By Wes McNair, Commodore

A great year for MRSA is coming to a close, an especially enjoyable one for me to have served as your Commodore. What a fine privilege it is to be able to observe the smooth operations of our group’s many endeavors. It takes a lot of work, not by the Commodore thank goodness, but by so many valuable members. I want to take this opportunity to call your attention to just some of our unsung heroes. Where better to start than right here in the Old Man, which Bert Polk so diligently and creatively brings to life each and every month? Getting articles from the rest of us is just the beginning of the duties Bert happily endures, all to keep us up to date. Thanks, Bert! And thanks

to Carolyn and George Stamps. Did you know they handle the mailing of the Old Man month in and month out? Thank goodness for self-adhesive Stamps. Another way we know what happens when, and how, is through the Red Book, edited and published again this year by Kathy Dougan. She makes it look easy, which perhaps we can attribute to the skills she acquired in successfully parenting multiples. Or herding cats, in our case. And in the communications vein, I can’t leave out Webmaster Mike Mullarky. Thanks Mike, for all you do, from getting the Wednesday night scores posted to managing our email. Mike is also a steady voice for us as PHRF delegate, official race scorer, and participates in most BOG meetings, always ready to offer a helpful perspective. Racing is a big part of what we do, and ‘it takes a village’ to bring all of the elements off successfully. Our racing members have been blessed by extraordinarily broad participation in race management. Roger Bartholomee had a busy year keeping our river marks in shape. generation of potential members. Debbie Lund handled the Ships’ Store again, so capably. Buy her out at the next opportunity, and maybe we can eliminate membership dues. Joe Tierney, take a bow please for helping out so much with the many details of assembling and supporting our junior training program. This job takes a lot of patience and more than a little diplomacy; no one could do it better. And thanks to Rich Hughes for not completely removing himself from the program. He offered essential wisdom and assistance, always with a smile. Always ready to help out with any aspect of MRSA operations, thanks to Ed Poe for liaison work with our Grachur partners, among other valuable contributions. And to the parents out there, and other vital camp volunteers, your day(s) should have convinced you of how much we needed you. It is appreciated. Peggy Poe is certainly one of our heroes. As our membership chair, she is often the first impression our members have of our group. And a good one she is too, always friendly and helpful, never losing track once she begins shepherding them. Peggy gets our Daymark out also, keeping our events in front of both prospective and current members, and she is one of our most active leaders in BOG discussions, racing socials, and cruising events, to boot. In her free time (?) she has written several articles for the Spinsheet featuring Magothy events. Finally, I want to recognize Jon Mullarky for serving as our CBYCA representative, even while doing such a fine job in his many other duties. There are certainly many other volunteer efforts worth recognition, and I apologize where I’ve failed to mention yours; I just hope you all know the difference you made. And I haven’t even gotten to our fine team of BOG members this year, but Bert is giving me the hook. Well, let’s give them the spotlight they deserve at the Commodore’s Ball. See you there! Thanks to you all for making this such a memorable year. Bon Voyage!

The speakers will be joined by Jim Rogers and David Askew for a panel discussion and lively Q & A session. Once again MRSA has reserved a room at the Waterfront Marriot for your viewing (and snacking) pleasure. Please bring a finger-food appetizer and your favorite hot toddy to share at the MRSA Suite. Come early and avoid (some of) the parking hassle. MRSA does not have an entry this year but you still need to come to see the amazing light shows on the water and enjoy this Festive Annapolis Tradition.

We are all caught up for now since November was a bit slow – except for what we reported in the last, mid-month addition of this fine periodical publication. – ED

Jack's Favorite has been launched! By Thunder!

Al Picardi, MRSA member for 15+ years, is pleased to announce the launching of Jack's Favorite, a historical novel about the unsung heros of the American Revolution - smugglers, called "pirates" by the Royal Navy.

