INTRODUCTION

This docu%ent provides a brie' su%%ary o' the value

proposition 'or Oracle Real Application Clusters database

technolo#y.

Oracle database so't-are has traditionally been con#ured in

such a -ay that a sin#le copy o' the Oracle so't-are runnin#

on a sin#le server %ana#ed a sin#le database. In this

environ%ent/ the 0uality o' service delivered by the Oracle

so't-are -as pri%arily deter%ined by the characteristics o'

the underlyin# operatin# syste%/ hard-are and stora#e. The

Oracle database so't-are could be no %ore scalable or

available than the hard-are/ operatin# syste% and stora#e

allo-ed.

As a result/ the de%and 'or %ore scalable and available

databases beca%e a *ey driver o' hard-are innovation. The

'act that Oracle inherited %any o' its operational

characteristics 'ro% the underlyin# server plat'or% created a

%ar*et 'or hi#hly scalable and available servers. Such

%achines -ere sold at hi#h %ar#ins because their proprietaryen#ineerin# created substantial business value. Oracle1s

dependence on the underlyin# hard-are plat'or% ste%%ed

'ro% the *ey architectural li%itation that no %ore than one

server could be used to %ana#ed a sin#le database -ith hi#h

per'or%ance/ inte#rity and transparency. One database %eant

one server/ and the 0uality o' the database service depended

pri%arily on the 0uality o' the server.

2o-ever/ in une 556 Oracle released Oracle7i -ith Real

Application Clusters. Oracle7i RAC re%oved this *ey

architectural li%itation/ %a*in# it possible 'or a collection o'

database servers to cooperate in the %ana#e%ent o' a sin#le

Oracle database. This allo-ed Oracle to deliver #reater

scalability and availability than had previously been possible

-hile si%ultaneously reducin# cost and i%provin# 8e!ibility. In

anuary 554 Oracle released the second %a9or #eneration o'
