Whatever became of the massive Federal Deficit? It seems like such a short time ago, that we as a country were convulsed by the overwhelming enormity of the Federal debt. One estimate placed the national debt at approximately $90,000 per household. I am sure that this topic will hit the headlines again in the not too distant future, but for now, it seems we are all happy to just forget about it and preoccupy ourselves with less onerous issues like the size of candidates body parts or the physical attributes of their wives. .
While the passions surrounding the issue have tamped down temporarily, it is a good time to reflect on where we stand as Catholics on issues related to this. I have noticed amongst some Catholic what might be described as a coarsening of attitudes towards people who have come to rely on the government to sustain themselves in these difficult times. We are all too familiar with the unscrupulous amongst us who abuse and gouge various programs designed to help those in need. But sometimes I sense a growing resentment towards most social services, even those directed primarily at supporting children, the elderly and the disabled.
In 1997, then Archbishop (now Cardinal) Francis George remarked that U.S. citizens “are culturally Calvinist, even those who profess the Catholic faith.” Many Catholics have bought into some common assumptions, like the primacy of the individual and the free market and the inherent inefficiency of government. Many tend to view with suspicion and sometimes resentment, organizations like unions and advocacy groups that take it upon themselves to mediate between individuals and employers or organizations. With this comes an elevation of personal responsibility and a diminution of communal obligations.
It has become almost like a refrain, especially amongst many older parishioners, that it is well nigh impossible nowadays to get people to volunteer and commit themselves to ministries or organizations dedicated to helping other people or the community. The usual excuses are over- extension, too many commitments etc, but I wonder if there is not also an underlying erosion of that sense of communal responsibility.
Pope Francis has addressed this issue directly on numerous occasions as Pope John Paul did, and he has challenged priests to better educate people about Catholic social teachings, and to ensure that the values contained in these teachings are brought into the public arena.
The Church has always insisted, and always will insist, that a society should be judged by how well it addresses the needs of its poor and vulnerable members.
With the ever growing segment of the population subsisting below the poverty line, we as a society are not measuring very well to this standard. Church teaching has repeatedly called for, as an expression of Gospel values, a preferential option, not for the Pentagon, but for the Poor. The Church does not subscribe to the peculiar current American premise held by some people, that the poor are best left to their own devices, lest they be degraded by paternalism – a high sounding slogan that gives an easy out from a sense of collective responsibility.
The overwhelming and smothering national debt and intrusive government are powerful and legitimate issues, but we have to be on guard that they do not lead to outcomes that mean the abandonment of the vulnerable and the poor through deep cuts in food aid, health care and support for the unemployed.
The concept of the “common good” is a distinctively Catholic value and tradition, that has motivated the establishment of hospitals, schools and Catholic social services down through the centuries. We are called to be proud of this tradition and this value, and rather than changing to fit in with current prevailing ideologies, be proud to assert our distinctively unique and Catholic perspective.

Doors of Mercy swing open!
Congratulations to Jack and Peggy Devine and to
their top-notch committee on launching the exciting 8
week program “Doors of Mercy”. More than 90
parishioners signed on to the course, resulting in two
Tuesday sessions, in the afternoon and evening to
accommodate the overflow crowds at Duggan Hall in
Spring Lake. Doors of Mercy is a new program,
particularly suited to the celebration of the Holy Year
of Mercy promulgated by Pope Francis earlier this
year. Although the program has been launched in
many parishes across the country, I believe that we
are the first in the Diocese of Trenton.
The program evolved from discussions at the
Spirituality Committee here in the parish, and could
well be a template for other initiatives and programs
that the very alive members of the committee are
planning.
The next meeting of the Spirituality Committee will
be on Wednesday, April 13 in the convent Meeting
Room. All are welcome!
Spirituality and Health The first in the series of Spirituality and Health was
held in St. Margaret Hall on Thursday, April 7. Dr
Harrigan presented his research findings on the role of
―Spirituality and Positive Health Behaviors”, and Fr.
Cullen presented on ―Spirituality and Mental Health and
Resilience across the ages of life.” Next week,
Thursday, April 14, Fr. Dowd will present on the
Spirituality of the Our Father. The following week,
Thursday, April 21, Dr. Ramon Cuasay will present on
“Spirituality in Medicine—A Surgeon’s Perspective”.
The presentation will be held in St. Margaret Hall at
7.00PM.

ST. CATHARINES CLASSICS
St. Catharine-St. Margaret Parish
FIFTH ANNUAL RETREAT
Two difficulties faced, at various times, by those vigilant
in prayer, are DISTRACTION and DRYNESS. We all hit
these points many times in our lives and need to
overcome them. We see in Jesus a man who always
withdrew from the crowd to a peaceful place in profound
prayer after a hard day’s work. St. Catharine’s Classics
offers just that, to our parishioners and all others who
wish to come. Please join us in the quiet surroundings of
San Alfonso Retreat House and take the opportunity to re-
examine ourselves to find that extra food for the journey
and so deepen our relationship with God.

God” (ps46:10)

The Center in Asbury Park
Please, if you don’t want to contribute frozen meals to the Center, remember, we need non-perishable toiletry items as well. The Center provides "Hygiene Bags" for our clients to assist them with their basic needs. Many of these items are things that cannot be gotten with food stamps and yet they are necessary items. If you can help The Center with these items we would be most appreciative. The basic needs items are: Shaving Cream, Deodorant, Hand Lotion, Hypo-Allergenic Body Lotion, Mouth Wash, Body Soap, Band-Aids, Hair Conditioner, Shampoo, Toothpaste, & Toilet Paper.
Containers for this collection are given out on the 3rd week-end of every month. On the 4th weekend frozen meals and the above mentioned articles are returned and delivered to the Center.

Stations of the Cross
On Holy Thursday, the students of St. Catharine School showcased their talents in a very beautiful and moving prayer service—a live Stations of the Cross. Many students are talented actors, narrators, singers, dancers and musicians who shared their blessings with us.

Mary’s Child Pro-life Ministry
Great news for Divine Mercy Sunday and the Year of Mercy!!! 471 babies were confirmed saved from
abortion during the recent 40 Days for Life campaign which ended on Holy Week. There must have
been many more because often a young mother shows up for an abortion, sees the prayer warriors,
recognizes them as a sign from God, and then goes home to have her baby. Praise God!
Our next meeting will be Wednesday, April 13, at 7:30 PM at St. Catharine’s Convent, Spring Lake.
New members are always welcomed. Mother’s Day Rose Sale plans will be discussed. We recently
welcomed Greg, Kevin and Christine into our ministry. So happy to have you!
Hope to see everyone on April 13th.
For further information on our ministry contact maryschildprolifeministry @gmail.com.
Youth Ministry Update Thank you to everyone that attended the Youth Town Hall meeting last month. A follow up meeting will take place on Tuesday April 27th at 7pm in the SCS Gym. Anyone with an interest to get involved with the youth of the parish is encouraged to attend.

On the Lighter Side……
A Jewish mother was concerned that
her 16 year old son showed no interest
in what he wanted to be. Her neighbor
suggested an experiment. “When he
comes home, we’ll put a 20 dollar bill,
a bottle of whisky and a Bible on the
kitchen table. If he takes the money,
he will be a business man, if he takes
the whisky, he’ll be a lawyer, if he
takes the Bible, he’ll be a Rabbi.”
When he came home, the boy took the
$20 bill, drank the whisky and walked
out with the Bible under his arm. “My
God” the mother screamed “He’s
going to be a Catholic Priest.”
