In fi elds ranging from the sciences to government to management and fi nance and beyond, statistics are an increasingly vital decision-making tool. For professionals who are well prepared for their current fi elds but who lack the data science skills they need to advance, the Master’s in Statistical Practice at Boston University can deliver the knowledge and real-world understanding employers demand.
The MS in Statistical Practice (MSSP) is an eight-course program that can be completed in one year. It’s focused, practical and ideal for students who plan to launch immediately into fi elds in industry, government, nonprofi ts and other highly collaborative environments—here in Boston or anywhere else.
The Master’s in Statistical Practice program is designed to lay a foundation in statistical methods and applications for individuals with backgrounds in fi elds like biology, psychology, economics, management and engineering whose jobs demand a more extensive level of statistics training than they may have received as undergraduates.
Mathematics Boot CampIf you’re admitted, you’ll have the opportunity to attend a math “boot camp” in the weeks before the program begins to review and extend your mathematical knowledge. This includes reviewing relevant aspects of Calculus I & II and basic programming, as well as an introduction to key topics from multivariable calculus to linear algebra.
Core coursesIn the program’s core courses, you’ll master the fundamentals of statistical methods and analysis, including probability, mathematical statistics and their relation to statistical methods including linear models and time series.
GRS MA 681 Accelerated Introduction to Statistical Methods for Quantitative Research
GRS MA 684 Applied Multiple Regression & Multivariable Methods
GRS MA 685 Advanced Topics in Applied Statistical Analysis
An accelerated, real-world approach to statistical practice
ElectivesYou’ll choose three electives: one advanced statistics elective and a two-semester elective sequence from either standard statistics off erings or from complementary disciplines. Options include:
• Bioinformatics
• Biostatistics
• Computational Neuroscience
• Computer Science
• Mathematics
PracticumAll MSSP students are required to take a two-semester practicum course to develop the soft skills required for doing statistics in practice. During the practicum, you’ll perform statistical consulting for University clients and complete modules on speaking, writing, software and programming, and data analysis.
