Our Club is a nonprofit organization made up of a diverse group of families and individuals of all ages who share a love of snow sports. We have two simple goals: make skiing and snowboarding easier, more fun and more affordable; bring people together who enjoy these winter sports. Regular Membership Meetings are held October through March (the April meeting is a designated social meeting,) on the first Wednesday of the month at the Jefferson Lakeside County Club. 1700 Lakeside Ave, Richmond, VA 23228 Doors open at 7 pm.

Adopted by the Board of Directors on 5/18/16 Discrimination Policy Richmond Ski Club (“RSC”) is a 501(c)(7) non-profit organization. It is the policy and commitment of RSC that it does not and shall not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion (creed), gender, gender expression, age, national origin (ancestry), disability, marital status, sexual orientation, or military status, or otherwise as may be prohibited by federal and state law. Richmond Ski Club is committed to providing an inclusive and welcoming environment for all members, guests, volunteers and vendors. Harassment Policy Harassment is generally defined as a course of conduct which annoys, threatens, intimidates, alarms, or puts a person in fear of their safety. I think that our first meeting of the year in October was a big success! Kudos to Paul Greiner, Valerie Chafee, and Karen Noakes for all your hard work setting this up. The rooms have plenty of space and are well set up. We had excellent attendance. As promised for the December meeting, we will have additional tables set up for sitting and we will have plenty of good food for everyone.

As I write this message, most of our week long ski trips are full or nearing capacity. We also expect that the Snowshoe Superbowl trip will sell out. Space is still available for Canaan Valley and Ballhooter Weekend at Snowshoe, plus we also have the midweek trip to Stowe Vermont, which is a great budget option. I am also hearing a lot of interest in the Dominican Republic trip, which I believe will be very popular due to the price and quality of the resort.

A number of people have asked me about trip insurance. I definitely recommend it, particularly when you book a trip several months in advance because you never know if you will get injured, ill, have a death in the family, etc. I think it is important that each person look at the policy closely before purchasing and make sure it works for you. They have different deductibles and conditions. You will want to make sure you are covered if you get injured doing in bounds skiing (most policies will not cover you for “extreme skiing”). Many people in our club have found satisfactory polies at Travel Protectors, Divers Alert Network, Squaremouth.com, or Allianz. This year, I purchased a year long travel policy for my wife and I from RoamRight for under $200 a person (your price will vary based on age and options selected).

We’ve got a lot of things coming up. Snowshoe is going to be hosting a pass pick up event at Bryan Park on November 4 and we will be there to provide information about the Ski Club and play some music. We will be putting up a Cheer station for the Richmond Mar-athon on November 11 and all are welcome and encouraged to come out. We’ve got several hikes and bike rides as well as a Tacky Light Christmas Light Tour and the Warren Miller ski movie. We have decided to do Condo Crawl at Wintergreen on January 7th.

Before you know it, we will be out on ski trips!

This Fall I led two fun-filled bike rides for RSC Members and their friends! I wanted to say a big “Thank You” to all the people who came out and made both of the rides such successful events! The first ride was our Virginia Beach ride in early September. We had fabulous weather and as you can see from the picture, we had a great turn out and a good time was had by all!! Our second ride was October 21st and again the weather was perfect for biking! We took the Capital Trail to the Williamsburg Winery where we sampled some of the local wines before heading back. For those of you who missed out, I will be planning more rides starting in March or April. Hope to see you in the Spring!

WINTERGREEN ADAPTIVE SPORTS – All We See is Possibilities

For some time The Richmond Ski Club has been a generous supporter of

Wintergreen Adaptive Sports and their annual Wounded Warrior Weekend; the club

makes an annual donation to WAS, largely as a result of proceeds from beer sales

at the annual State Fair of Virginia for which many of you volunteer.

Two years ago, RSC initiated an opportunity to enhance these efforts by

encouraging individual donations by club members. We are continuing this effort

by reaching out to RSC membership and requesting individual donations to

Wintergreen Adaptive Sports in support of their ongoing year-round programs and

their Wounded Warrior Weekend (February 2-4, 2018).

Donate by Nov 11th and turn $2 into $3!! The Donovan Foundation Matching Fund Campaign will give $1 for every $2 donated - Optimize your donation by giving now!

From now through November 11, please consider sending your individual donation

payable to Wintergreen Adaptive Sports, and mailed to Richmond Ski Club, P.O. Box

8912, Richmond, VA 23225. Your donation is100% tax deductible (WAS is a 501(c)

(3) organization) and a good opportunity for a year-end tax deduction. All checks

will be presented together from the club to WAS to show the united support of the

Richmond Ski Club. IMAGINE, if every member donated $10 or $20 what a

difference we could make! Donations will also be accepted at the Fundraising/

Merchandise table at our November 1 meeting at Jefferson Lakeside Country Club.

