The Manse Tweedmount Road August 2018 Dear Friends, We read in the Bible, ‘While Jesus was in Bethany, reclining at the table in the home of Simon the Leper, a woman came with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, made of pure nard. She broke the jar and poured the perfume on his head.’ This is a story that speaks of impulsiveness, of generosity, of gratitude. It tells of one woman’s response to the love and forgiveness of Jesus. How do we respond to the loving generosity God shows to each of us? Is it with a generous sharing of our time, talents, money and possessions? Or do we keep them all to ourselves? We readily take but we don’t give. Christian Stewardship is a fundamental part of Christian Discipleship. It is concerned with the

gifts of God and the way we use these gifts. It is concerned with the love and commitment of

God to his world and its people, and with our response to that love.

As Christians we have a responsibility to care for God’s creation. We have a responsibility to use time in a balanced way that enables us to enjoy life as God intended it to be. We have a responsibility to make full use of our particular talents if our lives are to be all that God has intended for us. We have a responsibility to love and care: the measure of our love for God is the extent to which we care for his people throughout his world. The way we use our money and other possessions is another indication of our willingness to praise God in every aspect of our lives. We are expected to display a sharing, unselfish attitude in the way we use these resources at our disposal. In our worship during September we will be focusing on God’s gifts to us and our Stewardship of these gifts. In the words of our harvest hymn,

All good gifts around us are sent from heaven above; then thank the Lord, O thank the Lord, for all his love.

Yours in Christ Rosie

CHRISTIAN AID WEEK 2018

Christian Aid Week in May seems so far away now but it is important to share with you the

results of that week and to thank all those who participated in any way. The Coffee Morning

raised £524.44 and the above photo shows Thea Foulkes with some of the goodies which

were available at that event. The final amount sent to Christian Aid was almost £4000. This

contributed to the total of £1.5 million raised across Scotland.

££ How is this money spent? ££

Christian Aid has programmes in 37 countries, working with 475 local, national and

international partners. Topics covered are as diverse as emergency response, accountability,

peace-building, health, land rights, tax justice and helping communities adapt to climate

change. One example of Christian Aid work is:-

Breaking the Barriers www.christianaid.org.ukabout-us/programmes

The Breaking the Barriers programme aims to increase rural women’s jobs and income in the

sustainable energy sector, improve working and living conditions, promote gender equality,

and strengthen women’s social status. This 42-month project, which was launched on March

8th 2018 to celebrate International Women’s Day, is implemented in Burkina Faso, Malawi,

Ethiopia, and Honduras.

Women will be able to access finance through savings and loans groups and receive training

in business management and sustainable energy enterprises, including solar lamps, solar

shops, cook stoves, and bio digesters. The total project budget is €6,173,615.03, 80% of

which is funded by the European Union (EU), the remaining is funded by Christian Aid

MESSY CHURCH Our next Melrose Churches Messy Church will be on Sunday 9th September from 3.00-5.00pm in the Church Hall. The theme will be Creation Time and a warm welcome is extended to all to come along and join in the fun. There will be stories, crafts, games, worship, food, fun and friendship. Children must be accompanied by an adult. If you are interested in helping with Messy Church we have a planning meeting on Friday 24 August at 4.00pm in the Church Hall.

THANKYOU for your continued support

It is estimated that upwards of 3 million people will benefit from this project

KIRK SESSION MEETINGS The Kirk Session will meet at 7.00pm on Thursdays 27th September in the Hall and 29th November in the Chapel. BOWDEN AND MELROSE CHURCH FETE The annual Fete was held in Bowden Village Hall on 28th July and was opened by the Very Rev. David Arnott. Once again, this event was well supported by members of the congregation and villagers alike. The long spell of lovely weather had broken but it did not deter people from heading to the village hall. A grand total of £1,159.70 was raised for Church funds. The organisation of these events takes a great deal of time and effort so thanks go to those who took on that role, all who donated and those who attended. MID-WEEK COMMUNITY LUNCH A regular number of people continue to enjoy the monthly mid-week lunches but new faces are always welcome. There is a short service in the Chapel, starting at 11.45a.m. for those who wish to attend and the lunch follows that. They are very sociable occasions where people enjoy meeting up with others and sharing a chat. There is always a choice of soups, filled rolls and delicious home baking, plus teas and coffees, all for the price of £3.50. Lunches are served from 12.15 – 1.30 p.m. Please come along and join us if you are free on any (or indeed all) of the undernoted dates:

Wednesday 26th September - Margaret's team Wednesday 24th October - Ruth’s & Barbara’s team

Wednesday 28th November - Margaret's team There is a short Ecumenical Service at 11.45a.m. in the Chapel

prior to the lunch for any who would like to attend.

