Padre’s Corner AUGUST 11, 2019 NINETEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME The Path To Heaven – An Editorial taken from the Columbia magazine – Editor Alton J. Pelowski “A CLASSIC EPISODE of the Twilight Zone begins with a jewelry thief fleeing the police and getting shot. He is awakened in the afterlife by a man dressed in white, a “guide” who assures him he has only one concern: “Your comfort. My job is to see to it you get what you want --- whatever it may be.” Incredulous, the shameless crook is soon wallowing in wealth, wine and women. Eventually, however, he becomes bored and argues there must have been some mistake. “Look, I don’t belong in heaven,” he says. “I want to go to the other place.” The guide responds, “Whatever gave you the idea you were in heaven? …. This is the other place.” In the episode’s closing narration, we’re told, “Now he has everything he’s ever wanted ---- and he’s going to have to live with it for eternity.” “Though a work of popular entertainment, this episode of The Twilight Zone provides a practical lesson and invites us to examine our own consciences. As Lent gives way to Holy Week and Easter, we might ask ourselves: How often do we value our immediate desires and contentment over God’s will for our lives? Or, as Pope Francis once said, “Am I a Christian of the culture of comfort, or am I a Christian who accompanies Jesus to the cross?” The Way of the Cross, after all, is the path to heaven. During his agony in the garden, Jesus cried, “Father, if you are willing, take this cup away from me; still, not my will but yours will be done” (Lk 22:42). It was through his perfect obedience and love that the Lord reversed the original sin, and we, baptized into his death, are now invited to share in his abundant life through grace (cf. Rom 5:19, 6:3). This new life is defined not be earthly prosperity and things that will pass away, but by the virtues of faith, hope and charity. Consider the saints and all who witness to God’s grace and mercy by their lives. For example, at age 10, Richard Moore was blinded by a rubber bullet during conflicts in Northern Ireland; rather than responding with anger, he has chosen forgiveness and peace. In the case of many displaced Christians in Iraq, who lost everything fleeting the threat of genocide, they courageously continue to bear witness to their faith with joy and hope. The life of grace is also evident in less dramatic circumstances: It is seen in all those who respond to God’s personal call to the priesthood, religious life or marriage and family, and live their vocations faithfully, as well as in all who follow the commandments to love God and neighbor. Christian witness demonstrates that authentic freedom and lasting joy are found not in getting exactly what we want, when we want it. Rather, they are found in conforming our wills to God. Christ’s victory over sin and death opened the true path to heaven and allows us to respond in faith: “May it be done to me according to your word” (Lk 1:38).” I am often intrigued by silent films going back nearly a century ago. Glamorous and attractive actors plus actresses, once vibrant and young, have left the world stage of importance for an eternal world where such distinctions are of no concern. We all become preoccupied by having nice cars, homes, memorabilia, financial resources for retirement, and other worldly values deemed relevant. The above editorial from the April, 2019 copy of “Columbia“ magazine corrects and promotes rightful instead of stinking thinking. I thank the Knights of Columbus for these insightful ideas. Father Bill

TODAY NINETEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME First Reading: Wisdom 18:6-9 In this excerpt, the Israelites are reminded that they were warned before God sent an angel to slay the first born of the Egyptians. God called on them to have courage, and then rewarded them by punishing their enemies and leading them from captivity. Second Reading: Hebrews 11:1-2, 8-19 Faith is described as true belief even toward things we cannot see. Abram's faith in God was so deep that he wandered through a foreign land, convinced God's promise of a homeland was sincere. God honored his promise to give Abram many descendants, and was proud of the deep faith Abram and his people possessed. Gospel: Luke 12:32-48 Jesus encourages us to be prepared for his return at all times, for he will come when we least expect him. He tells of a master who entrusts his home to his servants, and fully expects them to be awaiting his return. In the same manner, Jesus can arrive at any moment and expects us to be prepared for his return. Monday Dt 10:12-22; Mt 17:22-27 Tuesday Dt 31:1-8; Mt 18:1-5, 10, 12-14 Wednesday Dt 34:1-12; Mt 18:15-20 Thursday Vigil: 1 Chr 15:3-4, 15-16, 16:1-2; 1 Cor 15:54b-57; Lk 11:27-28 Day: Rv 11:19a, 12:1-6a, 10ab; 1 Cor 15:20-27; Lk 1:39-56 Friday Jos 24:1-13; Mt 19:3-12 Saturday Jos 24:14-29; Mt 19:13-15
