THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH

You may have noticed that I completely missed my turn to write in the magazine

last time in spite of prompting! I have to be honest and say that I completely

forgot until it was too late. Perhaps it was covering for my colleague’s sabbatical

and then going on holiday straight away that did it?

How frantic the pace of life has become for so many people having to ‘do’ so

much. I have heard the comment that “we were created human beings, not

doings” I am trying to keep attending a weekly contemplative prayer group and I

am also trying to make time for quiet during the week and I would highly

recommend this practice.

The season of Advent, which will soon be upon us, is a time for us to explore the

mysteries of faith in light of the coming of Jesus whose birth we celebrate at

Christmas. My moan every year I think is that Christmas adverts appear earlier

and earlier! I do hope that you will find times of quiet in the coming days so that

after contemplation you will have enough energy to celebrate Christmas.

In our Methodist tradition, January is when we hold our Covenant services and my

colleague Rev’d Richard Atkinson will be leading the Covenant service at our

chapel on January 7th at the usual time of 9-30 a.m. It is a service which

challenges us to think about God’s love!

We have been keeping the chapel open for visitors and we have been blessed by

the numbers who have visited. It is a privilege to be trusted with their prayer

requests which we include in our worship time. It is important to us that we can

offer this space for people to ‘be’! Opening days and worship times will alter

slightly during January and February.

Of course, we are continuing our efforts to raise funds for the development

project and the development group are continuing to meet under the

chairmanship of Rev’d Peter Bedford whom you may have seen around at various

events this year. It is beginning to feel quite exciting - watch this space, as they

say!

Shalom,

Janet.

FROM THE ARCHIVES

For the article in November about the Malhamdale men who died in the 1st

World War, I was unable to trace information about Joseph Berry or Robert

Francis Jones. Mike Leeming has now kindly supplied the following ...

From the West Yorkshire Pioneer, 26th April 1918

AIRTON SOLDIER’S DEATH

“We deeply regret to report the death of Rifleman Joseph Berry of the 2nd

Battalion New Zealand Rifles, who was killed in action on March 26th, while

serving in France. Rifleman Berry, who was 32 years of age, left Airton for New

Zealand over nine years ago. He was a fine young man, a credit both to the

colony and the old country. This sad intelligence was conveyed to his parents,

Mr and Mrs John Berry, Daisy Mount, Airton, by wire. Much sympathy is felt in

the village and neighbourhood for the bereaved family.”

Private 30124 Robert Francis Jones, 3rd Battalion Grenadier Guards.

Only son of Elizabeth Jones (nee Winskill, born in Settle) and the late Robert F

Jones, both of whom were schoolteachers. Although he was born in Croydon,

Surrey, in 1899, his maternal grandfather came from Settle and lived at

Malham Tarn. Robert Francis died on 23rd August 1918, aged just 19, probably

during the battle of Albert, in which the Guards' Division was heavily involved.

Many thanks Mike.

Executive Headteacher: Mrs S Peel

There are lots of activities and events taking place at school in the run-up to

Christmas. On Mondays we are running an after school Christmas Club

making decorations, cards and all things festive!

There is a Bags2School collection on the 1st

December so if you have any

old clothes/shoes/coats (not bedding) could you put it in a black bin liner and

drop off at school before this date (presuming you have received your Dec

Parish Mag by then!)

We are having an Open Morning at school on Monday 11th

December from

9.30-11.30pm – everyone is welcome to come and look round our magnificent

school and see the children in action. Coffee and refreshments will be served

– we look forward to welcoming you. Please tell family and friends and

anyone else who has pre-school children in the locality about our fantastic

school.

We are also looking forward to taking part in the Christingle Service at

Kirkby Malham Church on Sunday 10th

December at 5.30pm where we will

be performing our Christmas Nativity with all the children taking part.

In the run up to Christmas we are having a non-uniform day for Children in

Need where the children are coming to school in something ‘spotty’. Tempest

Photographers are in school taking portraits and family photos which are

always handy for Christmas presents. A Dance Showcase is taking place too

when parents can come and see their children perform a dance routine they

have been learning this term with the dance teacher, Howard Bullock.

We are also looking forward to our whole school trip to see Beauty and the

Beast at King George’s Hall, Blackburn on December 13th

. The School PTA

are kindly paying for transport costs and the children will be enjoying an interval

ice cream donated by Chris and Gemma from the Victoria pub for funds raised at

a recent Halloween party.

