Dear Editor—

I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, "If you see it in The Sun, it's

so." Please tell me the truth, is there a Santa Claus?

Virginia O'Hanlon

115 West Ninety Fifth Street

Virginia, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do

not believe except they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds.

All minds, Virginia, whether they be men's or children's, are little. In this great universe of ours, man is a

mere insect, an ant, in his intellect as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the

intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and

you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the

world if there were no Santa Claus! It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias. There would be no

childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence.

We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The external light with which childhood fills the

world would be extinguished.

Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies. You might get your papa to hire men to

watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if you did not see Santa Claus

coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa

Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see

fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that's no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive

or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.

You tear apart the baby's rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen

world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived

could tear apart. Only faith, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the su-

pernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, Virginia, in all this world there is nothing else real and

abiding.

No Santa Claus! Thank God! He lives and lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay 10 times

10,000 years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

Yes, Virginia ...

Don’t forget to

come celebrate

the Holiday

Party Dec. 20.

Best of the holidays to all our PSDC family!! Please get in the spirit and join us at our annual Club Party - per Paul

Johnson’s recent email and the party announcement elsewhere in this Commander. Our Club is about people more

than cars and we need your active involvement. That includes both attendance at the party and considering helping

organize. Terry McDaniels has stepped up to take over as Activities Director when Paul retires at the party; we have

two other open positions needing your consideration.

The new and improved PSDC bylaws were approved - both by our chapter votes and by the national SDC

Board. [Future bylaw changes will no longer need approval of the National Board.] Per the new bylaws, we need a

volunteer to become our recruiting director; please consider doing a term as such and leading our plans for the fu-

ture. The (new) position is mostly whatever you might like to make it.

Second, with the retiring of our PSDC secretary, Steve Walter, we are looking for a volunteer to fill that post at least

until the elections in December 2016. Please consider filling that role; call Steve if you want particulars of what that

entails.

If you can help in either function, please give me a call [703-979-4763].

TECH TIP by Ed Lemanski

HISTORIAN CORNER By Ed Lemanski

Early 1990's - SDC Potomac Picnic at White Oak MD

LOOKING BACK 20 YEARS - In memory of "Del

Sasse" Col. Emil Delbert Sasse, July 1914 - Oct 1995

This was the most recent photo (Oct 1989) that I have

of Del Sasse. It was taken at the White Oak facility in

Maryland. We were at a Potomac Chapter sponsored

indoor picnic. Del was noted for leadership, friendship

and assistance, by Bob Johannessen, the then Secretary-

Treasurer, who submitted a write-up for the December

1995 Commander.

I remember Del as the person who would call you up

the night before an event to encourage you attend-

ing. Of note, he contacted and was responsible for the

Laurel Lions Club adding three Avanti classes to the

annual Laurel Auto Show held at the race-course. One

year, when many of us flew to Las Vegas for the Inter-

national SDC meet, Del and Virginia drove their 1963

Turquoise Avanti cross country. Down to earth, he al-

ways said "I don't buy green bananas" but at the same

time committed his Avanti for an 18 Month restoration.

Del prepared the AOAI newsletters for his chap-

ter. He would even hand write the articles when he

couldn't get a newsletter editor to prepare an issue on a

computer. I smile inside whenever I come across one

of his hand written classics. This man made a differ-

ence.

No Tech Tips for the month of

December

Karen,

Doug Hodak here emailing from work. As you

might remember, I sold my 1950 Starlight

Coupe to a couple in the north suburbs two

years ago. They recently emailed making me

aware of an article that just ran in the (online

version) Wall Street Journal which featured the

car (which I named Hank).

I though the Blackhawk members might find it

interesting to see a Studebaker highlighted

nationally again. If you see fit, please forward

this email to the distribution list with the link

Fire destroys cars at America’s Packard Museum secondary facility http://blog.hemmings.com/index.php/2015/11/18/fire-destroys-cars-at-americas-packard-museum-

secondary-facility/

Wayne Carini has chased more exotic cars than anyone else.

He has finally found a “Keeper”. A pristine 54 Studebaker

Commander Starliner. The car is absolutely perfect with a

little over 7,000 original miles. The original owner would not

let anyone near the car if they had buttons, zippers or

fasteners on their clothing. No shoes were allowed in the car.

He was an absolute perfectionist! He only drove it on short

distances, mainly to have it inspected each year. It was kept

under blankets and covers in a dust proofed garage. The

car is absolutely perfect and original. Carini just won the

preservation class at the Boca Raton Concours. He vows

never to sell it although he has had many offers.

(This is an amazing story about a Studebaker)
