Padre’s Corner March 31, 2019 Fourth Sunday of Lent “Isle of Dogs” was a 2018-released cartoon movie, directed by Wes Anderson, set in a futuristic Japan where dogs are abandoned due to a canine illness. A young boy desperately searches for his confiscated pet friend dog. The mayor of the fictional Megasaki City orders the decree, despite the fact of a scientist protesting that he is close to a cure for the dog illness of influenza virus. The mayor then cruelly issues an edict for the extermination of all living dogs, to be replaced by only robotic dogs. Corruptive money influences are also a part of the plot, with a new mayor that reverses the edict. All things end well, as death is not the answer to a social problem. Life becomes a strategy, and the innocents are spared. In the recent Christmas remake of “The Grinch”, based on the original 1966 televised cartoon inspired by Doctor Seuss, the main character is a miserable man much like Ebenezer Scrooge first created by Charles Dickens in 1843 for “A Christmas Carol”. Grinch regains his civility through his dog Max and a kindly girl from Whoville. When I went to Mexico in late November, these cinematic movie treasures came to mind. In a troubled patch of land on the outskirts of Mexico City, I breathed in with difficulty the terrible smells of human and animal suffering. In a modern world that prides itself on civility and education, how can this be? How can governments, churches, and other social structures allow this to continue? On the fourth day of our journey, we went to a homeless shelter for women run by the Mexican government. Physical illness, family abandonment, and mental health issues were the primary culprits in this social setting. These human beings were such an embarrassment to the authorities that no photography or videotaping was permitted, in fear that worldwide attention would gather. Both settings together, undoubtedly found elsewhere in countries, reminded me of the “Island of Misfit Toys” in another Christmas classic from 1964 ”Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer”. Sister Laura Urbano told me: “That reality in Mexico City is the same in the cities and rural areas outside of Bolivia. The chapel of adobe and roof covering with aluminum, exactly alike.” She ministered to the poor people of Bolivia for twenty-five years, and now attempts to do the same in the City of Newburgh. An afternoon dinner at a flashy shopping mall, in Mexico City, could not erase or dim these surreal images. The putrid smells of the dump one day, and in the shelter hospital for dying women the next will never leave my nostrils. The lack of or absence of suitable drinking water was also quite apparent. To respect the privacy of people at both the dump and the shelter, we were discouraged from taking photos of them. Even forbidden from doing so. However like a Walt Disney movie, where the animals take on human emotions and personalities, the sorry moods and stories of the people could be seen and observed in the faces of the dogs. Consider this middle first-century point from Saint Paul to the Corinthian community of early Christians circa 55 AD: “God chose those whom the world considers absurd to shame the wise. He singled out the weak of this world to shame the strong. He chose the world’s low born and despised, those who count for nothing, to reduce to nothing those who were something, so that mankind can do no boasting before God. God it is Who has given you life in Christ Jesus. He has made Him our wisdom and also our justice, our sanctification, and our redemption.” So where do we turn for strength, perspective, and real hope? On the feast day of the apostle Saint Andrew, November 30, the Gospel reading described the first followers of Jesus abandoning their fishing nets and other life paths to follow Him. At the holy hours and Masses of the week, I was reminded of the fact that we are all called by God be it Mexico or America or anywhere else on planet earth. Father Giuseppe, of the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal who ran this trip, blessed me one night with these words: “The power of God wants to do great things through you, with His power not yours.” I extend that message to each of you. I purchased images and a Mass stole of Our Lady of Guadalupe as a reminder of Her graces also. My retired Chargers/Vikings football friend Ed White wrote me: “Father, this looks like some of the off rampways in the Bay Area. It is becoming more a world of have and have nots, and more and more have nots. Good work. Bless you.” We need God and our loved ones. I also need my adopted Moondoggie, Petey and Mimi. Fr.Bill

TODAY FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT
First Reading: Joshua 5:9a, 10-12 Joshua and the Israelites celebrated Passover in Jericho. This was the first time they had eaten the produce of the promised land. After this, there was no more bread sent from heaven because they were able to eat the yield of the land. Second Reading: 2 Corinthians 5:17-21 Paul tells us that anyone living in Jesus is a new creation because God has reconciled with us through Christ. As an ambassador for Jesus, Paul implores that the Corinthians be reconciled to God through Jesus. Gospel: Luke 15:1-3, 11-32 The Pharisees grew disgusted with Jesus because of his compassion toward sinners. So Jesus told them a story of a son who squandered his inheritance. When a famine broke out, he returned home and asked his father to become a hired hand. His father instead welcomed him with a joyful celebration, just as God is overjoyed when a sinner returns to him.
