Introduction to Retreat Worship

Welcome to the retreat. Worship is at the center of our life as a community. When the Order of Saint Luke worships, it is our bread and butter—not in the sense of “making a living” but as experiencing anew the life given us in our baptism into Christ Jesus, our sharing in his dying and rising.

We freely use words like Eucharist, liturgy, Word and Table, chant, and “daily office.” This can sound like “in speak” and I caution us longer-term members to use these and other words with care, and to expand the terminology into ordinary speech for those new among us who want to fully participate.

Eucharist—from the Greek word for thanksgiving associated with Holy Communion.

Word and Table—is a phrase United Methodists use for Holy Communion that underscores the essential balance of proclamation of the Word of God and of sacramental sharing in the Word of God in the Eucharistic acts of taking, blessing, breaking, and giving/sharing.

Liturgy— is a term that derives from the Greek words for “work” and “people” and so refers to the public, corporate acts of the people in the worship of God. Both the daily offices and the Holy Communion represent this public work, much like a beach clean up or the old fashioned barn-raising.

Chant—we sing the Psalms and canticles (scriptural songs) using what are called “tones”—usually as simple sustained note for the syllables in a line of words and then change notes at the end of the line.

Daily Office—over the long history of the church with its roots in Jewish prayer we join in the unceasing prayer of the church. The daily office developed from the early centuries of the church. As a religious order we share in punctuating the hours of the day with prayer, especially sunrise, zenith (noon), sunset, and night (bedtime). In addition, we pray what we call the “diurnal” offices (through the day offices) at mid-morning, mid-day, and mid-afternoon. On Saturday evenings we replace Evening Prayer with the Resurrection Vigil, anticipating the coming of the Lord’s Day.

We welcome liturgical diversity within the long history of worship rooted in the apostolic community and early centuries of the church and we recognize that worship must always be suited to its community and context. We look back and forward to be with Christ in the present.

As of 2012, we have a new book that contains the liturgical texts that allow us to pray and praise God in celebrating “Word and Table,” in praying the “daily office,” and in observing liturgies specifically oriented to our communal life, like “Profession” and “Investiture” of officers. The

book, The BOOK OF OFFICES AND SERVICES of the Order of Saint Luke contains these services and a selection of hymns and songs, Psalms, and canticles for use when we worship together.

We think we know a lot (and collectively we do), but we are still learning together. Since teaching and learning, study and liturgical practice are part of our charism (vocation), we seek to include and bring each other along the path of deeper formation and sacramental living. We seek to be inclusive of all who yearn to worship God in spirit and in truth.

Worship at retreats is deeply nurturing. At retreat of the General Chapter we keep the hours of the daily office and daily Eucharist. This refreshes and sustains us for the journey upon our returning to our homes and places of ministry.

There are three essential observances that punctuate our liturgical life together at the retreat: The Feast of Saint Luke (October 18), the Word and Table Healing Service, and the Service of Profession, when some make a first public profession of annual vowed membership in the Order and others reaffirm annual vows.

Vestments are welcome at any or all services. Some of us regularly vest for services. Others only vest for some services. If you don’t have vestments you are no less a part of the worship. Many of us like the sense of belonging that goes with wearing the “habit.” Our habit is an alb (generally white—alba means white), a red cincture (rope tied around the waist), and a scapular (derived from an apron worm by monastics to keep their robe clean. Our scapular is purely “decorative” as we never peel potatoes or milk cows in our habit!

If you have questions, do look for someone that looks like they might know something and ask your question. He or she will be happy to answer the question or point you to someone they think will know the answer.

He gives power to the faint, and strengthens the powerless. Even youths will faint and be weary, and the young will fall exhausted; but those who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.

CONFESSION AND PARDON: Hear these words of Scripture: "If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness."

[I JOHN 1:8-9, NRSV, ALT.] Let us confess our sin before God. Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves; and we are diminished in soul and body. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us, so that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways giving glory to your holy name. Amen.

[BCP, ALT.] - silent confession -

Hear the good news: Christ died for us while we were yet sinners; that proves God's love toward us.

[ADAPTED FROM ROMANS 6:8] In the name of Jesus Christ, I declare to you: you are forgiven.

