I'm delighted to have been invited to edit this edition of the Parallel Community Newsletter. I met Hamish Miller in the late 1980s, soon after he moved to Treviscoe. Although we lost touch, I thought about him often over the years: he was certainly an inspiring man. Several years ago I wanted to reconnect with him, and was dismayed to discover that he had died a few months before. When I knew Hamish he had yet to make his mark on his new home: walking round the garden with Ba last month I was delighted to see how beautifully they had planted and landscaped the grounds. It’s a most uplifting place, and Hamish and Ba have been wonderful custodians of this beautiful piece of Penwith. My family are from Cornwall, and I’ve lived in Penwith on and off over the years. I’ve now been settled here for over 5 years, running a small business, Magus Technical Services, which provides sound and lighting for events such as concerts, conferences, festivals and theatre, and associated audiovisual services. I also keep sheep and poultry on a smallholding.

It’s good to be home: I feel a strong sense of belonging here, as if I’m rooted in Penwith. Over the next few months and years I look forward to deepening those roots in the local community, and, more widely, within Parallel Community. A newsletter is only as interesting as its contents, and if this one is going to help PC members to connect with each other, to share knowledge and understanding, and to grow as a real community, we need you, our readers to contribute. These are not Parallel Community events, but they’re

organised and lead by PC member Caro Woods. There are

two, on the 15th

June and the 5th

July, each from 11am to

4pm at St Michaels Mount, Cornwall.

The Chakra Walk is a guided meditation, carried out in

silence. Caro will guide the walk from the causeway up to

the chapel at the top of the mount, pausing at key points

along the way.

In the process you will journey through the seven colours

of the rainbow connected to subtle energy centres of the

body, focusing on your physical and emotional connections

to the special topography of St Michaels Mount.

Participants are asked to bring one coloured item which

says something about themselves. After a picnic lunch the

group will have the opportunity to discuss the walk.

For details and booking, please contact Caro Wood:

Freedom from Torture.

Rock On at the Giant’s Quoit!

Come and watch the final phase of this gargantuan project

on Midsummer’s Day, Saturday 21st

June at 3pm.

This will be a milestone, or even capstone! The object is to

complete the restoration of Carwynnen Quoit by raising

the capstone

'Rock on at the Giant's Quoit'-the placing of the 9.8 tonne capstone will be at approximately 3pm on 21st June. This is a community event - all are welcome to celebrate this

momentous occasion. Bagas Crowd and the Red River Singers will entertain us starting at 4pm. An especially composed Ballad will be performed. Bring a picnic, enjoy good company and watch the final construction phase of this unique Heritage Project. More details to follow.

‘This monument, which collapsed in the 1960s, is the focus

of a remarkable and unique project, a community

endeavour to rebuild the monument, develop the site and

its surrounding landscape as an educational and leisure

amenity, and create a sustainable monument for future

generations to enjoy. The project, run by Sustrust is a great

example of how rebuilding prehistoric monuments today,

in the modern landscape, can impact on social well-being.

The focus has not just been the monument, but also the

ecology of the surrounding landscape.

Poetry and music have been composed and performed at

the monument. Hundreds of people have been involved in

this project in a whole range of different ways, and

crucially the focus has not just been on what happened in

the distant past, but also the relevance and role of the

dolmen for people today and into the future.

Holding the Light

Holding the Light, an art installation by Angela Shaw, was

described by the artist as “A collaboration of land, light and

people.”

The aims of this art installation, over a 10-mile radius of 8

sites around Mounts Bay and as far as St Ives was to

connect energetic points in the landscape, and recreate a

network of light in order to:

focus – give time and attention to the light;

engage – come together with others and connect

to the land;

slow down, to notice, to reflect;

reveal hidden processes, both internal and

external;

defocus - expanding consciousness beyond the

immediate;

show gratitude and respect towards the light, life,

the environment, and our fellow beings on Earth;

revitalize ancient connections and traditions

through ceremonial ritual;

create new stories for the future

The artist says: “Thank you to members of Parallel

Community who participated in this event, and to others

who connected energetically in different ways. Angela

Shaw ([email protected])”

Being Nature – extending civil rights to the natural world

By Mumta Ito

As the destruction of the biosphere continues, we need to

establish new legal systems to protect what remains.

Mumta Ito proposes a new beginning for environmental

law based on extending 'civil rights' to the natural world.

With the premise that all life is protected - and then seeks

to find the balance required to maintain our dynamic

relationship with all life - not the other way round.

Despite the proliferation of environmental laws and

treaties, destruction of the natural world still continues

apace.

