01_RISKY BUSINESS: MOVING MISSION CRITICAL APPS TO THE CLOUD
THE NINE CHALLENGES TO
CLOUD MIGRATION
In core business applications, the stakes
are higher than in office productivity
suites, and their reliability, performance
and availability demands are different to
“the next big thing” in web apps.
It’s one thing to move test-and-dev
environments or productivity and
collaboration to the cloud; it is another
01 DOWNTIMECan the business rely on a
cloud vendor to run a core
business application? Will the
vendor be able to restore it as
quickly as in-house experts
if it goes down?
02 PERFORMANCEIf a core business application
underperforms, the bottom line
could take a hit. What happens
if the chosen cloud platform
doesn’t perform or scale as it’s
supposed to?
03 SECURITYWill a new platform have
unexpected security risks?
Can the business trust that
the cloud platform is
adequately secured?
04 COMPLEXITYMigration of critical applications
to cloud is a careful, often
gradual process, as the cloud
platform is proven over time
with real world workloads. How
well will this work, keeping a
mix of on-premises and cloud
working well together?
05 RE-ENGINEERING COSTSWill getting the application
running on the cloud
infrastructure require major
surgery? Could those changes
trigger a domino effect of
unintended consequences to
downstream applications?
06 TARGETING THE RIGHT LEVEL OF CLOUD
Should the business use a vendor’s
applications (Software-as-a-
Service), its development platform
(Platform-as-a-Service), its cloud
servers (Infrastructure-as-a-Service),
or a combination? Getting it wrong
can have long-term ramifications.
07 LOSS OF IT GOVERNANCE CONTROLS
The ease of spinning up new cloud
infrastructure and deploying code
can lead to poorly controlled IT
infrastructure, risking stability,
security and cost control.
08 VENDOR LOCK-INIf the chosen cloud platform
doesn’t work out, will the
business be free to “bail-over”
to another platform, or be
locked in?
09 “ELASTIC” COSTS
All that cloud elasticity can
result in bill shock. Sure, on-
premises data centres are
expensive to run, but their
stubborn inflexibility
means costs are less
likely to spiral out of
control quickly.

altogether to risk destabilising the
software that runs the moment-to-
moment transactions of the business.
For a CIO charged with keeping core
IT systems running, there’s no greater
example of “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”,
and, in relation to migration to cloud,
there are good reasons for that.

THE ORACLE CLOUD ADVANTAGE
02_WHY ORACLE CLOUD IS THE MISSION-CRITICAL CHOICE
SECURITY : NOT AN OPTIONAL EXTRA
Security is top of the list for CIOs. In
Oracle Cloud, enterprise-grade security
is an automatic inclusion, not an extra
cost. Oracle’s existing, proven security
control systems are built into every
level of the stack. The security starts
at the silicon level – it is no accident
that Oracle’s SPARC processors are
immune to the severe in-memory data
vulnerabilities affecting x86 processors.
Unlike some vendors that ask you
to “just trust us”, Oracle provides full
transparency – Oracle Audit and Identity
and Access Management services are
included with Oracle Cloud Infrastructure
at no additional cost to enable
comprehensive resource governance
and access.1
MAXIMUM COMPATIBILITY
The same Oracle technology that runs
in corporate data centres today also
runs Oracle Cloud. For existing Oracle
customers, this can make migrating
from on-premises to cloud much easier
than with competing vendors’
platforms, and less expensive than
running Oracle software on other
providers’ cloud platforms.
Oracle also understands that large
enterprises need long migration runways
and it takes time to prove IT solutions
and build business confidence. Migration
doesn’t have to happen all at once
– Oracle Cloud can run on-premises
systems hand-in-hand with cloud-based
equivalents with 100% compatibility.
For organisations that have particular
challenges with cloud, such as data
sovereignty or internal policy compliance
requirements, Oracle Infrastructure-as-a-
Service (IaaS) and Platform-as-a-Service
(PaaS) can be installed and operated on
client premises behind their firewall.

