THE PARISH NEWS December, 2016
As you read this the Advent Season has be-gun and Christmas is not so far away. It is a busy time of year in every aspect of our lives – home, school, community, church. It seems the closer that we get to Christmas Day the more full our days become. We fill our lives with presents that we give and re-ceive. We fill our lives with shopping and other activities. When we get down to cele-brating what Christmas is all about it is easy to forget about Jesus.
I have heard about a congregation who when they decorate their build-ing at the beginning of Advent everything gets put out – the trees, the wall hangings, the manger scene – everything. Then as the weeks of Advent go by, they take things down so that by Christmas Eve all that is left is the manger scene. Is there a way that we can do that in our lives? Is there a way so that at Christmas we can focus on Jesus. Remembering some of the passages from God’s word would certainly help. Luke 2:7 – “And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.” Titus 2:11 & 14 – “For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salva-tion for all people….” “[Jesus] gave himself for us to redeem….” Christmas comes down to this: that Jesus gave himself to us to redeem us from sin, death and the power of the devil. It is the gift of Jesus we celebrate at Christmas. Everything else that we do should point to that. Our prayer at Christmas can be summarized in this Christmas hymn verse: (LBW #52) Oh, draw us wholly to you, Lord, And to us all your grace accord; True faith and love to us impart, That we may hold you in our heart. “Thanks be to God for his inexpressible gift!” (2 Corinthians 9:15) See you at worship!

PLEASE HELP FIRST LUTHERAN DECORATE OUR SANCTUARY!
This year First Lutheran is filling the Poinsettia Tree with Poinsettias purchased from Java Rose. We are asking that you fill out this form, bring it to the church office and pay $15.00 each to purchase a Poinsettia on the tree. There are a total of 30 Poin-
settias to purchase. We can get 40 on the tree. This way we will have enough of the correct size to fill the tree and will save you a trip to the store to buy one. After Christ-mas, if you purchased a Poinsettia, you are welcome to take one off the tree to take
home with you. You are welcome to purchase one from some other place and fill out this form. That Poinsettia will then be setting someplace else throughout the church.

REVERSE ADVENT
CALENDAR Each day beginning November 27 add an item
to the box or basket and bring to
First Lutheran Church by
January 6 (12th day of Christmas)
to be delivered to
McLean Family Resource Center
What is a Reverse Advent Calendar?
First you need to grab a basket or box and add something useful to the box.
The idea is that you add 24 items just like an
advent calendar.
Following are items needed at the Resource Center.
Oatmeal and Cereal Pancake Mix and Syrup Peanut Butter and Jelly Soup and Snack Crackers Instant Potatoes and rice Chili Beans and Kidney Beans Tomato, Chicken Noodle,
Cream of Mushroom and Cream of Chicken Soups
Canned Green Beans and Corn Canned Fruit Canned Pie Filling Granola Bars
Powdered Milk Cake, Muffin, Cookies Mixes Dish and Hand Soap Men’s and Women’s Deodorant Bars of Soap Toothpaste and Toothbrushes Shampoo and Conditioner All Purpose Cleaner for Bathroom and
Kitchen Laundry Soap Toilet Paper Paper Towels
I hope this finds you in great spirits and full of Christmas Joy! We are very excited to be hosting brunch again this year following the Sunday School Christmas Program. In addition to brunch we will also be having a small craft show with a few Youth Group made items as well as Threads of Hope Bracelets. Our 2017 Calen-dars have just come in and will also be available for purchase too! Calendars are $15 and will be sold the fol-lowing Sunday after service too. Pizza Day has again been a big success. This year we have broken our record a few times already. The smallest group we have served has been 34 and the largest is 45! It costs roughly $140 a month to host this event and I do feel it’s become a very important tool. We have had multiple youth who come from atheist homes or either never been or haven’t darkened the doorway of church since they were little, coming faithfully the 1st Wednesday of every month. It is truly my favorite day of the month! We have also given a standing invitation to the Sheriff’s office to come and join us for this pizza feast as well and they have been well re-ceived. If you are interested in donating or helping serve please contact Laura at 315-0212. Here’s a few dates to jot down: December 6th The Reason (Concert w/ Switchfoot and Tenth Avenue North) TBA December 7th Pizza Day December 11th Christmas Brunch & Craft Show
Here’s a little sneak peak of two of the images in FLY’s 2017 Calendar.

Are you blessed with a roof over your head and food on the table? If you answered yes, would you be willing to help out to reach some of those in need? If so, here are a couple suggestions you could do. As you know, there are many, many more ways
to make someone happy during the holidays and all through the year!
The Salvation Army could use volunteers to ring bells at their “Red Kettles”. All you need to do is put on a happy face, red apron, hand out treats and give a warm thank you to those who give. Last year they ran 40% short of the goal due to the lack of volunteers. Those in need receive assistance only as funds are available. Call Anna, volunteer coordinator at 701-223-1889 to sign up for a shift.
Ruth Meiers is more than a homeless shelter. Their programs and services create a transitional pathway from homelessness to community reintegration, providing services across the continuum to help their clients overcome barriers and access the resources available to them. They provide: nights of shelter, meals, food, community food baskets, free health care appointments and thousands of free clothing, hygiene and baby items. The cost for a night of shelter is only $25. Your donation opens the door for a homeless man, woman or child to receive a warm bed, shower and three meals, as well as access to critical essential services to help the homeless get back on their feet and find hope for a better tomorrow!

