“Women’s tears are beautiful. Divorced from the cold objective world, they are drops from the limitless fountain of love.”1 Since I wrote my last message, it seems as if this month has gone by in a flash. Many temple related events occurred while I too, have been trying to find a balance between those responsibilities and my self-care. With my previous experiences in the mental health field, I cannot stress enough how we all must tend to our own personal self-care however, I know that it is easier said than done. While looking back on the last few weeks and even the past few days, there was a common theme…I cried. During these moments of my falling tears I wondered what was happening to me. I found myself thinking, “Candice, you’re a highly emotional person,” as if that was a fault in my character. Because of my tearful reactions, I wondered if I had been overlooking my self-care. Various moments and events made me shed tears this month. I could be watching YouTube videos of people being reunited with their long lost pets and my eyes would well up with tears. As I reflected on and spoke about how much I appreciated my Stockton Buddhist Temple family and my Berkeley Buddhist Temple family at our Eitaikyo service, I was unexpectedly chocked up with emotion. And due to the loss of a relative in my family, I cried at the news that she had passed due to a battle with cancer at an age that was far too young. I had to remind myself that it was okay to cry and it was not a fault in my emotional and sensitive character. I think that I also found comfort in viewing my tears and emotions through Rev. Matsumoto’s Triple ‘A’ Life of awareness, authenticity, and appreciation. Through this wonderful tenet of Rev. Matsumoto’s teachings, I was reminded that I was going to be okay. I am becoming more aware of the causes and conditions of my life that have allowed me to be where I am today and feel fortunate to have the encounters with countess people through my work in the ministry. I am reassured that my tears and emotions are a distinct part of my unique and authentic self. Knowing that the Dharma guides me, while causes and conditions of my life shape the woman that I am, reassure me that I am okay just as I am. Also, acknowledging that Amida Buddha’s wisdom and compassion always surrounds me even when my tears are falling has created a deep appreciation for all of the events and feelings that I experience, which may not always be pleasant and happy. Due to my Triple ‘A’ Life and from Lady Takeko Kujo’s words from her poem above, I am comforted knowing that my tears are beautiful and come from a fountain of love. In Gassho, Rev. Candice Shibata 1 Takeko Kujo, Muyuge: Flower Without Sorrow (Los Angeles: The Nembutsu Press, 1985), 21.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Impermanence surrounds us and affects us every day. Currently, my wife is in Japan visiting with an infirmed aged relative, my older daughter left home to go to college, and my younger daughter, well…

The standard progression for high school, in my mind, was that my daughters would play volleyball in the Fall, basketball in the Winter, and swim in the Spring. As volleyball season progressed, I looked to the future and began asking my younger daughter, “So when are tryouts for basketball?” She would usually avoid answering the question or say quietly, “soon.” At times she would ask about not doing basketball to which I responded with the question, “why not?” Regardless of her answer though, I would say, “why don’t you just try it?” expecting full well that she would follow the standard progression. With the basketball season approaching and tryouts about to begin though, she came to me and my wife to state that she would not be trying out! Imagine the shock and horror that ran through me as, after a glorious 9 year career in Sangha basketball, I realized she will be retiring! When I finally came to (which took some time as I had to come to grips with the fact that she would be following a different path-one that I had not planned for), she explained that High School basketball is a very different world from the familiar one she had experienced and this decision had been wearing on her for some time. I realize that I had been giving her a hard time all because I was not willing to accept that a different path could exist, that she would not be following the standard progression. Or is it that I did not know the true definition of the “standard progression,” that the standard is progression towards something new?

We have some impermanence at the temple as well. Sara Jotoku, after many years of service, is stepping down as co-chair of the Satsuki Bazaar. We need a member to step forth to fill this most important role. We have a slate of candidates who have agreed to participate as members of our board. We thank them for the work they have already accomplished and for the work they will perform in the future. Look for ballots in your November mail. In addition, look for changes in our executive committee in 2017.