FIRST READING Jeremiah 31:27-34

A reading from Jeremiah: The days are surely coming, says the LORD, when I will sow the house of Israel and the house of Judah with the seed of humans and the seed of animals. And just as I have watched over them to pluck up and break down, to overthrow, destroy, and bring evil, so I will watch over them to build and to plant, says the LORD. In those days they shall no longer say: "The parents have eaten sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge." But all shall die for their own sins; the teeth of everyone who eats sour grapes shall be set on edge.

  16

The days are surely coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant that I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt--a covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, says the LORD. But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. No longer shall they teach one another, or say to each other, "Know the LORD," for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, says the LORD; for I will forgive their iniquity, and remember their sin no more.

The Word of Life. Thanks be to God.

SECOND READING 2 Timothy 3:14-4:5

A reading from Paul’s second letter to Timothy:

But as for you, continue in what you have learned and firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it,and how from childhood you have known the sacred writings that are able to instruct you for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, so that everyone who belongs to God may be proficient, equipped for every good work. In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I solemnly urge you: proclaim the message; be persistent whether the time is favorable or unfavorable; convince, rebuke, and encourage, with the utmost patience in teaching. For the time is coming when people will not put up with sound doctrine, but having itching ears, they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own desires, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander away to myths. As for you, always be sober, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, carry out your ministry fully.

Herein is wisdom. Thanks be to God.

  17

Then Jesus told them a parable about their need to pray always and not to lose heart. He said, "In a certain city there was a judge who neither feared God nor had respect for people. In that city there was a widow who kept coming to him and saying, 'Grant me justice against my opponent.' For a while he refused; but later he said to himself, 'Though I have no fear of God and no respect for anyone, yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will grant her justice, so that she may not wear me out by continually coming.'" And Jesus said, "Listen to what the unjust judge says. And will not God grant justice to his chosen ones who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long in helping them? I tell you, he will quickly grant justice to them. And yet, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?"

Morning Canticle BOS, p. 28

Psalmody Psalm 46 WR, p. 300

Scripture Jeremiah 38:14-28 A reading from Jeremiah: King Zedekiah sent for the prophet Jeremiah and received him at the third entrance of the temple of the LORD. The king said to Jeremiah, “I have something to ask you; do not hide anything from me.” 15Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, “If I tell you, you will put me to death, will you not? And if I give you advice, you will not listen to me.” 16So King Zedekiah swore an oath in secret to Jeremiah, “As the LORD lives, who gave us our lives, I will not put you to death or hand you over to these men who seek your life.” 17Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, “Thus says the LORD, the God of hosts, the God of Israel, If you will only surrender to the officials of the king of Babylon, then your life shall be spared, and this city shall not be burned with fire, and you and your house shall live.18But if you do not surrender to the officials of the king of Babylon, then this city shall be handed over to the Chaldeans, and they shall burn it with fire, and you yourself shall not escape from their hand.”19King Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, “I am afraid of the Judeans who have deserted to the Chaldeans, for I might be handed over to them and they would abuse me.” 20Jeremiah said, “That will not happen. Just obey the voice of the LORD in what I say to you, and it shall go well with you, and your life shall be spared. 21But if you are determined not to surrender, this is what the LORD has shown me— 22a vision of all the women remaining in the house of the king of Judah being led out to the officials of the king of Babylon and saying, ‘Your trusted friends have seduced you and have overcome you; Now that your feet are stuck in the mud, they desert you.’ 23All your wives and your children shall be led out to the Chaldeans, and you yourself shall not escape from their hand, but shall be seized by the king of Babylon; and this city shall be burned with fire.” 24Then Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, “Do not let anyone else know of this conversation, or you will die. 25If the officials should hear that I have spoken with you, and they should come and say to you, ‘Just tell us what you said to the king; do not conceal it from us, or we will put you to death. What did the king say to you?’ 26then you shall say to them, ‘I was presenting my plea to the king not to send me back to the house of Jonathan to die there.’” 27All the officials did come to Jeremiah and questioned him; and he answered them in the very words the king had commanded. So they stopped questioning him, for the conversation had not been overheard. 28And Jeremiah remained in the court of the guard until the day that Jerusalem was taken. Here ends the reading.

