Department of Family Medicine Faculty Continue to Make Great Progress on “The Patient-Centered Medical Home: Adaptable Cur-riculum Models, Instructional Modules, and Implementation Plans” Grant Project Department of Family Medicine faculty continue to make great progress on their 5-year, $1 million Health Resources and Services Administration grant project titled, “The Patient-Centered Medical Home: Adaptable Curriculum Models, Instructional Modules, and Implementation Plans.” Drs. Holly Cronau, Doug Post, Milisa Rizer, Alison Macerollo, Randy Wexler and Doug Danforth and Ms. Jennifer Lehman have worked together on all grant project-related activities. There are four separate initiatives within this grant, with one component directly geared toward medical student learners. Development of core lecture material has begun with Dr. Randy Wexler leading discussions and interactions with groups of third-year medical students. Small group teaching about the patient centered medi-cal home (PCMH) is being pilot tested for future inclusion within the new Lead.Serve.Inspire.(LSI) medical school curriculum. Patient case development—focusing on the top family medicine diagnoses—is currently underway. Detailed pa-tient cases, with embedded technology, are being developed with use of avatars for patient interviewing and animation video to model and demonstrate an ideal PCMH.

Family Medicine Faculty Continue to Work on the Lead.Serve.Inspire. (LSI) Curriculum

As part of the College’s new LSI curriculum, Department of Family Medicine faculty are partnering with the Department of Pediatrics and the Department of Internal Medi-cine to design a 16-week curriculum for Part 2 of the new curriculum. The Part 2 “curricular ring” is entitled “Patients Within Populations.” Medical students will have one week of introductory small groups, workshops, didactics, and e-learning to pre-pare for their clinical experiences. This will be followed by inpatient and outpatient pediatrics, family medicine, and a selective experience in various community settings. There will be an assessment week for administration of shelf examinations, standard-ized patient interaction, project completion, and other assessments as needed. Dr. Holly Cronau is leading the Ring Task Force with Drs. Leon McDougle, Allison Macerollo and Laurie Belknap providing support from the Department.

MidOhio Foodbank Poverty Simulation a Success

On Wednesday May 1st, physicians and staff from Care-Point East and Rardin Family Practices traveled to the Mid-Ohio Food Bank to participate in a poverty simulation, run by staff and volunteers at the food bank. As a part of the simulation, our participants were divided into families, each facing various socio-economic hardships. CarePoint East and Rardin Family Practice Managers Mary Elswick and

Becky Wilkins coordinated this event as an opportunity for both practices to gain a better awareness of the daily strug-gles faced by underprivileged individuals and families. After the simulation, Mary commented, “I really did not realize it could be a fulltime job for someone to try and find assistance they need to survive day to day…Let’s all continue to keep in mind what some of our patients go through just to survive.” Many participants were able to return to their practices with a new understanding on of our underserved patients. For our physicians and staff, the 3-hour experience of unemploy-ment, endless searches for financial aid and support, and the uncertainty of basic necessities ended at 4:00pm that day. For many of our patients, however, this daily reality is difficult to escape.