We look forward to seeing everyone soon!

In Gassho,

Takashi Nikaidoh BBT President 2016

On Denial

By Diane Ames

"Well, I'm glad you were talked into coming here with your 'mild cold'," said the doctor, "because, after

listening to your increased shortness of breath, I am giving you a handful of prednisone to take this

minute, putting you on a short course of the stuff for six days in all because the infamous side effects are

not so bad if you take it less than a week, nebulizing you with some strong stuff, and directing you to

nebulize four times a day while continuing  your four other asthma meds. If there is no improvement in

the shortness of breath by tomorrow, go to the emergency room. Is all that clear?"

At this point a semi‐human figure flew into the room on wings attached to his back, blasting

away on a trumpet.

"My God, who are you, flying in defiance of the laws of aerodynamics?" I exclaimed. "If you're

the Christian angel blowing the Last Trumpet, I can't say I'm surprised, after listening to the news."

"Wrong religion! I am the protective gandharva promised to nembutsu devotees in the

Tannisho, here to blast away your ignorance, or in modern parlance, your denial."

"I don't care who he is or how he gets around!" said the doctor. "Good for him! I'm tired of your

delusion that a 70‐year‐old asthmatic with a history of repeated pneumonia and increased shortness of

breath at the drop of a virus can have a mild cold!"

"Yes!" added the nurse. "We're weary of your quiet feeling that we're overreacting when we

hear you pant for breath as you stand up! Three bouts with pneumonia, and you keep saying that

because you've never started to asphyxiate, you have a mild case of asthma!"

"Stop saying the pn word!" I protested. "I've had my pneumonia shots!"

"Weren't those your father's last words?" said the gandharva.

"He lived to be 90! So why are you talking like I'm at death's door?"

"You're not!" said the gandharva. "But that's it! Your persistent denial is based on a deep fear,

awakened in your anxious mind by your first troubling diagnosis, that you'll be dead by Tuesday.

Actually, with modern medicine, worriers like you and your father often do live to be 90, which is one of

the crosses even Buddhist heavenly guardians have to bear. You have real health problems, but you're

not deathly ill‐‐yet. But viewing your asthma and other conditions through the distorting lenses of denial

and fear, rather than simply as they are, tends to make you preoccupied with them and thus more self‐

absorbed, which is hardly desirable for your spiritual state. I suggest that you say the nembutsu often in

between nebulizing. Also, meditate on the fact that everyone dies eventually and that it's the life you

live in the meantime that counts. Now excuse me, nembutsu followers need a lot of protecting."

European Shin Buddhist Conference, August 2016 By Detlev (Ted) Gempf

Last month I shared my experience attending the Jodo Shinshu Correspondence Course Workshop in Dusseldorf, Germany. Two days after it ended most of the participants traveled to Antwerp, Belgium for the European Shin Buddhist Conference. About sixty-five people attended in addition to numerous reverends from the mainland United States, Japan, and Hawaii. The lay participants came from all over the world but mainly the US, Canada, Europe and Japan. However, Brazil and Southeast Asia were also represented.

The conferences have been scheduled every two years for over ten years. This year it was Belgium's turn to host it. The next one will be organized by Jodo Shinshu members in the United Kingdom and will be held either in Southampton, England or in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. So mark your calendar for August 2018. The Hongwanji generously sponsored the event and funded the conference, such that members basically had to pay for only their travel and hotel costs.

Presentations were made by Jodo Shinshu followers at large and were not confined to the clergy, so thoughts, ideas, and personal experiences were of a great variety, provoking discussions and interactions so beneficial to our Buddhist beliefs.

The conference lasted for four days and most attendees were housed in the same nearby hotel. This allowed for lots of social interaction, such that conversations continued well after the formal conferences ended. In fact, that was one of the primary goals of the meeting: to meet other Jodo Shinshu believers from throughout the world and exchange ideas. E-mail addresses were readily exchanged for further dialogues and future references.

