Congratulations to Jemma Pilossof from Year 12 on the award of the Victor Chang Science Medalion. The award is recognition of Jemma’s high level talent and application in all of her science subjects. Jemma will have the award presented at a special ceremony next week. Part of the award is a tour of the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute in Sydney, a state of the art high level scientific research laboratory.

This week our school hosted sports leaders from other schools across the district as part of the 2015 Premiers Sporting Challenge. Students rotated through a wide range of sports to allow the further refinement of their sports leadership skills. The day was incredibly smooth and positive.

Goods news this week that the tender for the much anticipated and planned for rebuild of the schools’ Basketball Courts has been signed. The successful tenderer, local firm L-Don Sports will begin work in the near future and have the job finished by mid to late February ensuring we have state of the art multi-purpose courts with all the bells and whistles. Students should be playing tennis, basketball, netball and volleyball on the new courts at the start of the 2016 school year. This project has been a long time in the fundraising and planning phases and it is exciting to see all the work finally come to fruition. I would like to commend the many parents who have made donations and the P&C who together have collective raised most of the money required. This facility once complete will be an asset for many years to come. Pictured below are the courts in their existing dilapidated condition.

On Tuesday the 10th of November, twenty year eight and nine Premier Sporting Challenge students were involved in the ‘Leading with Action’ workshops. A variety of development officers travelled to OHS to educate, inform and upskill our students in building leadership skills, running a coaching session, designing modified drills and designing lesson plans. The sports that were offered on the day were; football, rugby union, rugby league, tennis, netball, touch football, cricket, softball and sailing. The enthusiasm and involvement from all students involved was exceptional. They are all to be commended on the respect they showed to the officers and visiting staff members, their engagement and participation, and their inviting nature as they welcomed fellow students from surrounding schools to OHS. The next stage of this program takes part in early 2016, and involves our newly skilled and trained Premier’s Sporting Challenge team to teach, guide and educate younger students from surrounding primary schools. This will be a great opportunity for our students to put their newly developed skills into practise and to experience the role of a coach.