Second Scripture 1 Corinthians 6:1-11

Page 22: THE ORDER OF SAINT LUKE October 18-21 Claremont California€¦ · Claremont School of Theology. Her interests include the use of process and feminist thought for the critical interpretation

  22

A reading from Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians: When any of you has a grievance against another, do you dare to take it to court before the unrighteous, instead of taking it before the saints? 2Do you not know that the saints will judge the world? And if the world is to be judged by you, are you incompetent to try trivial cases? 3Do you not know that we are to judge angels—to say nothing of ordinary matters? 4If you have ordinary cases, then, do you appoint as judges those who have no standing in the church? 5I say this to your shame. Can it be that there is no one among you wise enough to decide between one believer and another, 6but a believer goes to court against a believer—and before unbelievers at that? 7In fact, to have lawsuits at all with one another is already a defeat for you. Why not rather be wronged? Why not rather be defrauded? 8But you yourselves wrong and defraud—and believers at that. 9Do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived! Fornicators, idolaters, adulterers, male prostitutes, sodomites, 10thieves, the greedy, drunkards, revilers, robbers—none of these will inherit the kingdom of God. 11And this is what some of you used to be. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God.

Translation: May it be Your will, G-d, our G-d and the G-d of our fathers, that You should lead us in peace and direct our steps in peace, and guide us in peace, and support us in peace, and cause us to reach our destination in life, joy, and peace and return us in peace. Save us from every enemy and ambush, from robbers and wild beasts on the trip, and from all kinds of punishments that rage and come to the world. May You confer blessing upon the work of our hands and grant me grace, kindness, and mercy in Your eyes and in the eyes of all who see us, and bestow upon us abundant kindness and hearken to the voice of our prayer, for You hear the prayers of all. Blessed are You G-d, who hearkens to prayer.

The Order Of Saint Luke

Membership in the Order of Saint Luke lies in the daily living out of the Rule of Life and Service. If you believe that you are truly called to a life of discipline, prayer, and community (both dispersed and assembled) then The Order of Saint Luke may be the “place” to live out that commitment. In making the vows of membership, one declares that: A. I will affirm the apostolic hope B. I will live for the Church of Jesus Christ C. I will magnify the sacraments D. I will seek the sacramental life E. I will promote the corporate worship of the Church F. I accept the call to service as put forth by the discipline of the Church and the Order of Saint Luke G. I will abide by the rules of the Order and will indicate my commitment by study, service, gifts and practice The payment of gifts and tithes is to support the work of the Order but is not the basis for membership.

WHO WE ARE A RELIGIOUS ORDER The Order of St. Luke was formed to bring about a recovery of the worship and sacramental practice, which has sustained the Church since its formation in Apostolic times. At the same time we seek to help the Church rediscover the spiritual disciplines of the Wesley's as a means of perceiving and fulfilling the mission for which the Church was formed. ...ROOTED IN THE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH The Order of St. Luke was founded in 1946 in the former Methodist Church. Our moving and sustaining source is that vision of John and Charles Wesley who sought to bring about a sacramental as well as evangelical revival in the church. We support the universal Church's seeking to become perfect in love in this world. ...DEDICATED TO SACRAMENTAL We magnify (lift up the importance of) the sacraments. We believe that the Church is the redemptive Body of Jesus Christ, preserving and reforming His Body. We support the commitment of the emerging undivided Church that the service of Word and Sacrament will become normative for Christian worship. ...AND LITURGICAL Liturgy is the “work of the people” in offering the worship of the Church to God, in union with Christ and in the power of the Holy Spirit. This is most richly effected when the entire people may consciously, fully and actively participate. ...SCHOLARSHIP While worship addresses the subjective part of our being, it is, first and foremost, an objective activity designed to give thanks and praise to Almighty God. We believe that we must understand the “why” as well as the “how” if we are to lead the Church into claiming more fully its identity and mission which are God-given. ...EDUCATION We support the efforts of the Church-at-large to increase the full worship and sacramental education in the seminaries. Additionally, we offer opportunities for learning through annual retreats, which bring together leading scholars in these fields. ...PRACTICE We believe that the sacraments provide spiritual nourishment that empowers us to live a positive and healing witness before the world. We share in the celebration of the sacraments with frequency and regularity and offer continuing instruction in their meaning and implications. As Christians seek to strengthen their spiritual lives, they often feel alone. The Order of St. Luke seeks to assist persons to grow closer to God through a life of discipline, which includes, ongoing Lukan spiritual formation. We believe we are formed or shaped by our intentional experiences in faith. These are found in corporate worship, community and individual retreats, praying the Daily Office, devotional exercises, music, and other intentional spiritual and physical exercise.