Pricing is based on Oracle’s standard published pricing for bring your own license and Amazon’s standard published pricing as of March 1, 2018. Each workload compared shall be evaluated based on the actual required number of OCPU/VCPUs, the amount of storage, and the time required to complete the workload. The minimum workload is one hour for this offer. If Oracle determines that you are due a credit, we will apply this credit to your Universal Credit cloud account. Please contact your sales team to exercise this offer. Offer valid through May 31, 2019.
Oracle understands the requirements
around supporting critical core business
applications and has designed Oracle
Cloud with them in mind.
CHOOSING THE RIGHT LEVEL OF THE CLOUD
STACK – IAAS, PAAS OR SAAS – IS EASY WITH
ORACLE, AS THE ONLY CLOUD PROVIDER WITH
A COMPREHENSIVE OFFERING IN EACH LAYER.
ORACLE DOESN’T HAVE AN INTEREST IN PUSHING
ONE OR THE OTHER STRATEGY – IT CAN ADVISE
ON THE BEST OPTIONS, INCLUDING HOW TO
BEST TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE INTEGRATION
OPPORTUNITY BETWEEN THE LAYERS.
OPEN AND FLEXIBLE
Vendor lock-in isn’t part of Oracle’s
strategy with Cloud: the platform is
built from the ground up on industry
standards – making it possible to lift and
shift in, or out, without proprietary vendor
technology roadblocks. “We learned over
decades with on-premises technology
that standards are very important, that
interoperability is very important, that
upward compatibility is very important,”
says Oracle Founder and Chief Technology
Officer, Larry Ellison.
GET MORE FOR LESS
Despite all of the above benefits,
Oracle Cloud isn’t sold at a premium
to less capable public cloud providers.
In fact, Oracle’s promise is superior
performance on Oracle Autonomous
Database with lower pricing than its
major competitor – half or less than the
same workload running on Amazon
Web Services.²

03_ORACLE CLOUD THE MOST INTEGRATED CLOUD STACK
QUESTION_Do you choose the cloud provider
that’s strong in infrastructure, but lacking a broad
dev platform? Or the one with the strong dev platform
and the weak Software-as-a-Service offering?
ANSWER_Oracle Cloud provides a complete stack
with strong capabilities in each segment. This allows
each layer of the stack to access the others and it is
this integration that creates exponential benefits.

SOFTWARE-AS-A-SERVICE (SAAS)
WHAT IS IT?
Oracle’s formidable portfolio of
Software-as-a-Service is used in the
largest companies across the globe.
ERP, CRM, CX, HCM and hundreds
of other applications.
VITAL STATISTICS: Nearly 1000 SaaS applications,
used by customers in more than 195
countries around the world, supporting
55 billion transactions each day.
UNIQUE ADVANTAGE: Oracle gives customers the ability
to activate small components.
For example, rather than subscribing
to a whole ERP solution, clients can
subscribe just to planning and
budgeting and later a financials
and revenue management module.
PLATFORM-AS-A-SERVICE (PAAS)
WHAT IS IT?
Oracle Cloud is the industry’s most
holistic enterprise-grade cloud platform,
allowing business to extend and enhance
their environments by bringing cloud
technologies to existing applications,
or extending how their SaaS-based
applications are utilised.
VITAL STATISTICS: Oracle Cloud Platform supports
numerous open standards (SQL, HTML5,
REST, and more) open-source solutions
(such as Kubernetes, Hadoop, and Kafka)
and a wide variety of programming
languages, databases, and integration
frameworks.
UNIQUE ADVANTAGE: Extend Oracle SaaS applications with
the same development tools and APIs
that Oracle used to build them.
INFRASTRUCTURE-AS-A-SERVICE (IAAS)
WHAT IS IT?
Run your own operating system and
applications in Oracle Cloud – proven to
be the fastest cloud for HPC workloads.
Mix virtual machines with Bare Metal
Servers offering uncompromised
performance without a hypervisor.
VITAL STATISTICS: Oracle’s simple, aggressive pricing
strategy offers compute resources at
up to 70% less than major competitors.
UNIQUE ADVANTAGE: Oracle Cloud Bare Metal Servers
allow customers to shift their complete
corporate data, applications, and
infrastructure to Oracle Public Cloud
without any alterations whatsoever
(something that is just not possible
with AWS). Plus: Windows, Linux or
Oracle Solaris – flexibility other cloud
providers can’t provide.