Although it seems far too early to think about Christmas now, it will be here before we know it. Why not put the date of the Christmas Lunch as Wednesday 19th December into your diary? The usual fare takes on a Christmas theme with a choice of cock-a-leekie or “red” soup, turkey rolls with cranberry sauce, Christmas Cake and shortbread plus entertainment. Tickets will be available from 28th November but the payment of £5 only falls due on the day of the lunch.

THE GUILD A warm welcome to all, ladies and gentlemen, to the new season for Bowden and Melrose Guild, starting on 4th October with our Dedication Service led by Rev. Rosemary Frew at 2.30 p.m. in the Chapel, followed by fellowship over tea and scones in Melrose Parish Church Hall. We hope to welcome back all our stalwarts, but in addition anyone seeking a number of very interesting and varied talks over the coming season and enjoying the social aspect. Prior to our Dedication Service, the Presbyterial Guild Council has their meeting on Wednesday 12th September at 2.30pm at Old and St. Paul’s Church, Galashiels. The Speaker is Dr. Pam Cairns “A Gathering of the Guilds.” Do keep the date clear as a good representation of our own Guild at this meeting would be very desirable. Our Fundraising Project for last season was providing funds for Solar Ovens to be distributed and used in Bolivia. A very cheap system of cooking when blessed with sunshine much of the time. The solar ovens are proving so successful that other countries are now seeking them. In all, our Guild raised £534 towards this, and joining with many other Guilds the funds have paid for 260 ovens to 20 communities. Our project for this coming year is “Join the Dots”. On 18th October we have a speaker coming from Crossreach to explain the aim of this fundraiser. It is hoped to include in its remit, assisting with loneliness, isolation, and providing support at home, in care homes, with

Page 9: THE PARISH OF BOWDEN & MELROSE Sundays Dates for your diary! We will be Celebrating the Lord’s Supper on 30th September, 28th October and 25th November at 9.30a.m. in Bowden Kirk

youth projects and mental wellbeing. Over the year we have allocated two meetings to encourage fundraising for this much needed project. 1st November, we welcome Rachel Hammerton, explaining the intricacies of kilt making, and working with tartan fabrics. Our Autumn fundraiser on 15th November is welcoming Rev. Marion Dodd to talk about music. Marion always has a lively presentation to her talks, and we hope friends will lend their support to this afternoon. 29th November we welcome Arabella Lewis to talk about the work of the Samaritans. Arabella was due to speak to us on 18th January, when unfortunately the meeting was cancelled due to heavy snow! Hard to believe after all this sunny weather recently. Christmas lunch will be enjoyed by all on 6th December at a venue still to be fixed. (Keep the date free!) Do come along and try the Guild – come as often as you can, and perhaps join with us in membership – you will be made very welcome.

Elizabeth Fraser, President.

Traidcraft plc is a trading company which sources products from farmers, growers and artisans across the world, helping them to develop skills and build sustainable livelihoods through trade. Every purchase you make through Traidcraft contributes to this, as the logo states “fighting poverty through trade”. However, Traidcraft Exchange, the charity sector of Traidcraft plc has a Policy Campaigns Department which works to change unfair rules and company practices that affect people in developing countries, as well as raise awareness of injustices and build public support. “Who picked my tea?” is a Traidcraft Exchange campaign.

In the UK, we drink 165 million cups of tea per day but few of us know about the people behind our tea. Unsafe work conditions, poverty wages and appalling living conditions; that’s the reality for tea workers in Assam, India who pick the tea that goes into some of the most popular British blends. The big tea brands know about his but aren’t doing enough about it. It’s time for a change and it starts with a simple question: Who picked my tea?

Pick up a leaflet from the Traidcraft stall and read about it, find out what you can do and ……..take home some tea as well!

