When Michael and Sarah Oxner married 12 years ago, they chose to make Searcy their home. The town was a good mid-point between Sarah’s job in Little Rock and Michael’s farm in Newport at the time, and they felt it would be a good place to raise a family someday.

After a few years of commuting, the Oxners were blessed to discover that Sarah was pregnant with their first child.

“Naturally, we planned to have her in Little Rock, since I had used the same doctor there for years,” Sarah stated. “I had never been to White County Medical Center since we’d lived in Searcy, and I did not intend to have my baby there. We thought if there was a complication with the delivery, we would want to have the best care possible and assumed that would be in Little Rock.”

Those plans changed when Sarah fell ill 33½ weeks into her pregnancy. “Up until that day, I had experienced the perfect pregnancy,” she recalled. “When I woke up the morning of August 23, 2004, I was sicker than I had ever been in my life. I called my doctor in Little Rock, and the nurse told me I likely had a stomach virus and suggested taking an antacid and acetaminophen. That’s what I did and went to bed for the day.”

The following 24 hours were the most frightening time in the Oxners’ lives. Michael woke up in the middle of the night to find Sarah in seizures. She was unresponsive and the blood from biting her tongue covered her pillow. In a panic, Michael dialed 911. When the ambulance arrived, he pleaded with the driver to take Sarah to her doctor in Little Rock. happen every day I was a member of a family! When Michael and I had our next two children, Laura Grace and Paten, we did not consider having them anywhere other than White County Medical Center.”

In 2011, Sarah was honored to be asked to serve on the White County Medical Foundation Pillars of Health Committee. “I could not answer ‘yes’ fast enough,” she said.

“I was so pleased about the opportunity to serve the hospital that had saved our lives.”

“Our experience at WCMC was absolutely over the top. We will be forever grateful to Dr. Jim Citty, Dr. Bill Williams, Dr. J.L. Stinnett and all the other doctors and nurses who cared for us. Serving the Foundation is my chance to publicly and humbly thank the hospital.”

“When the ‘Miracles Happen Every Day’ campaign was announced, I knew my calling to the Pillars of Health committee was not by accident,” she added. “I am excited to help the Foundation raise funds to make several wonderful improvements to the New Life Center so that expectant mothers will continue to receive the same great care I did.”

“Raising funds for the New Life Center is deeply personal to me. It is my great desire for our hospital to be able to offer every Mom the best experience possible. To complement the caring and compassionate team of doctors, nurses and staff, I want to see the New Life Center have the most advanced technology available in labor and delivery care for mothers and their newborns. Also, plans for renovations to the labor, delivery, recovery and postpartum suites will include even more comforts of home and will be a wonderful added bonus for families to celebrate and visit in a welcoming environment.”

“I have a very special place in my heart for Moms and their newborns, especially premature babies,” Sarah added.

“Miracles really do happen every day at White County Medical Center. My daughter and I are living proof.”

We have entered 2014 with a lot of energy, excitement and enthusiasm for our Miracles Happen Every Day Campaign. You can see in this edition of our newsletter, The Connection, we’ve got a lot of great things happening with the White County Medical Foundation.

We are so honored that our volunteers/donors Michael and Sarah Oxner have shared their personal experience with us in this issue of The Connection. The White County Medical Foundation has recently welcomed a new board member, recognized our current business partners, and honored Dr. Jim Citty with his delivering of nearly 10,000 babies.

I would also like to introduce to you the great team we’ve assembled in our Foundation office. I want to welcome them and share with you the areas they focus on. Anna Overbay is an Event/Foundation Specialist. She plays a major role in our associate giving club: The PEP Club and does an outstanding job with our events for White County Medical Center and the Foundation. Natalie Horton joined our team last August as a Foundation Specialist. She is working with our Annual Gifts Committee and our Business and Industry Committees – we’re proud to have her on our team. Allison Galbreath recently joined our team as an Administrative Assistant for our WCMC South Campus – and she is very important to the Foundation. She is key for our data entry for gifts and working with all of our committees.

If any member of our team can ever assist you in any way, please contact us at: 501-278-3186 or [email protected]. Or drop by to see us; our Foundation offices are located on the WCMC South Campus on Main Street.

Thanks for your support of the White County Medical Foundation! We are looking forward to a great year!

Searcy Mayor David Morris recently presented Family Physician Jim Citty, M.D., with a Key to the City of Searcy and proclaimed January 24, 2014, as Dr. Jim Citty Day. As Mayor Morris read the proclamation, he stated that the honor was designed to “recognize, reward and celebrate the many years of service and valuable contributions Dr. Jim Citty has made to our community.” Dr. Citty’s medical career spans more than five decades. He and his wife Maralyn, along with their four children, made Searcy their home in 1975. Of the nearly 10,000 babies Dr. Citty has delivered in that time, he is most proud that he was able to deliver six of his nine grandchildren.

“The ceremony was a surprise; it was truly a humbling experience,” Dr. Citty said. “I have not, in my opinion, deserved the awards I’ve received over the years; however, the singular honor of receiving this Key to the City is at the top of the list.”

“What I have done is because I love it,” he added. “Medicine has never been a job to me. I have been blessed to be able to learn and participate in, and it is a service I can do for other people – it is a way to help others.”

“In life, you have to focus on what you do best, and what I do best is interact one-on-one with patients. Whether that patient is an expectant mother, a grandmother with congestive heart failure or a sick child, being able to communicate with them and address their health concern is my strength.”

According to White County Medical Foundation Executive Director Cassandra Feltrop, Daniels’ involvement in the Foundation has spanned the past five years as a member of the Planned Gifts Committee, which she currently chairs. “We are glad to have Amy join our Foundation’s Board of Directors,” Feltrop said. “She is highly knowledgeable about our Foundation’s mission and was very active in garnering support in building the Cancer Center of Excellence in 2012. “I am excited to join the Foundation’s Board of Directors,” Daniels said. “This is a tremendous opportunity to broaden my philanthropic involvement in our community and raise awareness about the Foundation, its mission and importance in our community.”

“As the fund-raising arm of hospitals, I truly believe that Foundations are the driving force of excellence in offering high-quality patient care,” she added. “Raising the level of care and services often occurs through construction projects and technological advancements, which why the mission of the White County Medical Foundation is so important. Our fund-raising efforts improve the hospital and, more importantly, benefit the patients we serve.”

“I look forward to broadening my expertise as a member of the Foundation Board and serving in this new role,” Daniels said. “The sky is the limit for our Foundation right now as we reach residents of Searcy and the surrounding communities.”
