“Catholic Singer Engelbert Humperdinck Gives Touching Tribute To Late Wife Aleteia / J P Mauro / 2-12-21

The English crooner said his wife was anointed with water from Lourdes before she died.

Famed English singer Engelbert Humperdinck has reportedly lost his wife to a battle with COVID-19. The 84-year old Catholic crooner thanked his fans for their prayers before giving a touching tribute to his wife, Patricia. Humperdinck announced on social media that he and his wife had become infected with COVID-19 earlier this year. Crux reported February 5 that Patricia had been “hit pretty hard” by the illness. Patricia, who had been suffering from Alzheimer’s disease for almost a decade, reportedly stopped eating and drinking after contracting coronavirus. In a bid for spiritual support, Engelbert asked for prayers: “I’m sure God will send the right message and the right angels and the right people over to put their hands on her. Please help with prayer. That’s the most important thing,” Humperdinck wrote. Two days later, Crux reported Patricia’s passing. Through the pain of loss, Humperdinck’s words reflected the singer’s Catholic faith. He expressed his heartfelt gratitude to well-wishers who supported Patricia with prayers in her final hours. Englebert went on to write a touching tribute to his wife, who he said received last rites from their nephew, Fr. Paul. A beautiful reflection The full text was posted to Instagram, with a picture of the couple. In his tribute, he noted that Patricia was anointed with water from the fountains at Lourdes before she died: “Our family is heartbroken over the loss of my darling wife. Last night she slipped away softly, as if by God’s clockwork…” He continued, “She was surrounded by our children, Louise, Jason, Brad, with Scott on FaceTime…Her earthly limitations no longer hold her down as she is freely running the glorious gardens of Heaven, reunited with so many loved ones. We prayed as a family, blessed her with the water from Lourdes and off she went…ushered into the arms of Jesus with help from the generous heart filled prayers from all around the world.” Independent Catholic News reports that Humperdinck’s family has long held a strong connection to Lourdes. In the 1980s his daughter, Louise Dorsey, took part in the Hosanna House and Children’s Pilgrimage Trust’s (HCPT) Easter pilgrimage to Lourdes. The following year his son Scott went as well. The family have been regular attendees and contributors ever since. Phil Sparke, Chief Executive of HCPT, was quick to offer condolences from the Lourdes shrine. He wrote: “We were very sad to learn of the death of Patricia last Friday.” He added: “I have written to the family to express the condolences of the HCPT family, and Patricia and the family will be included with all our prayer intentions at Mass this Sunday by HCPT’s Trust Chaplain.”” PONDERINGS FROM FATHER BILL Father Paul John recently died at the age of seventy. He was a parochial vicar at a parish in Bronxville, at Saint Joseph’s in Westchester County. He joins in eternity a number of other priests in the Archdiocese of New York who have perished of this dreaded disease over the past year, spread throughout the world by a humanity in turmoil. Those of no hope would cast off this human problem as an end in itself. Bury the body and throw some dirt on the casket as it is lowered into the ground. The Christian perceives life and death, however, through a different lens. Death is not an ending, but a beginning to everlasting life. The worldwide culture in these modern times is increasingly secular, in deep contrast from even a few decades ago. I have seen dramatic changes since my first foray into Newburgh 1996-1998 at Sacred Heart. To see athletes and singers of the past bring their Catholic faith into the present is quite refreshing for all to see, as these entertainers as an example remind us that the stark realities of existence end in true hope not emptiness. Heaven opens up the doors to see not just God, but all of our loved ones and spouses once again. A comforting thought to embrace. Father Bill

TODAY THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT

First Reading: Exodus 20:1-17 Through Moses, God passed on the commandments he wished all people to follow. He tells us not to worship idols or take the name of the Lord in vain. All the laws God gave to us, if followed, would ensure that we could live in peace and harmony with one another as he had planned. Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 1:22-25 Paul tells the Corinthians that Christ is the power and the wisdom of God. Although they claimed to possess wisdom, “God’s folly is wiser than men, and his weakness is more powerful than men.” Gospel: John 2:13-25 Jesus went to the temple of Jerusalem to find merchants there selling sheep and doves. He knocked over their tables and drove the animals away. The merchants asked him for a sign that he was authorized to do this. He told them to “destroy this temple (referring to his body) and in three days I will raise it up.” The merchants misunderstood, and did not believe he could rebuild in three days what had taken nearly 50 years to build. Still many believed in him, after seeing the miracles he had performed. Monday 2 Kgs 5:1-15ab; Lk 4:24-30 Tuesday Dn 3:25, 34-43; Mt 18:21-35 Wednesday Dt 4:1, 5-9; Mt 5:17-19 Thursday Jer 7:23-28; Lk 11:14-23 Friday Hos 14:2-10; Mk 12:28-34 Saturday Hos 6:1-6; Lk 18:9-14

Fellow Parishioners – with the cold and flu season, as well as coronavirus hitting all at the same time, it is imperative that we wear a facial mask while attending both daily mass and the Sunday Liturgy. The CDC has stressed the importance of wearing masks to curb the spread of the virus. Remember the mask is to cover your face and not be pulled down on your chin and bring hand sanitizer for your own personal use. Please let’s work together to keep one another safe during these uncertain times. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter and God Bless us all. Pope Francis’s Prayer to Mary During Coronavirus Pandemic O Mary, you always shine on our path as a sign of salvation and of hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick, who at the cross took part in Jesus’ pain, keeping your faith firm. You, Salvation of Your People, know what we need, and we are sure you will provide so that, as in Cana of Galilee, we may return to you and to feasting after this time of trial. Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform to the will of the Father and to do as we are told by Jesus, who has taken upon himself our sufferings and carried our sorrows to lead us, through the cross, to the joy of the resurrection. Amen. Under your protection, we seek refuge, Holy Mother of God. Do not disdain the entreaties of we who are in trial, but deliver us from every danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin. Amen.