One of the key reasons that this occurs is because our

environmental laws - which see nature as property -

legitimise it.

It starts with the premise that all of life isn't protected,

leaving us with the impossible task of reactively legislating

to carve out protections, rather than proactively creating

the frameworks needed to create the ecologically thriving

world that all wish to inhabit.

The laws that we already have - such as the EC Habitats

and Species Directive, the UK Wildlife and Countryside Act

and the US Endangered Species Act - selectively protect

species proven to be under risk.

However, in a radically interconnected world, where

according to scientists dozens of species are literally going

extinct every day (i.e. species loss at 1,000-10,000 times

the background rate); this approach is no longer enough.

The process for updating the schedules detailing the

protected species takes years. In the time it takes to prove

scientifically that another species may be under threat, it is

already too late.

Biodiversity offsetting?

Similarly, the proposed biodiversity offsetting schemes

which are designed to speed up the planning process, fail

to take into account the complex and interconnected

nature of our world.

Ecosystems are not fungible - destroying one and replacing

it with another simply doesn't work, as is evidenced by the

difficulties experienced around the world in the practical

implementation of these schemes.

These schemes also bring into question certain ethical

concerns - is it possible to place an economic value on life

itself? After all, which came first, life or the economy?

Strengthening the 'nature as property' paradigm and giving

piecemeal legislative protection is clearly not the answer -

so what is?

It was not long ago that our law also treated women and

children as 'property'. Born out of the civil rights

movement, recognising nature - which includes

ecosystems, rivers, mountains, species etc - as having the

right to exist, persist, renew and maintain its vital cycles

changes the face of environmental law.

It starts with the premise that all life is protected - and

then seeks to find the balance required to maintain our

dynamic relationship with all life - not the other way

round.

Why 'Rights of Nature'?

The highest protection our law gives is in the form of

'rights'. Law regulates human behaviour, but

predominantly between 'rights' holders. It recognises

broadly two types of 'rights' holder - human beings and

entities created by human beings such as corporations and

countries.

Everything else, including the natural world, is treated as

'property'. This means that environmental issues are

treated as planning issues and are dealt with in most

jurisdictions exclusively by the planning and administrative

courts, ignoring the wide ranging issues that are really at

stake when interfering with ecosystems in an interexistent

world.

At best all that can be achieved in court is the reversal of a

planning decision - only for a new revised application to be

submitted and the development usually goes ahead.

Outdated paradigms

Modern law in most countries operates within the

following outdated paradigms:

mechanistic (i.e. viewing the world as made up of separate unconnected objects interacting in a predicable way);

anthropocentric (i.e. viewing the world as existing solely for the use of human beings - this is where ideas about 'natural resources' and 'natural capital' derive basing nature's value on its utility to humanity rather than on its intrinsic value); and

Page 5: The Parallel Community is a linking network and a platform ... · This will be a milestone, or even capstone! The object is to complete the restoration of Carwynnen Quoit by raising

5

adversarial (competitive/retributive model where one party wins at the expense of another)

None of these paradigms reflect the full scientific reality of

how natural systems operate. This gives rise to the illusion

of a 'power-over' relationship with nature which has led to

our current predicament.

Being a part of nature, we cannot harm nature without

also harming ourselves. Science has long recognised a fluid

and complexly interconnected world.

Intrinsic value, not utility

However, our laws and general cultural attitudes fail to act

on this knowledge, to our detriment. We talk about

'sustainability' - yet our legal framework's fundamental

alignment is inconsistent with the very idea. It's time for a

change.

Rights of nature laws hold a vision of a world in which our

laws facilitate a culture that respects the profound inter-

existence of our world and supports healthy relationships

with all life. It extends our idea of community to include

the whole community of life - a concept also enshrined in

the UN's Earth Charter Initiative.

In doing so we create a legislative framework in which the

natural world is seen as an equal stakeholder in

maintaining the wellbeing of the planet - an active

participant that is worthy of our respect, rather than

something inert and solely there for human consumption.

It creates legislation that honours the law of

interconnection of natural systems and allows us to

protect nature for its intrinsic value rather than its utility

value to humans.

These laws also empower citizens to protect nature

through community ecological governance fostering

responsibility and catalysing positive social change. This is

why more and more countries are adopting this approach -

and why we are proposing that the European Parliament -

one of the most powerful political bodies in the world -

does the same.

How feasible is it?

Given that our current legal and the economic models

have been ineffective in halting the widespread

destruction of the biosphere, more and more countries are

looking at rights for nature as a sensible way forward.

