The Italian AmericanSocial Club at Palm Coast, Florida

Dear Members,Everything is going smoothly here at the club. February was a very busy month with our dinner dance and all our outside events.

Our Valentine Dance was a huge success. The decorations and food were great thanks to the chairpersons and all the volunteers.

We had our yearly Bereavement Service. Once again Cathie and her committee performed a very impressive ceremony. Please let the club know if you hear of a member passing away so that we can put their name in our memorial book and include them in our service next year.

This month we elected two new directors to fill out the unoccupied terms. Congratulations to Donna Macaluso and Chuck Buglione who were elected to our Executive Board. Thanks to George Zampella who served as pro tem until this election.

This month we have two club events coming up. On March 10th we are having St. Joseph’s Day Dance. Tickets are now on sale. This promises to be a great event so get your tickets as soon as possible. On March 31st we are having “The Honeymoon is Over”. We will be showing a video of the Mock Wedding we had in January and some of the cast members will be there. This will be in the lounge. The cost is $12.00. We can only have 100 people there so if you would like to come get your tickets early. It should be a fun night.

Next month we will have nominations for our Executive Board for the coming year. There are openings for President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer for one year terms and three directors for two year terms. Anyone wishing to serve on the board should give their name to Rosanne Vastano, the election chairperson. We will also have nominations from the floor. The election will be at our May General Meeting. Absentee ballots will be available for this election.

A member made a motion at our last General Meeting to overrule the board rule not allowing anyone over the age of 12 wearing shorts on Friday nights. Shorts are allowed on Tuesday nights but the board felt that Friday nights should be a little dressier. If you agree or disagree please come to the meeting to voice your opinion. Your vote is important.

Several members have not picked up their new membership cards. The cards are in the office and can be picked up any week day between 9 am & 1 pm. The member must sign for their card.

I am going to stress again the rule for ordering food from the club. Orders can only be taken on Monday and picked up on Friday. No one should go directly to the chef to order anything. There are no exceptions to this rule.

Once again our kitchen passed inspection with flying colors. We try very hard to keep it in perfect order.

Until next month – Stay well and God blessPresident Pat LaCorte

HERITAGE COMMITTEE

TOSCANA(Tuscany)

Toscana is a region in Italy, north of Rome and overlooks the Tyrrhenian Sea and backs up to the Apennine mountains; it has a population close to four million. It is also the most visited region in Italy and the world with upwards to ten million visitors a year. The region contains six localities designated as World Heritage Sites. They are the historical centers of Siena, San Gimignano, Pienza, and Florence (the capital and the most visited locality within the region). The other two are the square of the Cathedral of Pisa and Val d’Orcia (known for its landscape). The region is the true birthplace of the Italian Renaissance, giving birth to many notable people in the arts and sciences, Petrarch, Dante, Botticelli, Michelangelo, Macchiavelli, Luca Pacioli, and Puccini. The region has several museums, containing works of these great artists, scientists, and others, they are the Uffizi, the Palazzo Vecchio, the Pitti Palace, the Chianciano Museum of Art, and the Academia di Belle Arti where in the Tribuna stands the original statue of David by Michelangelo. The region also contains many loggias, piazzas, fountains, buildings, churches and cathedrals that are works of art. When Italy became a country (1861) one of its first tasks was to select a language, since the peninsula of Italy consisted of many principalities, autonomous regions, etc. It did not have a unifying language. They may all have derived from Latin but they were dialects and not uniform. Thus, due to the impact of the arts and sciences written and spoken in the Tuscan dialect, the new government selected it as the national tongue. However, the full standardization of Italian occurred in the decade of 1950-1960 with the rise of mass media and television. Nevertheless, a modern Italian can read works of many of the great artists of the Renaissance with ease. Tuscany is also famous for its cuisine and wines.