Many thanks for your support of the Traidcraft Stall after the service in Melrose Parish Church on the first Sunday of every month. Here is a date for your diary…… 9th and 10th November Annual Christmas Sale in Melrose Parish Church hall.

Borders Street Pastors

Listening Caring Helping Registered Scottish Charity No: SCO46473

[email protected]

The summer has proved to be a very busy time for Borders Street Pastors. Extra patrols have been deployed for a number of Rugby 7s, the Common Riding in Hawick and also the Braw Lads Gathering in Galashiels. Early September will see our 150th Patrol in the Borders! A common theme from all these patrols, and also from our normal patrols is that although the streets have been busy, the atmosphere has been good natured and there are fewer issues to deal with than a year ago. In addition, although we do not raise the subject of faith on the streets, faith conversations from folk out in the night time economy are increasing to the stage where they are now a regular feature of our patrols. Indeed, from team leaders’ weekly reports, details of faith conversations often take up the bulk of what is written! We are of the firm belief that this is no mere coincidence. Prayer before the patrol and from others who support us through prayer, in addition to prayer on the streets is having a major impact. We serve a great God and He is blessing our communities! However, we cannot be complacent. At a recent meeting, we were told of an area (not named), where Street Pastors had stopped patrolling because things had become so quiet. The result…? Street crime started increasing! When Christ’s presence is removed, other (darker) forces move in. Teams were in attendance at both the Melrose and Earlston 7s, although not at the 7s themselves, but in the towns where there have been issues in the past. Both events were busy, but as mentioned earlier, good natured and with fewer issues to deal with than previously. In early June, Earlston Parish Church hosted a Commissioning Service for a number of Street Pastors who have joined us over the past year. This was a great time for the team to come together to celebrate this event. Sandy Gunn from Ascension Trust (Scotland) joined us to commission the Pastors. June saw several extra patrols in Hawick during the Common Riding and also an extra patrol in Galashiels in the early evening on Braw Lads Day. These events were an excellent opportunity to use Liz, who is a ‘Day Pastor’. Day Pastors aren’t available at night but come out with us during the day and early evening. Is this something that might interest you?? In June we also welcomed back Fan Heafield as Prayer Pastor. Prayer Pastors come to Trinity in Galashiels and ‘The Well’ in Hawick to pray with the team prior to going out and are on call at home afterwards to pray into situations as they occur. Along with Maria Sprott in Hawick, Prayer Pastors are a vital part of our team; could this be something that you could help with once a month? A number of our team recently underwent training as Rail Pastors. This is an opportunity to take the work of Street Pastors onto the Borders Railway at busy times, like during the Melrose 7s and the Edinburgh Festival. This is a work in progress and is in no way detracting from our core work in Hawick and Galashiels.

Page 11: THE PARISH OF BOWDEN & MELROSE Sundays Dates for your diary! We will be Celebrating the Lord’s Supper on 30th September, 28th October and 25th November at 9.30a.m. in Bowden Kirk

We are sorry to be losing Esther Bailey as team leader in Hawick. Esther has been involved with Borders Street Pastors from the start but is moving away. Esther was presented with a small gift from the team at our AGM in July at Selkirk Parish Church. Michael Scoular replaces Esther as team leader in Hawick. Graeme Cowe has kindly agreed to accept the position of team leader and has now led a number of patrols in Galashiels and also at the Earlston 7s. None of our work could happen without the many Churches and people who support us in so many different ways and we thank you all for this. When there is talk of decline of Churches, Street Pastors proves that Christ is as relevant now as He was in the past, more so in fact. Many folk on the streets are hungry for spiritual nourishment and we provide not only the practical help, but, where requested, that spiritual nourishment as well. Finally, I would ask you to remember Sandy Scrimgiour, the CEO of Ascension Trust (Scotland) in your prayers. Sandy recently underwent a triple heart bypass and is now making good progress. Borders Street Pastors can be contact on 01896 758248 or at [email protected].

PASTORAL CARE GROUP Members of the group are involved in visiting members of the congregation and parish in their homes and in several care and nursing homes. In addition they hold monthly “get togethers” in the lounge of Priorwood Court for residents and any others who would like to come along for tea or coffee, home baking and a chat. The dates are 11th September, 9th October and 13th November at 10.30a.m. BOWDEN COMMUNITY CAFÉ This continues to meet on the third Wednesday of each month at 11am in Bowden Village Hall (forthcoming dates are Sep 19th; October 17th and November 21st). The Border Weaver bus (964) provides access from Melrose leaving Melrose at 11.02 and leaving Bowden at 12.05.