We would like to take this opportunity of wishing everyone in the Dale

a very Merry Christmas and a peaceful New Year.

MALHAMDALE

THROUGH THE YEARS

This month’s article comes from the Leeds Mercury on 5th January 1926.

BEAUTY-SPOT CRASH

EDGE OF MALHAM COVE FALLS 175 FEET

“Two hundred and fifty tons of rock comprising the outer and western edge of

Malham Cove, became dislodged and crashed from a height of 175 feet into

the bed of the river Aire, which has its source in the heart of the cove. A

huge gap is left in the face of this picturesque rock formation, which is

visited by thousands of tourists during the year.

The Cove is situated nearly a mile north of the village of Malham, and about

12 miles from Skipton. Two hundred feet high, and rising sheer from the

water level, it looms in a gigantic crescent of stone over the aperture from

which emerges a tiny stream – the river Aire.

The fall has resulted from a quick thaw following the recent sharp frosts in

the district. The rock was forced out of position. In falling it struck a lower

ledge, on which it is believed to have splintered, and then it bounded down

on its way to the river.

The largest piece of rock actually bounded across the river. The great rock

which fell now lies in three gigantic boulders, two smaller ones, and a number

of fragments. The largest of the three is estimated to weigh more than a 100

tons and lies 175 yards from the point on which it crashed.”

NB The stream at Malham Cove is now known as Malham Beck. The source of

the River Aire is south of Malham village at Aire Head.

AIRTON WI

Our quiz team headed off to Hampsthwaite for the finals of the Federation

quiz. Here Norma, Alison, Jenny H, Pat, Laura and Sharon delved deep into

the grey matter and achieved the well-deserved status of “podiumed bronze”

with 64 points, only 6 points behind the winning team, Burton Leonard WI.

Our AGM was livened up with a quiz, keeping in training for next year, and

supper accompanied by a glass of G&T. Veronica is now President, Judith is

Vice President, Norma remains Treasurer and Sharon continues as Secretary,

The Committee are Veronica, Judith, Sharon, Norma, Carol, Laura and Alison.

Vicki is our valued well-wisher, a smiling face when you need it.

The next meeting, entitled “Cakes and Pud’s” will be at Airton Quaker

Meeting House on 13th December at which we are promised to have our taste

buds tickled!

New members and visitors are always welcome to join us.

BOOK REVIEW - AIRTON BOOK CLUB

‘The Running Hare’ by John Lewis-Stempel

This is a true tale about a farmer and his

management of one field over the course of a year.

The author farmer knows the land and uses beautiful

prose to describe the nature he encourages back into

the farmland, in spite of the ‘chemical brothers’ and

their modern , intensive farming methods in

neighbouring fields. His enthusiasm for observing the

lives of local hares and birdlife makes the reader

feel they are part of the project. It is a superb piece

of nature writing , with jottings of interesting

historical facts and poetry. ‘A stirring rural fantasia’

as The Times puts it. Our conclusion ? A very

enjoyable read.

ASHLEY'S FARM

The TB test for the cattle was clear and the vet did a ‘PD’, or pregnancy

diagnosis test on the cows at the same time which showed that they were in

calf, which means they should start to calve in the spring. At this time of

year I buy quite a few young cattle or ‘stirks’ in from the local auction

markets, which are around 6 months old and match the calves off my cows

which have now been weaned from their mothers. These stirks will be

reared as a group on silage throughout the winter and will grow on until I

sell them next Autumn / winter as store cattle at around 18 months of age.

The term ‘store’ means that they will be bought by another farmer who will

finish them for meat, often arable farmers who have a ready supply of grain.

Our son Frank made his first cattle purchase during the half term holidays.

Gisburn Auction Market run a Young Farmer scheme where children can buy

a calf or stirk but do not need to pay for it, so long as they do the bidding,

look after it and then bring it back to the auction to sell in March. Any profit

they make is theirs (although if the animal has not increased in value then

they have to pay for it!). Frank bought a lovely Belgian Blue bull calf which

he has called ‘Blue Cheese’. He’s just about to start training him to walk on

the halter, ready for his big sale day in March.

I have also made a slightly unusual purchase and some of you will have seen

our donkey. Instead of returning home from Skipton Auction market with

cattle as intended one day, I came home with Louis the donkey for the kids.

He was being sold by the Heseltine family from Hesketh Farm Park at Bolton

Abbey and was too lovely to resist! He’s settled in very well and is a really

friendly character.

