How to access the Library online catalogue

You can access the Library catalogue (Heritage catalogue) via the Library website at: http://library.dbs.ieThere are various ways of accessing it:

How to do a search?

You can search the Library catalogue via the:1. ‘Simple Search’ option: type in your search terms in the

search field and send your search

2. ‘Guided Search’ option: use one of the various fields (all fields, author, title, etc.) to make your search as precise as possible

3. ‘Advanced Search option’: select the field and the type of media among which you would like your search to be done

How to do a search?Enter the word or phrase you are looking for in the search box. This could be, for example, some words from the title, an author surname, the publisher name, or various other pieces of information about the book/DVD you’re looking for. Press enter or click ‘Search’ to display the results.

TIP:If you cannot find what you are looking for try similar terms e.g. if you’re looking for something relating to film you can also try searching for cinema.

Use the words AND, OR, and AND NOT (aka ‘Boolean operators’) to include or exclude other termsfrom the search.If you are not sure of the spelling of a word or wish to search on variations of a word, enter the sign ? in place of an individual letter, or the star sign * in place of a string of letters.For example:- ARM? will find 'Arms' and 'Army‘- NURS* will find 'Nurse', 'Nurses', 'Nursing' and 'Nursery‘- M*D*VAL will find 'Medieval' and its alternative spellings, e.g. 'Mediaeval‘.

Results display

If more than one result is found, the catalogue will display a list (or ‘Summary’) of results.Double click on a title to view the full details including edition, year of publication, number of reservers and due dates of items on loan.

TIP: Use the arrows at the top righthand corner of the detailed record tomove between different results if thereis more than one results.

TIP: Use the ‘Search’ icon on theleft of the screen at any time toreturn to the Search screen.

TIP: HARVARD REFERENCINGUse the ‘Citation’ to get thereference of your book in theHarvard Referencing style.

If you have a smart phone, take a picture of the Quick Respond Code (QRCode) which contains all the book/DVD information (for more details on this, check our ‘QR code’ guide)

If you are logged in onto your own account (see Getting Started Guide - ‘Check your library account online’) you can use the followingoptions while doing your searches on the catalogue:- Favourite searches - you can save your favourite searches so that you are able to run them again by simply clicking a link.- Search history - you can view a list of your most recent searches, and re-run them by simply clicking a link. You must log in to access

this feature.- Star ratings - This feature allows you to rate items using a star rating system.- Reader reviews - This feature allows you to submit reviews for books and other catalogue items. These reviews are moderated.- Reader preferences - you can set your own default Enquiry settings such as the default display format, font size and whether

Boolean icons are displayed.- Google Preview - Catalogue records contain links to Google Book Search previews (where these are available). The preview is then

available when the catalogue record is viewed using the display format ‘Cover image with dynamically generated information’- Social bookmarking sites – the search screens contain links to the social bookmarking sites Delicious, Digg, Reddit, Facebook and

StumbleUpon.- ZOTERO reference import – check our ZOTERO guide to see in full details how you can import resources found on the catalogue

directly to your ZOTERO reference management account.
