Gardening Corner

What to Plant:

Bedding Plants: To add color to the winter garden, plant masses of petunia, pansy, snapdragon, lobelia, alys-

sum, and viola.

Bulbs: Amaryllis is a popular plant for the holiday season. They can be forced to bloom now or planted out-

doors for spring blooms.

Herbs: Plant herbs that thrive in cool weather. Some to try are parsley, thyme, sage, dill, fennel, garlic, com-

frey, and cilantro.

Garden Vegetables: Reliable cool season vegetables to plant this month include English pea, radish, cabbage,

beet, and broccoli.

What to Do:

Poinsettias: One of the most popular indoor holiday plants is poinsettia. With proper care, this colorful plant

will give weeks of color.

Cold protection: Don’t prune cold-damaged plants yet. Wait until warm weather returns to cut back plants.

Vegetable Garden: Make sure that seeds and transplants are properly spaced to have good development of

tubers and vegetables.

Houseplants: Inspect regularly for pests on indoor plants. Keep in mind that plant specific temperature, light,

and humidity are key to ensuring that indoor plants thrive.

Soil Test: If plants did not perform as desired this year or new plantings are being planned, a soil test may be

a good idea.

Compost/Mulch: Fallen leaves provide the carbon ingredient needed for successful composting and also make

a good mulch.

Pests: While cooler weather generally means fewer pests, some populations actually increase at this time of

year. Continue monitoring and treat as needed.

Door-to-door sales

Recently one of our neighbors was expressing concerns regarding people who have been seen in Osprey Pointe selling "door-to-door". On occasion someone asks why we don't have a sign at our entrance that designates Osprey Pointe as a "no solicitation" community. The answer is that we are not allowed to do this. Each homeowner can express their wishes against solicitation by posting a sign at their own front door entrance, but a community cannot post a sign on behalf of all homeown-ers. Door-to-door sales people must obtain a home solicitation sales permit as required by law, and they are allowed to ring your door bell unless your own property is posted. If you see suspicious behavior from a solicitor, you should contact the police. For example, peeking into cars that are parked in our driveways, peeking into home windows, refusing to leave a property when asked to do so, or refusing to show a permit when requested....all are behaviors that should be reported.

Did you Know? What is the Winter Solstice?

The Osprey Flyer Volume 22 Issue 12

Page 9

10 Things About the December Solstice you might not know

1. In the Northern Hemisphere, the December Solstice is the winter solstice and the shortest day of the year. In the Southern Hemisphere, it is the summer solstice and the longest day of the year, because equinoxes and solstices are on opposite sides of the planet.

2. Most people count the whole day as the December Solstice. However, the Solstice is actually at a specific moment - when the Sun is exactly overhead the Tropic of Capricorn. In 2017, the December Solstice is on December 21, at 16:28 UTC. Due to the Time Zone difference, some locations will have their solstice on a different date.

3. Solstices happen twice a year - once around June 21 and then again around December 21. On the June Solstice, the Sun is directly overhead the Tropic of Cancer (latitude 23° 30′ North) in the Northern Hemisphere, while on the December Solstice, the Sun shines directly over the Tropic of Capricorn(latitude 23° 30′ South) in the Southern Hemisphere.

4. The December Solstice can happen on December 20, 21, 22 or 23, though December 20 or 23 sol-stices are rare. The last December 23 solstice was in 1903 and will not happen again until 2303.

5. The term solstice comes from the Latin word solstitium, meaning 'the Sun stands still'. This is be-cause on this day, the Sun reaches its southern-most position as seen from the Earth. The Sun seems to stand still at the Tropic of Capricorn and then reverses its direction. It's also common to call it the day the Sun turns around.

6. In the Northern Hemisphere, astronomers and scientists use the December Solstice as the start of the winter season, which ends on the March Equinox. For meteorologists, on the other hand, winter began three weeks ago on December 1.

7. During winter in the Northern Hemisphere, the Earth is actually closest to the Sun. Different seasons are not defined by how far the Earth is from the Sun. Seasons occur because Earth orbits the Sun on a slant, with an axial tilt of around 23.4 degrees. Therefore different amounts of sunlight reaches the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, causing variation in temperatures and weather patterns throughout the year. In fact, the Earth is on its Perihelion - the point on the Earth's orbit closest to the Sun - a few weeks after the December Solstice.

8. Most places in the Northern Hemisphere see their earliest sunset a few days before the Solstice and their latest sunrise a few days after the Solstice. This happens because of the difference between how we measure time using watches and the time measured by a sundial.

9. If you are in the Northern Hemisphere, the increase rate of daylight hours depends on your location's latitude - in more northern latitudes you will see a rapid increase in daylight hours compared to if you're in the more southern latitudes.

10. Many cultures around the world hold feasts and celebrate holidays around the December Solstice, including Christmas, the Feast of Juul, Saturnalia, Chaomos, and Santo Tomas.
