Introduction1. InthefuneralritestheChurchcelebratesthePaschalmysteryofChrist. ThosewhoinBaptismhavebecomeonewith thedeadandrisenChrist,at theendof theirsacramentallife,1 will passwith him from death to life, to be purified in soul andwelcomed into thefellowshipofthesaintsinheaven.Theylookforwardinblessedhopetohissecondcomingandthebodilyresurrectionofthedead.TheChurchthereforecelebratestheEucharisticsacrificeofChrist’sPassoverforthedead,andoffersprayersandpetitions forthem. InthecommunionofallChrist’smembers, theprayerswhichbringspiritualhelptosomemaybringtoothersaconsolinghope.22. In celebrating the funeral rites of their brothers and sisters, Christians proclaim theirPaschalfaithinfidelitytotheGospelandofferintheFuneralMassthesacrificeofthedeathandresurrectionofChristsothatthedeadmaybepurifiedoftheirsinsandadmittedtothePaschalfullnessoftheKingdom.TheOrderforFuneralsforusebytheOrdinariateserectedundertheauspicesoftheApostolicConstitutionAnglicanorumcœtibusgivesexpressiontothe Anglican liturgical patrimony which has nourished many in their faith in theresurrectionofJesusChristfromthedeadandthehopeofeternalglory.Itsuseisthereforerestricted to those clergy and faithful who belong to one of the Personal OrdinariatesestablishedundertheApostolicConstitutionAnglicanorumcœtibus.33. IncasesofpastoralnecessityorintheabsenceofapriestordeaconincardinatedinanOrdinariate,anypriestordeaconincardinatedinaDioceseorinanInstituteofConsecratedLifeorSocietyofApostolicLifemaycelebratethefuneralliturgyaccordingtoTheOrderforFuneralsformembersoftheOrdinariatewhorequestit.44.TheOrderforFuneralshasbeenarrangedinthreesections:TheOrderforaVigilfortheDeceased,TheOrderforaFuneralMassandTheOrderforFuneralsOutsideMass.5.TheChurchaccompaniesherchildrenthroughouttheirearthlypilgrimageandespeciallyatjourney’send.SheofferstotheFather,inChrist,thischildofhisgrace,andshecommitsto the earth, in hope, the seed of the body that will rise in glory. This offering is fullycelebrated in the Eucharistic sacrifice; the blessings before and after Mass are

sacramentals.5 As theEucharist is theheart of thePaschal realityof Christiandeath, thefuneralofabaptizedpersonisnormallycelebratedwithinthecontextofaFuneralMass.6.AftertheFuneralMass,theriteofAbsolutionattheBieriscelebrated.Thisriteisnottobe understood as a purification of the dead—which is effected rather by the Eucharisticsacrifice—butas the last farewellwithwhich theChristiancommunityhonoursoneof itsmembers before the body is committed to the earth. This rite is accompanied by thesprinklingwithholywaterandthecensing. Thesprinklingwithholywater,whichrecallstheperson’sentranceintoeternallifethroughBaptism,andtheincensation,whichhonoursthebodyofthedeceasedasatempleoftheHolySpirit,mayalsobeconsideredassignsoffarewell.7. ThecelebrationofaFuneralMass ispermittedonanydayexceptSolemnities thatareHolydaysofObligation,ThursdayofHolyWeek(HolyThursday),thePaschalTriduum,andtheSundaysofAdvent,Lent,andEaster.8.Incelebrationsforthedead,whetherthefuneralserviceitselforduringvigils,prayersatthegrave,oranyothercelebration,emphasisshouldbegiventothereadingsfromSacredScripture.TheseproclaimthePaschalmystery,supportthehopeofreunionintheKingdomof heaven, teach respect for the dead, and encourage the witness of Christian living.Likewise,TheOrderforFuneralssuggestsanampleuseofpsalmodywhichexpressesgriefandstrengthensgenuinehopeintheresurrectionofthedeadinChristJesus.9.AccordingtotheancientChristianpractice,theChurch’spreferenceisforthecustomofburying the dead in a grave or tomb, as the Lord himselfwilled to be buried. Christianfuneralritesarepermittedforthosewhochoosetohavetheirbodiescremated,unlessitisshown that they have acted for reasons contrary to Christian principles.6 In cases ofcremation,theashesofthedeceasedarealwaystobeburied,orproperlyplacedinanicheofamausoleum.10.Forthecelebrationofthefuneralriteswhenthebodyiscremated,referenceshouldbemadetotheliturgicalnormsoncremation.7TheCelebrationoftheFuneral11. The ordinary minister (celebrant) of the funeral service is the priest. For funeralswhich take place outside ofMass, a priest or deaconmay preside. In the absence of anordained minister, a lay person may lead the community in some of the prayers andreadingsofTheOrderforFunerals,particularlyatavigilservice.Inthiscase,theliturgicalgreeting‘TheLordbewithyou’isnotused.12.Thecelebrant,consideringthepastoralcircumstancesandthewishesofthefamilyandparishcommunity,shouldmakefreeuseofthechoicesaffordedintherite.

13.Thebierissetdowninthechurchsothatthefeetofthedeparted,exceptinthecaseofapriest, are toward the altar. ThePaschalCandlemaybe lit andpositionednear the bier.Accordingtolocalcustom,candlesmaybelitaroundthebody.14.TheVigilfortheDeceasedoranextendedperiodofprayerbeforeaFuneralMassmaybeaccompaniedbytheappropriatecanonicalhourfromtheOfficefortheDead.15. EitherblackorvioletvestmentsmaybewornduringaFuneralMass. Inthecaseofafuneralofachildwhodiedbeforeattainingtheageofreason,whitevestmentsareused.16.Theuseof“HolyGhost”insteadof“HolySpirit”ispermittedaccordingtolocalcustom.17.ForanycircumstancesthatarenotcoveredinthisRite,referenceshouldbemadetotheRomanRitual,OrderofChristianFunerals.

IntroductionSprinklingthecoffinwithholywaterattheentranceofthechurch,thecelebrantsays:With this water we call to mind N’s baptism.As Christ went through the deep waters of death for us,so may he bring N to the fullness of resurrection and lifewithalltheredeemed.