Thank you for your continued support! Sue Mullins Ramsey, RSC Fund Raising

RICHMOND SKI CLUB SERVES BEER AT STATE FAIR OF VIRGINIA

AT THE MEADOW EVENT PARK FOR SIXTH YEAR

The Richmond Ski Club once again provided beer servers for the State Fair of Virginia for the first 5 days of the Fair’s ten day run starting Friday September 29. 347 man-hours were provided by 52 RSC members and others assisting on behalf of RSC. The Parrothead Club of Richmond and Friends of the Richmond Mounted Squad also participated during this time-frame to ensure that all shifts and locations would be covered ade-quately. A handful of RSC members also rose to the call to come out and assist on the last Saturday of the Fair to help make sure there were plenty of volunteers on a traditionally strong concert night. RSC anticipates that they will receive in excess of $3,000 which will sup-port the club’s charitable efforts. Parrotheads and Friends of Mounted Squad will also receive donations commensurate with their man-hours provided. Many thanks to the following RSC participants:

Sunday afternoon city hike November 5th at 12pm

Meet at Forest Hill Park picnic shelter #2 at the end of the road near the trailhead.

Daylight savings time begins, so let’s go burn some daylight and a few calories on a 7.5 mile hike in the city. Fall is a great time to enjoy the trails along the James and have some outdoor fun! Begin at Forest Hill Park parking lot at picnic shelter #2 at the end of the road. We will follow Reedy Creek down to the Buttermilk Trail and head towards the Nickel Bridge. We will walk behind Hollywood Cemetery & Maymont Park towards downtown on the Northbank Trail. Then on to Belle Isle and to the footbridge across the river and pick up the Buttermilk Trail back to our starting point at Forest Hill Park. HIKING DISTANCE: 7.5 miles (Aprox 3 hours depending on # of stops required and trail condi-tions) TRAIL TERRAIN: A little of everything – mostly dirt, rocks, & gravel, with a little pavement, a

lot of tree roots, and even a few stream crossings. Depending on the weather, the trail can be a little muddy and slippery in places so dress accordingly. DIFFICULTY: Moderate-to-Difficult. We are in the city but the trail is very challenging in areas.

WHAT TO BRING: Sturdy, broken-in shoes; water, and snacks. Dress in layers depending on the weather.

Meet in the parking lot at picnic shelter #2 in the very back of the parking lot.

For more information or details please contact Brenda Bird at [email protected] (804-437-3609)

Please RSVP so that we have your contact information in case the hike is cancelled for any reason.

NO PETS PLEASE!

After Thanksgiving Bike Ride on the High Bridge Trail

Friday, November 24th @1:00pm

Need to burn those extra Thanksgiving meal calories? Start out the holiday season on the right foot...burning calories. Join us for this “Black Friday” ride on the wonderful High Bridge Trail. Finish your shopping, head to Farmville, and enjoy a leisurely ride in the cool November air. We will start and end in Farmville.

Trail: This is a multi-use trail ideally suited for hiking, bicycling and horseback rid-ing. The trail, once a rail bed, is wide, level and generally flat. Its surface is finely crushed limestone. Its centerpiece is the majestic High Bridge, which is more than 2,400 feet long and 125 feet above the Appomattox River. This final section opened April 6, 2012. The original bridge was built in 1853 as part of the South Side Railroad. The current steel tower bridge was completed in 1914.

Where to meet: Downtown Farmville at the High Bridge Trail Sign at Main Street Plaza.(Charlies Waterfront Grill parking lot) There is plenty of free parking in the municipal parking lot on Main Street next to the trail (near Greenfront).

Allow at least 1 to 1 ½ hours of drive t ime depending on your starting point.

Once on our bikes we will pedal east towards the High Bridge. We will stop at the bridge for a water break and photos, head towards Rice and return back to Farmville.

This is an easy, flat, scenic trail suitable for everyone.

Public Restroom facilities are located at various spots along the trail.

The total biking distance is approximately 15-16 miles at a leisurely pace.

What to bring: Helmet, Water, and your bike.

Optional stop at the new Third Street Brewery in Farmville after the ride for those interested.

Contact Brenda Bird at [email protected] or 804-437-3609

Bicycle Rentals are available at www.highbridgebikes.com. Reservations suggested. Located at 318 N Main Street in Farmville. 1-434-392-7275. I would suggest the 3 hour rental option.

Great ride for both kids and adults - NO Pets allowed.

Powder Mountain is truly an unknown gem! With the recent expan-sion, it has 8,464 acres of skiable terrain suitable for all levels of skiers and boarders. They cap tickets sales at 1500 so you are guaranteed to have no lift lines and you can find fresh powder for days after a snowstorm. The mountain has a unique set up with various places where one can take a sin-

gle run on a snow cat to drop you off in nearly untouched snow, all while being in bounds. Advanced skiers can also experience Powder Country, where you ski down to a bus stop that will drive you back up! Don’t worry, there are plenty of groomed trails also. Snowbasin is a different type of mountain with ultra luxurious lodg-es, high speed gondolas, and extensive grooming. You can ski on the same run as Olympic Downhillers. We will be staying in Ogden UT, about 20 miles from each resort. We will have a PRIVATE bus to take us to and from the mountain, but if you

also have the option to take the town bus for a small fee. The Marriot Court-yard is THE most convenient hotel to the Historic District with many restau-rants ranging from budget to high end. Within walking distance is the Salo-mon Center with indoor rock climbing, indoor skydive, bowling, and a movie theater so there is lots to do on the off day. Please note the airplane may have limited baggage space so we will try to make arrangements to have some bags sent out the day before.