Ecuador is the first country to have adopted rights of

nature in its constitution. Bolivia has adopted rights of

nature at the national level and appointed an Ombudsman

to deal with environmental issues directly.

Over 3 dozen municipalities in the USA (and counting ... )

including Santa Monica and Pittsburgh have adopted rights

of nature at the local level. These laws

recognise the rights of communities and natural communities which include ecosystems and nature;

grant citizens the right to defend the rights of ecosystems and nature

and subordinate the rights of corporations to that of ecosystems and people, insofar as their actions are against the common good.

Additionally, recent court decisions are following this trend

such as the one recognising the Wanganui River in New

Zealand as a living being with the same rights as a person,

and Costa Rican court's ruling that because the second

largest reef in the world is a living being, it cannot be

commercially exploited.

In Europe, Switzerland recognises the dignity of all beings

in its constitution; Spain recognises the rights of Apes;

Romania is proposing a law recognising dolphins as rights

holders, and even the UK government has publicly stated

that animals are sentient beings and not merely

commodities.

How is this different from a 'Law of Ecocide'?

The rights of nature approach, is different from the

Eradicating Ecocide campaign and other initiatives because

it changes the 'nature as property' paradigm.

A law of Ecocide would make extensive destruction of the

environment, a crime against peace. The focus is on

limiting harm, through the use of criminal law.

Any destruction that falls short of the legal definition of

'ecocide' would still be dealt with in the current

environmental law framework which deems nature to be

'property' and we are back where we started - in the

planning courts.

How can we bring about this change?

A group of lawyers, environmentalists, academics and

others have come together to bring a European Citizens'

Initiative ("ECI") to call upon the European Commission to

make a legislative proposal to the European Parliament

and the Council of the European Union to take a rights

based approach to environmental protection.

The growing team, which currently spans 13 EU countries,

is advocating the adoption of laws that recognise the right

of nature to exist renew and maintain its vital cycles.

Page 6: The Parallel Community is a linking network and a platform ... · This will be a milestone, or even capstone! The object is to complete the restoration of Carwynnen Quoit by raising

6

In doing so, all of nature will be granted status and

protection under our law that it does not currently have in

line with the most recent emerging paradigm in

environmental law that is happening around the world.

What is a European Citizens' Initiative (ECI)?

The ECI is a participatory democracy mechanism within the

EU, since April 2012, that allows citizens to propose a law.

It is therefore a direct way of empowering citizens to put

items on the EU legislative agenda.

The legal basis in is Article 11 TEU and Article 24 TFEU.

Regulation (EU) No 211/2011 sets out the detailed

requirements. It is an efficient way to bring about change -

if the EU adopts a proposed Directive then all the member

states are required to create laws implementing it within a

specified time-frame.

The European Commission wants citizens to play a more

active role in European political processes and the ECI is a

powerful way of doing this.

Call for Support

The ECI is a project that will be run across the whole of

Europe - as it is a citizen's initiative we need citizens to

actively participate in the process.

When we share our stories, we keep the dream alive…

By PC Core Team member Nathascha Heijen

On May 10th Parallel Community hosted a workshop for

George Hardwick called Creative Uprising. It was an

inspiring day for young and old where George took us on a

journey to find that what brings us joy and what thus could

be our gift to the world. We were gently immersed in a

playful kind of 'living multiple-choice' exercise, we shared

our stories, invented a new game, drew a blindfolded self

portrait, created an individual poem and lots more,

including laughs.

At the end we realised that it basically comes down to this:

we have been brought up in a world that is of 'The Old

Story' and it contains old ways of doing things. For

instance, who doesn't remember this: you go to school, get

your grades, get a job and stay there because then you are

financially 'safe' until your pension kicks in. Uh uh, no

longer!

Now 46, I am of a generation where I started out like that

but after 15 years of corporate service in a multinational

company, life decided that it was time for me to face some

fears. I had to break through this old thought pattern of

'study - work - stay put, whatever you do, stay put and

hold on to that job until pension'. Once the fears were

faced and a new idea about financial 'safety' had taken

root, life then also came up with the answers. I just had to

accept what was being offered completely out-of-the-blue.

It was that surprisingly easy.

The not-so-easy part was going through the experience of

the breaking down of old embedded thought patterns. It

can be really scary at times. However I learned that this

fear is natural because it originates from our subconscious

mind that wants to keep us 'safe'. What is more safe than

the known? Doing the same thing over and over again feels

safe because it is familiar. If subconscious mind had a

Facebook presence it would click LIKE each time you keep

within the protective boundaries of old patterning. But it

kept me from making a leap in consciousness that was

timely and necessary. So at long last I surrendered to fear

(basically had no other choice left) and trusted my inner

guidance that advised 'feel the fear but do it anyway'. And

wow, this did make room for change to happen.