Picture yourself in a midnight backwater rendezvous, desperate sea chases, smuggler’s coves & cathouses, press gangs and waterfront riots: it's 1770 and rebellion smolders. Once a gentleman's sport, smuggling has become a necessity. The stakes are high; capture by the Royal Navy means forfeiture of ship and fortune. Smuggling Captain Nathaniel Harte joins high-spirited Anne Easton for a daring rescue attempt in Jamaica, where the pirate Deadlight Helms, heroic Windward Maroons, a foul-mouthed parrot, Obeah magic, a corrupt governor, and the relentless Royal Navy make for swashbuckling adventure.

The first shots of the American Revolution were fired by the British Navy at colonial smugglers, long before the skirmishes at Lexington and Concord.

In 1763 the instructions to Captain Walter Stirling of the Royal Navy frigate Rainbow, on station from Cape Henlopen to Cape Henry, were to guard the coast and secure trade against "pirates and others." Since there had been precious few "pirates" in American waters since 1724, this meant the Royal Navy had open season on colonial smugglers.

"This insurrection is composed of great numbers of Sailors headed by Captains of Privateers, and other Ships; Inhabitants of the Town joined by many who come in from the Neighboring Country and Provinces..." – General Gage, dispatch to London from New York, November 4, 1765

A quick reviewer’s comment: “This story of a Chesapeake Sea Captain operating under the nose, and sometimes under the guns of the British Navy, is a great story that is both historically and technically accurate. Great read; couldn't put it down and can't wait for the next part of this tale!” - Chesapeake Bay sailor.

Jack's Favorite is now officially launched, and can be had directly from https://www.createspace.com/3449810. The website for Jack's Favorite is also up (albeit still on the ways) and will direct you to the same site for a copy: www.jacksfavorite.webs.com. Also available on Kindle: Kindle E-book http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0046LUZUE. And now, and Old Man exclusive from the Author:

“We were (and still are) members of the MRSA for 15+ years, cruising and hosting cruises aboard Niche, a Catalina/Morgan 454. We hosted several memorable Goose Cruises with pirates and jellyfish swarming the decks. Many people remember our double-ended rowing dory we used as a tender (my design and build). Niche is now for sale, and we are temporarily inactive members.

“I have been a student of boat design, American small craft and sailing ships, and a boat builder for over 40 years, and have designed and built many small craft. As I learned the history of the development of American sailing vessels, I found the stories behind the ships fascinating. I did years of research into the colonial era, not only the ships; but the details of the everyday life of the common people. Those are the characters in my historical novel Jack's Favorite; everyday common folk who did extraordinary things in the course of their lives.

“Of course learning to write a good story is a craft in itself. After years of consulting for the World Bank and writing environmental reports, I figured I should strike out on my own to combine writing with my avocation.

“I had a lot of help along the way, not the least of which came from MRSA members. My sailing and well-read friends Chuck Beck and Jeff Fones gave much of their time and provided wonderful advice.

Commodore’s Ball and Election of Officers RACERS!! Please note carefully that this Thursday, December 2, starting at 6:30 PM, or 1830 (whichever come first), there is a membership meeting and election of officers for the coming year in our Magothy River Sailing Association. In years past, racers were very active participants in this gathering. Lately - - - not so much. But we racers should play a big part in the election since we are probably the largest and most active sub-group in MRSA. This year’s meeting is at Podickory – right on the Bay, overlooking Baltimore Light, a racing landmark (watermark?). To either side is our river to the West and Sandy Point Light and the Bay Bridge to the East. Call your crew (or your favorite skipper) and car pool to the meeting. Prizes awarded to the best racing crew. And then there is the Commodore’s Ball at the Gibson Island Club on January 22. Another chance to highlight the racing set. Plan on making it a crew party – maybe with a few gag gifts or sea stories or maybe the best moments in racing 2010 (or maybe the

funniest). It is a fast crowd with great food, an open bar (open for you to order and slap leather), and even a DJ with music for whatever your mood. Join the annual “dress-ups” party at GIYC, and have a Happy New Year! (Joe Berchielli is the Race Committee Chair. He did not have anything to do with the above commercial, but he would love to see you all at both events! Me too. - ED) See also the announcement about the AYC Annapolis to Newport Race Seminar on Tuesday, December 7, 2010. Great topic, great speakers, great venue.