The sheep have all been tupped and the tups, including the tup lambs, have

done their work well. We will leave the sheep quiet now for a few weeks to

let them settle in lamb, before scanning them in early January. The sheep

are run through a crate, where the scanning man puts an ultra sound sensor

on their tummies and looks at a screen to see how many lambs they are

having. A spray mark is put on the sheep to indicate one, two, three or four

lambs. I will then sort the sheep into groups according to how many lambs

they are having to prioritise feeding during the remainder of their

pregnancy. The sheep having singles, i.e. one lamb, will be taken back up to

the limestone pastures at Malham because they have lower energy needs

Page 11: The Parish Church of St Michael the Archangel, Kirkby in … · 2017. 12. 18. · 1 The Parish Church of St Michael the Archangel, Kirkby in Malhamdale Vicar: The Rev'd. Geoffrey

11

than a sheep having multiple lambs. Feeding of the sheep with

concentrated feed will start 6 weeks before they are due, so sometime in

January. Some feeding of haylage may start before then depending on the

weather and the condition of the grass over the next couple of months.

In the mean time the daily routine centres around feeding the cattle with

silage, bedding with straw where necessary and keeping the manure scraper

system running. The animals do not really understand the idea of Christmas

and there will be work to done on the day, but I do like to give them a

generous helping of silage on Christmas Eve in the hope that it will give me

a few hours off to enjoy my Christmas dinner!

GARGRAVE AND MALHAMDALE COMMUNITY LIBRARY

Library Update - December 2017

On Friday 22nd December, as a final Christmas family warmer, we are showing

the comedy “What we did on our Holidays.” Written by Andy Hamilton and

Guy Jenkins of BBC “Outnumbered” fame the film stars David Tennant,

Rosamund Pike, Billy Connolly and three wise-cracking children. The customary

Café style seating will be in place, so please bring your own refreshments.

Village Hall doors open 7pm and the film starts at 7.30pm. Tickets are £5, on

sale at the door. Under 16’s, free admission.

On Friday the 19th January we start the year with an illustrated talk by

Gargrave’s very own intrepid explorers, Duncan and Bee Faulkner and family,

who spent their summer holiday circling the Globe.

The film shows will restart in February, more details in next month’s magazine.

Hopefully you’ve all visited the newly refurbished Library and are impressed

with the transformation; again thanks go to everybody who worked hard to

ensure the success of the project. Much to our surprise and joy the Library was

named as NYCC Library of the Month in September which is a reflection on the

dedication of our Volunteers, the success of the Summer Reading Challenge and

our performance against the targets set each year by NYCC. Thank you all.

Every so often we start to run short of Volunteers and we are approaching the

time when two or three more Volunteers would ease the load and ensure that

the Library can continue to operate. Volunteers usually work a 3 hour shift with

two volunteers per shift. Most Volunteers do about one shift a month. Others

will not do a shift for a couple of months others two shifts a month. How many

shifts and when you do a shift is entirely up to you. We operate a web-based

booking system so, at any time of the day, you can see which slots are available

and, if any are convenient, enter your name. As a new Volunteer you will always

be on duty with an experienced Volunteer.

Being a Volunteer is a great way to meet people. If you would like to help keep

the Library running and are able to spare 3 hours a month, or whatever you can

manage, to help behind the counter, please have a chat with one of our current

Volunteers or speak to our Volunteer Coordinator, Patsy Simpson (749489), for

more information.

Please note that the Library will be closed for the Christmas break from Friday

22nd of December and reopen on Wednesday 3rd January.

tried it once, found it to be great fun and a good

The Kirkby Malhamdale Educational Trust is a well established but little known

local charity. We have limited funds to support educational and further

development activities for local residents. The following is a guide to help you to

meet our criteria and for you to consider whether you are suitable for funding:

1. You must reside in Malhamdale.

2. You must be under 25 years of age when you apply.

3. We will only consider a personal application from the person applying and it

should be personally signed by you.

4. The amount of the award will be at the discretion of the Committee.

5. You should include a clear statement of the amount you are requesting, the

reasons for the funds and a plan of action, including your overall costs and how

you will obtain additional funds where the costs are greater than the requested

amount.

6. If funding is granted, we would appreciate a brief letter once your project/task

has been implemented to inform the Committee as to how the grant helped you.

The Committee meets in April and October to consider applications which

should be made to:-