In my case I had to go through this process by myself

because there was no mentor in my life (other than the

one that emerged from within and in nature – later

realising that this has been the case all along!). In general it

takes about 6 weeks to replace an old subconscious

thought pattern by means of conscious effort into a new

thought pattern. Or longer, if the subconscious pattern is

Page 7: The Parallel Community is a linking network and a platform ... · This will be a milestone, or even capstone! The object is to complete the restoration of Carwynnen Quoit by raising

7

very strong and unwilling to give way. It is possible to

mentor your subconscious mind though.

On June 10th, George came back to Cornwall to talk about

the importance of mentoring and how much this is needed

in this emerging new world. There is a huge shift in

consciousness going on. Millions of people are awakening

to a different truth than that of the Old Story.

Many remember that we volunteered, in service, to

enhance life on Earth in a time where the old ways would

be crumbling down and we would need to share a New

Story and invent new ways of going on. Soulful ways,

respectful ways and all-embracing ways.

It is not just the adults that are paving the way here. No,

there are also thousands and thousands of brilliant young

people all over the world who have fresh ideas and solid

plans! We need to listen to them too. And they will need

us to help them bring these so needed innovations into the

world. They need our wisdom, our particular knowledge

gained through our experiences, our genuine care and

consistent support!

Here is one thing that you CAN do to: each of us has had

their own unique experiences in life. We have at least one

story that could we could tell of our strength, our courage,

our hope or love. Share those stories, often (and in odd

places). Because you never know who overhears it. It

might just be exactly what someone needs to hear to make

that shift and leap forward.

For your story matters. It really does. You might think you

have nothing of importance to share. Remember then that

people do not randomly cross your path. They can be a

blessing to you or you to them. Take time to really listen or

to speak up and share a story from your life. With a

variation on one of Barry Brailford's quotes, know that

'When we share our stories, we keep the dream alive'. So

keep on sharing and let's light this place up! Yes, like we

are the stars of the human race...

Having participated in George Hardwick's events certainly

brought home to me the feeling that 'there is a job to do'.

My generation has one foot in the Old World (I still

remember the frequent frustration of using a typewriter!)

and one in the New World (now a self-taught digital

professional and dream keeper).

All of you who feel the same and know this to be true: we

are are the bridge builders between the younger and older

generations. I ask you, how could we bring together the

needs arising from the crumbling old world with the

solutions from the new world? Like others, I envision and

am grateful for the time that people from all over the

planet will collaborate in innovative projects that will

change the current structures.

Actually, it is already happening. People are connecting up

to share their wisdom, their knowledge and their unique

talents as input that benefit the whole. And if you wanted

to join in while breaking it down into smaller steps, then

mentoring where-ever you can is a good start. Facilitating

opportunities for people to meet and share stories is

another. Because much could spark off from such a local

meeting of passionate hearts. What an exciting time we

live in.

Thank you, George, for highlighting all the above and

getting us to act on what we know deep inside to be true.

May your gift shine on! For those interested in George's

book, Creative Uprising, that has all the practical tips you

ever need to live the life you love, please go to

Here is an inspiring video of a brilliant youngster

(http://youtu.be/U5sSlfvsgYA) : 8 year old Adam who

introduces a crystal grid that pulls in dark energy and

transmutes it to the light.

It took Adam about 10 minutes to build this grid which is

full of various crystals - Amethyst, Apophyllite, Celestial

Smoky Quartz, Clear Quartz points, Vogels, and several

Lemurian Seed Crystals. Adam didn't pull the pattern of the

grid out of a book or research it on the internet. Instead he

chose to listen to the guidance of the stones themselves.

Younger Members

The PC Core Team is keen to engage younger people in

Parallel Community, and explore what the generations can

learn from each other.

We would like to get some interaction going and thought it

would be a good start to ask a series of questions to our

younger (and our young-at-heart) members over the next

newsletters.

We invite you to send a short reply (max.150 words) and

look forward to reading your ideas.

Here is the first question: If you had unlimited power and

could change anything you like, what is the one thing that

you would change in this world?

If you’d like to take part, please send your answers to

[email protected]. We will publish a selection in

the next newsletter. Please say whether you’d like your

name to be printed, or if you’d prefer your answer to be

anonymous.

I know that there is more to this world than what our eyes see, that we just need to change our perspective and beliefs about what is 'truth'. Along my path I have developed an interest in creating a communal living situation, seeing how living in a community of like minded people caring for the land and one another would benefit all.
