Parish of Immaculate Conception and Assumption of Our Lady 3

Vol. 38, No. 32 August 9, 2020 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time

From the Desk of Fr. Anthony Sorgie

O n Friday evening and Saturday morning, the Church celebrates, with great joy, the Assumption of our Blessed Mother. It is a certitude that, at the end of her earthly life, the Mother of Jesus was taken up into heaven, body and soul. Just as our Lord Jesus rose from the dead, in His own body, and subsequently ascended into heaven, where He, with His glorified Body, is seated at the right hand of the Father, so too, Mary is in Heaven with her glorified body. She is in Heaven, crowned in glory. When we die and are judged to be worthy of Christ -- as those now in heaven or on their way have been – we must wait for the end of time, at the final judgment, to have our souls and bodies reunited. Not so for Our Lady! Her Assumption is a cause for great hope and joy, not only for ourselves, but the saints in Heaven. Ultimately, like Mary, we shall have a glorified body following the pattern of Christ’s own Risen Body. St. John Paul II tells us: “The Solemnity of the Assumption, body and soul of Mary into heaven at the heart of the summer season reminds us of what

our true and ultimate dwelling place is: heaven. In the mystery we contemplate today, we find clearly revealed the destiny of every human creature: the victory over death, to live forever with God. Mary is the perfect woman in whom even now the divine plan is fulfilled, as a pledge of our resurrection. She was the first fruit of Divine Mercy

since she was the first to share in the divine covenant sealed and fully realized in Christ who died and rose for us ... O Mary, Mother of hope, strong with your help, we do not fear obstacles and difficulties;

fatigue and sufferings do not discourage us, because you accompany us on the path of life, and from heaven you watch over all of your children, filling them with grace ... Dear brothers and sisters, however dark the shadows that sometimes gather on the horizon, and however incomprehensible certain events may appear to be in human history, we must never lose trust and peace. Today’s feast invites us to entrust ourselves to Mary, assumed into heaven who, like a shining star from heaven, directs our daily journey on earth.”

Sacraments and Liturgy

Next Weekend’s Readings 20th Sunday of Ordinary Time, Year A

Reading I: Isaiah 56: 1, 6-7 Foreigners, or Gentiles, living within Pales-tine were given limited rights by the Jews. This arose because a certain univer-salist tendency now held sway among the Jews of this prophet’s time. Reading II: Romans 11: 13-15, 29-32 God’s gifts and calling are given both to Jews and Gentiles. Paul definitely believes this. For him, who was always conscious of his Jewish origins, it became a clear belief that Jews and all others will be saved through God’s mercy. The Gospel: Matthew 15: 21-28 The Canaanite woman is doubly marginal: she is a woman in a man’s world and a Gentile. She uses Our Lord’s “dog” imagery to make a frank but humble reply. He admires the woman’s faith and immediately heals her daughter.

241. “Why is St. Rocco the patron Saint of dogs and a powerful patron against plagues?”

St. Rocco is the patron Saint of dogs because a dog would lick his sores and bring him bread when he was suffering from the plague. Dogs have been known as “man’s best friend” for centu-ries, and many saints were aided by dogs when they were in need. For example, there is a popular story from the life of St. Rocco that has added to his title of “Patron Saint of Dogs.” In the 14th century, St. Rocco devoted himself to helping the sick who were suffering from the plague. He visited many Italian towns and eventually contracted the same disease that he was battling. Afraid that he would infect others, St. Rocco isolated himself from others by going into a self-quarantine in the forest. There, he was slowly dying, but God provided for him by sending him a dog. This dog would lick his sores and bring him bread each day that he took from his master’s table. This is why St. Rocco is often depicted in paintings with a dog. After a certain time had passed, St. Rocco was healed of his ailments and continued his ministry of caring for and curing the sick. For dog lovers, St. Rocco is a worthy intercessor, who can watch over and protect your beloved pet.
