) of all things. Our Lord Himself said, “… Heaven and Earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.” (Matthew 24:35) His word, His commandments are a firm anchor as we make our way through the turbulent waters of this life. If we live in His truth we shall stand the test of time and live on in His Kingdom.

The Servant of God, Madeleine Delbrêl, penned these words which I believe drive home this point:

Jesus speaks to each one of us in the “words of eternal life”; in our time and for our time, today for today. The words of Christ do not pass away but they are addressed to us in our particular human state which does pass. The call of Christ remains the same for all the Christians of the world and for all times. But each is challenged by this call precisely where he is, on the day that he is existing, and in the life and skin that is his. The commands of the Lord cannot change. They require of each human being a new heart. But this heart can only beat in our old heart, and only in our own concrete personal history and only in that particular home which we have reached in the course of our evolution as a human being. Faith does not have a life of its own outside the individual human situations and events with all the constant change and mobility. Agape-love which does not pass away works in the world through acts that are as transient as the world itself and which are intrinsically linked to its evolution. In the face of Jesus’ call there is no such thing as “the” correct response, the stock response. There is for each person, each day, “a” correct response.

May Our Lady help us to make that correct response each day!

Fr. Paul

119. Why do we use three purple and one pink can-dle in the Advent Wreathe?

Historically, the primary sanctuary color of Advent is Pur-ple (or violet). This is the color of penitence and fasting as well as the color of royalty to welcome the Advent of the King. The Royal purple of Advent is also similar to the Blood (red) purple of suffering used during Lent and Holy Week. This points to an important connection between Jesus’ birth and death. The Nativity, the Incarnation, can-not be separated from the Crucifixion. The purpose of Je-sus’ coming into the world, of the “Word made flesh” and dwelling among us, is to reveal God and His grace to the world through Jesus’ life and teaching, but also through his suffering, death, and resurrection. To reflect this em-phasis, originally Advent was a time of penitence and fast-ing, much as the Season of Lent and so shared the color of Lent. Therefore the 1st, 2nd and 4th candle of the advent wreath is royal purple. In the four weeks of Advent the third Sunday came to be a time of rejoicing that the fasting was almost over (in our tradition it is called Gaudete Sunday, from the Latin word for “rejoice”). The shift from the purple of the Season to pink or rose for the third Sunday Advent candles reflected this lessening emphasis on penitence as attention turned more to joyful anticipation and celebration of the coming Christmas season.

Things to Think About if You Still Have Not Participated in theRenew + Rebuild Campaign

• We are looking for full participation from every family that is part of our parish. No gift is too small.

• At this point in the Campaign, 100% of all Dol-lars stay with Immaculate Conception and As-sumption of Our Lady Parish because we have gone beyond the amount that requires 26% go down to the Archdiocese of New York.

• There are still Naming Opportunities for some of the items that are part of the Campaign. For ex-ample, you can Memorialize or Honor someone by restoring one the of the Stations of the Cross in Assumption Church or a Meeting Room in the new Parish Center or a Pew in the new Chapel of the Divine Mercy.

• We will most certainly complete all of the proj-ects identified in the campaign; but by exceeding our goals, we can tackle some new projects as well as be ready for the inevitable emergencies that arise in a Parish of this age. We already had compromised very old pipes in the Lower Church that connect our heat to radiators – an unexpect-ed cost. Thank God for the Gold Envelopes!

Notes to theSummary ofRevenue and

Expensesfor the now combined Parish of Immaculate

Conception andAssumption of Our

Lady and Holy Mount Cemetery

h Our weekly collections are up slightly, and I ask families to seriously consider a modest in-crease in their regular Sunday offerings.

h The Gold Envelopes continue to help pay the mortgage debt on the Gym and the extraordi-nary maintenance needs of the Parish and Cemetery.

h Fund Raising is up, thanks to the Bonanza Lottery, Parish Raffle, and Rentals. Even our Zeppole sales at our Carnival are in this wonderful amount.

h Donations appear to be down, but in 2015, the sale of a house in Tuckahoe that had been be-queathed to the parish caused a one-time surge in donations.

h Insurance money from the water-damaged convent also is shown in “Other Income” in the 2015-2016 Fiscal Year.

h Expenses are fairly stable, with an increase in employee sala-ries and a decrease in church expenses.

h Holy Mount Cemetery has very little income since there are no sales of graves until we build our Columbarium which could see the sale of our 1,500 double niches for those who choose cremation.

h With the success of the Renew + Rebuild Campaign and all of our Fund Raising efforts, we are positioned for another great year ahead as we strive for fis-cal solvency and strength.

The success of our campaign is measured in two ways:1. Whether we meet or exceed our goal, and2. The participation of all parishioners/parish families.

As of December 5, we have $2,146,952.50in donations and pledges from 285 families!

We thank God and those generous individuals who have already made a pledge or donation to this impor-tant initiative for our parish!

We have exceeded our Archdiocesan goal and now100% of every new donation and pledge will go to our parish.

While we have met the first measure of success, we fall far short of the goal of full parishioner/parish fami-lies’ participation. We ask that every parishioner or family join us in pledging or donating to this campaign. No donation is too small!

If you have not yet made your pledge, cards will continue to be available in the Churches and in the Parish Office. When you are ready, please return your pledge card to the Parish Office or put it in a sealed envelope marked “Renew + Rebuild” and place it in the collections basket at Mass on Sunday!

Opportunities for Memorials will be published next week.

Jesse Tree 2017Gifts Due December 17

Our annual collection of Christmas gifts for children and adults less fortunate than our-selves is now underway. The groups in-clude battered women, unwed mothers, families in transition and need, chil-dren and grandchildren of prisoners, the homeless, as well as children with special needs and life-threatening ill-nesses. Their ages range from the un-born to the elderly.

Please take a gift tag from one of the baskets located at either Church. We would appreciate receiving your new, wrapped gifts with the gift tag attached as soon as pos-sible, but no later than December 17th. The gifts should be placed under the Jesse Tree at either Church. We encourage everyone to take at least one gift tag for this worthwhile outreach project.

Please refer to the Jesse Tree web site announcement for the dates and times that we will be processing the gifts.

A Thank You From The FlockThe Flock - the parish youth group for eighth grade and high school students - would like to extend our sincere gratitude to the Parish: our pastor, priests, deacons, and fellow parishioners - for helping us welcome in the new liturgical year with the making of Advent Wreaths. Through your generosity, we were able to sell every wreath we made while sharing an Advent joy with our parish family. Our teens greatly benefited from seeing the faith in action, and we cannot thank you enough for your role in that.We must also offer a special thanks to Nature’s Cradle Nursery for their continued support of our youth group and for supplying the pine swaths that we used to make the wreaths.God Bless all of you as we eagerly await the coming of Jesus at Christmas,The Flock