BLYTHSWOOD CARE SHOEBOX APPEAL

Photos courtesy of Blythswood Care

At our Harvest Thanksgiving services, leaflets containing information about the Blythswood Care Shoebox Appeal will be available. Last year, Blythswood Care distributed a total of 115,932 shoeboxes to Albania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Kosovo, Moldova, Pakistan, Romania, Serbia and Ukraine. We would ask that you consider filling a shoebox (or more than one!) as an acknowledgement of harvest. Collection for these boxes will be Monday 29th October, 2.20- 2.50p.m. at Melrose Rugby Club. Filled boxes may be handed into the churches prior to that date but by Sunday 28th October at the latest.

BOWDEN AND MELROSE HARVEST THANKSGIVINGS AND LUNCH

Harvest Thanksgiving will be celebrated at both services on Sunday 30th September – at the close of both, there will be a retiring offering for Christian Aid. The services will be suitable for all ages and will be followed by a Harvest Lunch in Melrose Parish Church Hall, to which all are invited.

If you are interested and can spare the time, please come along on Saturday 29th September at 10.00am to help to decorate Bowden Kirk. Donations of flowers, greenery, fruit, vegetables and perserves would be useful to help with this. Please contact Mrs Elsa

Barker (01896 822063) or the church office if you would like to make a contribution of food for the buffet lunch. Retiring offerings will be taken at the close of the services on 16th and 23rd September to offset the cost of the Harvest Lunch. Any surplus of donations will be added to the total of the retiring offerings for Christian Aid’s Harvest Appeal.

FOOD BANK Your contributions to the local Food Bank (one collection box can be found in the Gattonside porch of Melrose Parish Church) are enormously appreciated by the recipients. The Food parcels are distributed via referrals from Social Workers, Health Centres or the local Citizens Advice Bureau. Stocks of certain items have built up but the current request is for: small jars of pasta sauce; tins of fruit; tins of custard; tins of rice; tins of ham; tins of corn beef; tins of vegetables; packets of needles; jam. Your on-going support is greatly appreciated. ST JOHN’S HOME SONGS OF PRAISE On the third Tuesday of each month, the residents of St John’s Home gather in their sitting-room, when they enjoy sharing in singing for half an hour of Songs of Praise led by members of Melrose Church choir and others. We sing from 2pm to 2.30 (sometimes 2.45), participating in singing well known hymns. At times this stimulates stories from the residents, some of whom join in the singing, while others listen. As we sing in unison, we would very much welcome anyone else who would like to swell our numbers. Do come and find out how it works or chat to choir members to find out more.

Elizabeth Fraser.

STOP PRESS!

Six young people from churches in Zomba Presbytery, Malawi have been the guests of Melrose and Peebles Presbytery from 10th-27th August. Four of them were hosted by members of Bowden and Melrose Church for their first week in Scotland. Geoffrey stayed in the Manse with Rosie and Dave, Phalyce and Chipiriro stayed with David and Tricia Hunter in Midlem, while Tadala was with Eelin McIvor in Gattonside.

Geoffrey has just completed his midwifery studies, sponsored by the Presbytery of Melrose and Peebles. He had to graduate in absentia because he was in Scotland. To mark the special occasion he was presented with the internationally recognised Textbook for Midwives. He spent a day with the staff on the maternity unit at BGH. Chipi, who is studying accountancy, took part in our services of worship on Sunday 12th August.

On Tuesday 14th the group visited Melrose Abbey and then came to Melrose Parish Church for lunch before heading off to Lindisfarne. Many thanks to the team of ladies who catered for our visitors and friends. It was a wonderful spread and much appreciated.

The group had a busy time in Scotland – as well as visiting all the churches in the Presbytery they attended the National Youth Assembly, visited the Scottish Parliament and Church of Scotland headquarters in Edinburgh, they helped at a holiday club and visited local schools, they attended a civic reception at Scottish Borders Council, took part in a workshop at Smail’s Printing Works and spent a day on a farm.

A video of the visit was made and it will be shown to all congregations later in the year.