Towards the end of the conference, participants were given a bus tour of Antwerp, a city of historical and architectural significance. The city itself was an amalgam of cultures and languages. On the streets one could see and hear people from all over the world. In this part of Belgium, Flemish is the official language vs. French. However, English was common on the street as it slowly has become the international language of the world.

As part of the conference several new members attended a Kieshiki service, whereby they officially committed themselves to the Buddhist faith. Morning services were also held in the same small Jodo Shinshu temple, in walking distance of the hotel. Needless to say the temple was packed during these times, making for a feeling of community.

Towards the end of the conference all attendees and priests met at a local Italian restaurant where warm weather blessed the event that evening. Everyone sat outside before a multi-cultural plaza and enjoyed European living at its finest.

In Gassho.

Stockton Dharma Friends

The BBT was packed at the Oct. 16 Eitaikyo - Perpetual Memorial Service, with a visit by the Stockton Buddhist Temple members. At the center of the group photo is Rev. Candice Shibata, who grew up attending the Stockton temple. In her Dharma talk, Rev. Shibata expressed her heartfelt thanks in having her "Berkeley family and Stockton family" in attendance. Among the Stockton temple members who visited the BBT were Rev. Shibata's father and sister and dear friends.

In addition, the Stockton Dharma School and College YBA students also attended. Everyone enjoyed the delicious, light meal in the social hall after the service. And thank you to Sensei Tadao Koyama of the Florin Buddhist Church for being the BBT guest speaker at the Eitaikyo - Perpetual Memorial Service.

BBT Revives Tradition -- Temple Picnic The BBT revived a longstanding tradition on Sunday, Oct. 9 -- the annual temple picnic -- and drew a crowd of nearly 100 people for the fun event.

This year's picnic was held at Crab Cove in Alameda, and featured games, races, as well as bingo with prizes. There was a delicious variety of food -- ranging from grilled hot dogs and hamburgers (and portobello mushrooms) to sushi, salads, desserts and fruits.

A total of 73 adults and 23 children enjoyed a warm, sunny, beautiful day by the Alameda beach.

"The temple picnic was a wonderful day filled with food and fun. It was also an opportunity for our Sangha to come together at a beautiful location to be thankful for the countless conditions of our lives that allowed us experience that day with each other," Rev. Candice Shibata said.

Thank you to the many volunteers including: Gary Oda, who reserved the picnic site; Bradley Menda, who organized the games; George Yin and Dean Kaneshiro, who helped barbecue; Lena Yin and Mike Nagamoto, the picnic coordinators; Denise Kaneshiro, who helped with purchasing picnic foods; Don and Joanie Hamasaki and Stacey Uyeda, who helped wash dishes; and Kiyoshi and Emiko Katsumoto, who brought the tent.

BBT’S Bazaar Annual Gift Committee (BAGC)

This year in an effort to support the community at large, the Berkeley Buddhist Temple donated a portion of the proceeds from the Satsuki Bazaar to a non-profit organization. The 2016 recipient for the Berkeley Buddhist Temple Bazaar Annual Gift is Maya’s Music Therapy Fund. The non-profit organization fund fosters creativity, a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment for individuals with a wide range of developmental disabilities. Music therapy touches these individuals in a vey special way, it serves as the ‘bridge’ that allows them to emerge from their ‘own world’ and interact with the outside world and community around them. The Bazaar Annual Gift Committee (BAGC) was formed to help designate each year’s recipient. We would very much appreciate hearing from you regarding a deserving non-profit organization. To qualify, the non-profit should preferably serve the Berkeley area. Please help us by submitting the name of a potential recipient that you feel deserves consideration. Fill out the form below and return to Yuki Otake, 2121 Channing Way, Berkeley, CA 94704 or e-mail [email protected]. Deadline for submissions is December 4, 2016. Please note that all nominations are subject to approval by the Berkeley Buddhist Temple Board of Directors. Thank you for your assistance. Bag committee: Mimi Kagehiro