One more big thank you for all who came and helped make lefse and kuchen -- and thank you to those of you who were so generous with your monetary dona-tions toward the making of these two items. Thank you to Sylvia Thompson and Donna Kroll for chairing these events. It was a successful sale on Sunday, November 20th, following the Fall Festival. The Fall Festival service was a special service and made us realize how truly blessed we are, to live in this country, in Washburn, and be members of First Lutheran Church. Thank you to all who participated in any way in this service. A generous supply of towels were donated to the Ruth Meiers Hospitality House last month. They were so appreciative when they were delivered. Thank you to all who donated for this project. Upcoming Events Saturday, December 3rd, 9:30 a.m. -- the annual Advent Breakfast will be held. The theme is "The Call of Christmas". Please try to attend and bring a guest, someone from our congregation or a friend you want to share the time with. Please consider purchasing a poinsettia plant for our poinsettia tree. Read the article in this month's newsletter about the Reverse Advent Box project -- this would be another meaningful project for the Christmas Season. Thank you in advance for helping with this project. We are in charge of Meals on Wheels for January. Please call Kathy Keller if you are able to help, or be willing if she calls you! We are planning the 2017 women's schedule of events. Your booklet will be placed in your mailbox in the near future.
May the miracle of that holy night so long ago Be born anew in our hearts today.
Wishing you all the wonders of Christmas! Sande Wagner and Sonja Bergstedt, Co-Chairs

STEWARDSHIP ENSE
Life’s Most Persistent and Urgent question is, “What are you doing for others?”
I thought the above quote to be appropriate for a couple of reasons. One being that we have just come through Reformation Sunday and All Saint’s day and remember Martin Luther as one who worked tirelessly on behalf of all church members, not just the electorate in the church. The other reason being that we are coming into the Christ-mas season and the time for thinking of others should be foremost in our minds. Let me mention a couple of things that First Luther-an church is doing and has been doing for our members as well as many others in our communi-ty. This year the “Labor of Love” group served it’s First Annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner at First Lutheran Church. Everyone was invited. We ob-tained a grant from Thrivent for Lutherans in the amount of $250 to help us with this project. We pray that it will be the start of many such dinners in the future. The other community project that First Lutheran is always a part of is one that is dear to my heart. That project is Meals on Wheels. My father had meals come to his home in Fargo during the last years of his life and he was always so thankful to have them. He made many new friends and was never regretful about paying them what he felt he could afford. I want to take this opportunity to
thank all my faithful workers and especially those who have delivered for years. You may rest as-sured that all of our people we serve are extremely thankful for stopping at their homes each month. By the time you read this, another Thanksgiving will have come and gone. I hope all of you will have had a peaceful and fulfilling day filled with love, laughter and of course good food! Since I won’t have another opportunity before Christmas, I will make this my Christmas thank you also. I pray that you will each have a Merry and Glorious Christmas holiday no matter where you are or who you are with. I cannot end my newsletter article without telling you about our Raise the Roof campaign. As I write this we have crossed the $30,000 mark! Hooray! Once again, thank you for your giving and Merry Christmas! Always remember that Jesus is the Reason for the Season. Keep in mind to use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in whatever form you chose.” Yours in good stewardship Kathy Keller Stewardship Trustee

Membership of First Lutheran was divided into 12 groups that each took a month to be responsible for ushering and coffee serving. The idea was that we could encourage more fellowship and participation. That would mean that each of us only had to volunteer for one month a year. Please step up and take your turn in service for your First Luther-an community. The list below is the service group scheduled for January. The service coordinators are Mac & Judy Beaudry. If your name is on this list, please check the calendar and see what Sunday(s) in January works best for you and give Mac or Judy a call at 462-3433. If
Mac or Judy calls you, please prayerfully consider how you can help. If you don’t see your name on this list, your month is coming. Please say yes, when called. Thank you for doing your part and participating in our worship service.

(Continued from previous page) How many wise men followed a star to Bethlehem to worship Jesus? A. two B. three C. four D. We don’t know because the Bible doesn’t say.
Answer: D (See Matthew 2:1-12)
Advent Traditions “The way you celebrate Christmas can be a gift in itself,” said Fred Rogers, “handing on traditions that will give your child a feeling of continuity, comfort and joy in all the Christmases to come.” In American homes, common Advent traditions include wreaths, calendars and logs. Did you know about these Euro-pean traditions? In Normandy, children used to set fires in fields
during Advent. The flames killed caterpillar eggs and drove away rodents. The tradition reflected good conquering evil, just as God’s perfect Son rescues us from sin.
On December 13, Scandinavian countries honor
Saint Lucy (or Lucia), a third-century martyr who, according to legend, brought food to people in the catacombs during winter. For light — and to be able to carry as much food as possible — she wore a wreath of candles on her head. On St. Lucy’s Day, the oldest daughter gets up early and brings sweet rolls to family members. The tradition reminds Christians that Jesus is a gift of light and love for our dark world.