04_THE TOP 10 BENEFITS OF ORACLE CLOUD
CORE TECHNOLOGIES ORACLE CUSTOMERS USE TODAY
Core business systems are not modified
lightly and migration of these systems
has to be exceptionally carefully
managed to minimise business risk.
If you’re running Oracle technology in
your business today, Oracle’s cloud runs
the same technology, making “lift-and-shift”
between on-premises and cloud easier
– but also enabling a gradual migration
of core business systems, leaving some
aspects on-premises and moving some
workloads to cloud.
This avoids the risks associated with
changing database architecture or API's,
which can trigger a domino effect of
unintended downstream consequences
in dependent systems.
#1 #2FLEXIBLE INTEGRATION
Oracle Cloud makes working with
cloud components easy by matching
on-premises technology and
architecture with the cloud. But that’s
just the first step for customers. Oracle
Cloud’s vertical integration offers
many more benefits that simply aren’t
available from other cloud providers.
For example, if extension of one of
Oracle’s SaaS applications is required,
the Oracle Platform-as-a-Service can
provide the underlying framework
for rapid low code development
utilising pre-built integration, common
development tools and uniform user
experience.
“THE SIMPLE FACT IS THERE IS NO BETTER
CLOUD PROVIDER TO RUN ORACLE
WORKLOADS THAN ORACLE ITSELF.”
And if total control is required, Oracle’s
infrastructure layer provides flexibility
to run Windows, Linux or Oracle Solaris
UNIX within the same cloud environment
– something that no other cloud provider
can offer. All three layers of the stack
support single sign on.

SECURE TO THE CORE
In Oracle Cloud, security is implemented
throughout the technology stack
running IaaS, PaaS and SaaS, with
features controlling network, hardware,
chips, operating systems, storage and
application layers.
Oracle’s end-to-end encryption is unique
in the industry: it covers data-at-rest, all
the way through to live virtual machines
running mission critical workloads being
transferred between physical hosts.4

COST EFFECTIVE
Oracle’s architecture allows it to
provide higher performance, at a lower
price, than its chief competitor, Amazon
Web Services. Oracle Founder and
Chief Technology Officer, Larry Ellison,
demonstrated live at OpenWorld 2017
how the same workloads running
on AWS are five to nine times more
expensive than on Oracle Autonomous
Database in Oracle Cloud.
More value is recouped by customers
by the minimal human labour costs
associated with Oracle Cloud.
Automated security patching, disaster
recovery and database management
are all included, freeing up existing IT
resources to perform more valuable
tasks, and removing the “unwanted but
necessary” cost of maintenance to the
business.
Oracle’s Software-as-a-Service
portfolio – spanning nearly 1000
applications – provides maximum cost
flexibility for Cloud customers, who
can activate just one application, or
even one component of an application,
at a time. (And, naturally, you’ll never pay
a version upgrade fee again when using
Cloud-hosted versions, which are always
up-to-date.)
Oracle’s innovative methodology for
cloud security moves defences outward
to the network edge at PoPs or peering
exchanges. This strategy works to block
malware and bots before they get to
Oracle data centres.
This is coupled with Oracle’s highly-
automated defence systems, which work
in conjunction with Oracle Autonomous
Database to automatically detect threats
and install rolling patches.
“The worst data threats in history
have occurred after a patch was made
available,” according to Larry Ellison.
“WE’RE SO CONFIDENT OF OUR COST
ADVANTAGES OVER AMAZON THAT
ORACLE WILL PROVIDE CUSTOMERS WITH
WRITTEN SERVICE-LEVEL AGREEMENTS
THAT GUARANTEE THAT MOVING TO
THE ORACLE CLOUD WILL CUT AMAZON
CUSTOMERS’ DATABASE BILLS IN HALF.”
LARRY ELLISON, ORACLE FOUNDER AND CHIEF TECHNOLOGY OFFICER
12
THE ORACLE CLOUD ADVANTAGE
ORACLE MISSION CRITICAL RELIABILITY
Oracle guarantees “four nines” –
99.99% – availability for IaaS and
PaaS⁵. Compared to a vendor
offering only 99.9% availability,
that extra digit is the difference
between less than five minutes
a month of system unavailability
and over 40 minutes. Oracle’s
Autonomous Database takes that
service level even further, offering
an unmatched 99.995% reliability
and availability – less than 2.5
minutes unavailability per month.
Oracle Cloud Infrastructure
is designed to give business
direct control over their resources,
ensuring consistency normally
expected from on-premises
data centres.
FAST
Oracle’s access and control of
custom silicon chips, the hardware
platform, the database and the
applications means it can remove
overheads and bottlenecks at all
points in the stack, an advantage
competitors simply cannot match.
Oracle Cloud’s clear speed
advantage is documented in
independent testing published
by Accenture.
“The tests clearly showed that the
Oracle Cloud options provided
the high levels of performance
that enterprise solutions require.
Overall, the Oracle Cloud solutions
delivered up to 3.4 times the
performance of a similar IaaS
solution on the other cloud when
running the same workloads on
like-for-like configurations.”7
INTELLIGENT AUTONOMOUS
Oracle’s Autonomous Database
Cloud leads the world in minimising
human management. It automatically
upgrades, patches and tunes itself
while running, with no downtime at all
required for maintenance. The artificial
intelligence that drives it automatically
compresses, caches and indexes the
database, allowing it to guarantee
99.995% reliability and availability.
This “self-driving” approach is
progressively being built deeply
into the Oracle Cloud stack, with
machine learning-driven user
and entity behaviour analytics to
automatically isolate and eliminate
suspicious and malicious users,
automated code generation for
application development, automated
encryption and patching, and
dozens of other AI and ML-driven
automations. This minimises
maintenance overheads whilst
simultaneously increasing security.

