FROM YOUR PASTOR’S

HEARTJuly is here. Our year is either half gone or half left

depending on your point of view. The Fourth of July always brings many friends and family home for the big Alderson celebration, which is 50 years old this year. My how time flies. May we have a blessed celebration as we remember those who worked and fought to make our country free. Of course, freedom is never free. And that applies to our faith as well. We are made free from sin at

a great price. Jesus, God’s son, paid the price willingly. May we honor

His sacrifice by telling others about Him through the words and deeds of our lives.Thank You! – You all keep a secret well. I was truly surprised and blessed by the luncheon after church on June 12th in honor of completing my PhD. I am glad to be free from the demands of being a student after six years of work. Thank you also for the gift certificate to the General Lewis Inn. I appreciate all the support and love that you give to me and my family.VBS – This year our VBS Director is Amanda Bowden. I remember not too many years back when she was a participant. We are thankful for her willing leadership in planning and conducting this year’s Bible school. Please be in prayer for her and her team as they prepare for this important week in July.Amy’s House – Please be in prayer for this important ministry action by our local churches and community. Please take time to learn more by reading the article in this newsletter or the brochure available in the back of the sanctuary. Consider how you may be a part of this local missions activity.

Avoiding Temptation 101

The August Men’s Community Prayer Breakfast will be Saturday, August 6th at 8am at River of Life Church of God.

A mother and her young son were walking through a mall when she suggested they go into a toy store to buy a birthday gift for the boy’s friend.

“No, Mommy, I can’t go in there,” he protested. “I’ll see something I want and can’t have. Then I’ll cry. So it’s just better if I don’t go in.”

Temptation wasn’t yet in this boy’s vocabulary, but he sure knew what it was. More impressively, he knew what to do about it.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL WEEK

Follow the boy’s example: Don’t put yourself into vulnerable positions in the first place. For “The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak” (Matthew 26:41b, NRSV).

Our Finance Team meets on a regular basis to monitor our church budget and spending. Thank you for your regular tithes and special offerings. Each month, we want to present an overview of where we are financially.

General Fund for the Month Ended May 31, 2011:Beginning Balance $ 9,421.44 + Total Income $ 11,247.39 − Total Expenses $ 9,888.19Ending Balance $ 10,781.88

As reported last month, we have expended $8,061 on extraordinary maintenance needs (i.e., boiler repairs, elevator repairs, and external lighting). We have received some contributions to help rebuild our Building Fund. However, we need your continued support of the Building Fund to provide for future needs.Your support of our missions offerings has been outstanding again this year. We have increased our giving over last year for both offerings taken so far. Our America for Christ goal was $2,011 and we received $2,012. Our One Great Hour of Sharing (OGHS) goal was $3,500. Below is a summary of your giving to OGHS as of May 31, 2011. We are less than $100 from our goal! One Great Hour of Sharing – Japan $ 1,923.71One Great Hour of Sharing – Southern States $ 100.00One Great Hour of Sharing – Mississippi $ 100.00One Great Hour of Sharing – undesignated $ 1,277.20 OGHS TOTAL $ 3,400.91

Thank you for giving to our Building Fund and missions offerings—over and above your regular tithe. We faithfully continue to care for our church facility and to reach out to the world with the good news of Jesus

Christ.Amy’s House

Amy Calendine is an adorable young lady who was born with Leukodystrophy. She was not expected to

live very long; however, she is now twenty-six years old and is a graduate of Hinton High School. Amy and her mother, Diane Calendine, live in a house trailer in the Pence Springs area of Summers County. Their home is in a bad state of repair. The Alderson Ministerial Association believes they should have a better place to live and is willing to invest a considerable amount of funds and labor to make this happen. In addition to the funds we have available, we will need help from the surrounding area. We believe if the information gets out we will find many people and organizations who are able and willing to help build Amy’s house. We believe this is what God wants us to do. Therefore we have begun construction. At this time we have done the site preparation and laid the foundation. By the time you receive this newsletter, our Summer Work Team from Southbury, CT should have Amy’s house under roof and dried in. However, there will still be much finish work required before Amy’s house will be completed. There are several ways you can be involved:

1. Make a personal donation of money or work time. You can give through OGBC by designating your gift for “Amy’s House.”

2. Hold a fund raising event, bake sale, dinner, etc.3. Participate in an upcoming OGBC work day on Amy’s house.4. Prepare a meal for one of the work teams.5. Inform others in the community about Amy’s house. There are

brochures available at the back the sanctuary.6. Provide an item(s) from our supply needs list.

The Old Testament Lives

Please be in prayer for this project as our community works together to meet this need. Jesus said, “. . . whenever you did this for one of the least important of these members of my family, you did it for me!” (Mt 25:40b, GNT).

Summer Sunday Night Concerts on the Lawn

We are once again sponsoring our popular Summer Sunday Night Concerts on the Lawn. All concerts begin at 7:00pm on the lawn across the street from the church. Bring a lawn chair and a friend. All concerts are free and open to anyone in the community. A love offering will be received to support the ministries of the guest artist(s). In case of inclement weather, the concert will be held inside the church. Below is our remaining schedule. If you have questions, please contact Donna Simms, our Concert Coordinator, or Pastor Bill.

This month Pastor Bill launches a new Wednesday evening Bible study series: The Old Testament Lives. This study will survey the theology of the Old Testament as we apply it for living today. We begin by discussing general topics such as Old Testament history, geography, and canon. Then we will begin a specific examination of each of the thirty-nine books that comprise the Old Testament. Our lessons will focus attention on understanding and applying God’s word in the Old Testament to New Testament living today.