THE ORACLE CLOUD ADVANTAGE
LARGE AUSTRALIAN FOOTPRINT
Oracle Cloud’s data centre is
fully operational in Australia.
It joins Oracle’s existing data
centres in EMEA, the Americas
and Asia, giving Oracle Cloud
customers global reach with
remarkably low latency between
regions, and to the end user.
Oracle’s Australian region data
centres enable customers to
deploy both Oracle and non-
Oracle workloads on the cloud,
while delivering the advantages
of lower latency and local data
residency.
LICENSING SIMPLICITY
Oracle customers with on-
premises licences can simply
move them to Oracle PaaS
offerings, including Oracle
database, middleware and
analytics, and get significantly
reduced prices on the
corresponding PaaS offerings.
This gives corporate customers
more flexibility in deploying
both to cloud and on-premises
technologies, and protects
previous investments.
And, of course, using Oracle’s
technology in the cloud, there’s
no complexity around complying
with licensing – everything
is managed and audited
automatically for you.

THE ORACLE CLOUD ADVANTAGE
CLOUD 2.0: ORACLE’S INVESTMENT IN NEXT GENERATION
Oracle has been building all its
technologies for the last decade
to be cloud ready. Its database and
server technologies already power
many of the world’s most secure,
robust and dynamic environments.
That’s why Oracle has been able
to go to market with Oracle Cloud
in such an apparently short space
of time.
However, as a relatively recent
entrant into the public cloud
market, Oracle has had the
advantage of hiring the top
talent and taking industry best
practice into its architecture from
the outset, rather than having
to experiment and fix missteps
later. Former Google App Engine
Exec, Peter S. Magnusson, led the
establishment of Oracle Cloud.
Former AWS Star Engineer, Clay
Magouyrk, is now Oracle Cloud
Infrastructure, Senior Vice-
President. They are just
two of the thousands of people
who have chosen to move to
Oracle to build the future of Cloud.
#10BREAKTHROUGH DESIGN
Rather than having engineering
expertise tied up in managing
sprawling legacy cloud
infrastructure, Oracle has moved
on to defining the next generation
of cloud: what it calls Oracle
Cloud Infrastructure 2.0 (OCI).
It’s not hyperbolic to say that this
generation 2.0 cloud data centre
architecture is groundbreaking.
The new architecture is highly
fault-tolerant, secure and fast.
The design is elegant in its
simplicity: each Oracle Cloud
data centre forms an “availability
domain”. Three of them are
clustered in relatively close
geographic proximity and linked
on an extremely high-speed, fully
encrypted, point-to-point network
link, forming a “region” or “zone”.
“WE PUT THEM
CLOSE TOGETHER,
WE INTERCONNECT
THEM WITH A FIBRE
OPTIC RING, AND WE
DUPLICATE THE DATA,
OR ‘TRIPLICATE’ THE
DATA IN ALL OF THE
AVAILABILITY ZONES.”
LARRY ELLISON, ORACLE FOUNDER
AND CHIEF TECHNOLOGY OFFICER
15
THE ORACLE CLOUD ADVANTAGE
Inside a region, data moves at a
staggering 1Tbps with sub 1ms latency.
This phenomenal speed allows powered-
on virtual machines to be ported live
between data centre while continuing to
run, with full encryption on the wire.
This level of performance allows
clients’ applications to be tolerant to
geographical infrastructure failures –
the application instantly fails over to
another region where the data has been
constantly replicated. Regions include
Australia, New Zealand, Asia-Pacific,
Singapore, East and West Coast US,
North and South UK, EU, Germany and
the Middle East.
FROM BARE METAL TO DOCKER AND EVERY VM IN-BETWEEN
For the most demanding workloads
requiring maximum compute power,
Oracle Cloud Infrastructure 2.0 offers
bare-metal servers (with one-click
installation and configuration of Oracle
Database, RAC and Exadata) and a
Docker-based container service (Oracle
Container Cloud Service).

They can be run alongside more
traditional virtual machines and

software, servers and storage,
configured to current best practices
by Oracle, providing an optimal
solution for all database workloads).
