From the Directors’ Box

Good afternoon, and a warm wel-come to our visitors and friendsfrom Merthyr. We extend our

hospitality to the officials, players, staffand supporters, hope you enjoy yourtime with us, and have a safe journeyhome afterwards.I’d also like to welcome today’s matchsponsors - Paul Arnold and StackhousePoland Ltd. Your support is most appre-ciatedAlthough we returned from Frome lastSaturday with a disappointing 1-0 de-feat, the Christmas & New Year periodwas good to the team and included ourfirst away win of the season at PooleTown of all places! However, it remainsvery tight in the bottom half - a couple ofback to back wins would see us movewell up the table, and so there is all toplay for in the 2nd half of the season. We always knew this league would betough, especially given our late entryinto the division. Even though, ofcourse, every club started the seasonon zero points, it’s always felt like we’vebeen playing catch up both in terms ofresults and recruitment - I don’t think wecan underestimate how tough it hasbeen for Matty.

Furthermore, Matty’s plans on the pitchcontinue to be tested with long termseason-ending injuries for Scott Arnold,Paddy Hester & Jack Lovell. As a result,Matty remains on the look out for a cou-ple of additions but, like the recent arriv-al of Carl Pettefer, he is keen to makethe right signing, not just any signing. From the Board of Directors’ perspec-tive, we’ll do what we can to accommo-date Matty, but as ever finances aretight and so it remains a bit of a jugglingact. That’s why the support of our sponsorssuch as Paul Arnold & Stackhouse Po-land Ltd today, is so important - thanksagain to Paul & Peter.Elsewhere you’ll probably have seen inthe Echo that planning was recentlygranted in favour of the developer WyattHomes for the redevelopment of ourground for housing which is a big stepin terms of our new ground aspirations. We are, of course, in the hands of thedeveloper in terms of timing etc., but weare meeting with Wyatt Homes soonand I will endeavour to provide a furtherupdate in a future programme so watchthis space! In the meantime, enjoy the game.

From the Dugout

Hello everyone, and welcome toour home league game vMerthyr. I would like to wel-

come the players, staff and support-ers of Merthyr to Wimborne for thegame this afternoon.Since my last notes against Farnbor-ough we have played 5 games in twoweeks which is a really tough sched-ule. Over those five games I was de-lighted with the way the players wentabout the games and to go 2 wins, 2draws and a defeat over a tough peri-od was a good return. We can feel hard done by in a coupleof the games, Dorchester away withthe ‘ghost goal’ by Burbs, which de-nied us all 3 points, and also theFrome game where a missed penaltyand then their deflected cross loopedinto the goal, in what was a toughgame on a poor surface. The Poole Town win was a great re-sult for everyone, it shows that if youstay determined and fight as a teamyou can get the rewards, and thatproved to be the case with the last 25minutes where we were as good as Ihave seen us this season.

It is now important that we try to getback on a run again after our Fromedisappointment and pick up some val-uable points to try and push us awayfrom the relegation zone. The table istight and will continue to be that wayfor a number of weeks now.Today’s game will be a tough affair, Ifelt Merthyr were one of the bestsides we played this season at theirplace, so we will have to be really fo-cused and continue our good homeform if we are to collect any pointstoday.I hope you all enjoy the game this af-ternoon, and wish you all a happynew year.

From the Dressing Room

Hi, and welcome to today’s returnleague game against Merthyr. The two clubs get on well so it’s

great that we’re in the same divisionagain. And I know many of you arelooking forward to meeting the lovelypeople from Merthyr again.I’m really disappointed that I won’t beplaying today. When I was a full-back Ihad some tough games trying to keepIan Traylor in check, so I was quite re-lieved to go central and have some bat-tles and banter with Ryan Prosser. In my last notes I mentioned that I waswaiting for the results of my scan. Well,I had some brilliant news which is that Idon’t need an operation on my knee. There’s a tear in the MCL but the other2 ligaments are in tact, just bruised andstrained. There are micro-fractures inthe tibia, but wearing a leg brace andusing crutches was the right thing to doand has prevented further damage, oth-erwise I’d have been well plastered! I’moptimistic that I’ll be able to resumework sometime next month.I saw that Tom Gardener of Tiverton, who has over 500 appearances andwas playing in the game when I injuredmy knee, broke his arm after 3 minuteslast Saturday. I got in touch with himand said that at least I lasted 9 minutes! It was strange not playing over theChristmas period. I enjoyed it, but youcan get sick of eating and drinking. It’sgood to get out there and play football.I was at the Dorchester game on theSaturday after Christmas. It was a clas-sic game of two halves. They werestrong in the first period but were waste-ful with their chances. In the second

half, although Gerard had to makesome good saves, we were on top. Themain talking point, of course, wasBurbs’ “ghost goal”. He showed greatability to make himself room for theshot, and it was a heck of a strike. I wassitting high up in the main stand, andeven from there, because of the waythe ball changed direction after it hitsomething, I could tell that it wasn’t thepost. Chatting to some of their lads, they said it’s happened a number oftimes in training. It’s hard for the offi-cials because they have to make a deci-sion quickly, but it does seem there’s afault in the design of the supports forthose goals.Against Gosport on New Year’s Day,after Tony Lee had gone off and theirplayer-manager came on, we were soon top and in control. We looked solidand were well worth our three goal lead. But then we took our feet off the gas,and it was an awkward last 15 minutes. With your greatsupport, the boysare making theKoolpak quite afortress. It’s vitalthat we keep thisrun going.Let’s all get behindthe boys this after-noon, and enjoyanother great oc-casion.

Wimborne Town 3 Gosport Borough 2 - 1 Jan 2019 - Max Emes reportsManager Matty Holmes had to make alate change when key defender MattyOldring was announced unfit to playminutes before kickoff.Toby Holmes netted two goals for theMagpies as ex-Wimborne goalkeeperPatrick O’Flaherty stood tall in Gos-port’s goal trying to deny his formerteam-mates from scoring. However, it would be striker Toby Holm-es who was first on the scoresheet onthe 9th minute when a lofted pass wasplayed from Luke Burbidge and allowedToby to lightly chip the ball over Patrick.Gosport responded on the 15th minutewhen fullback Harry Medway played alow cross to winger Patrick Suraci whoslotted the ball slightly wide to the left. Aminute later, there was a sense of relieffrom the home fans when Wimborne’scaptain Billy Maybury magically clearedthe ball off the line from George Bark-er’s original header towards goal.Running on the right wing Luke Bur-bidge struck the ball towards Patrickwhich was parried out to the open TobyHolmes, who was all left by himself asunusually he scored this time not withhis foot but his head to extend Wim-borne’s lead to 2-0 on the 20th minute.Four minutes later Burbidge played athrough ball to Toby who fired againfrom the right side but keeperO’Flaherty saved well.Gosport’s captain Tony Lee wasstretchered off shortly after, and wasreplaced by manager Craig Mcallister. Before the break Gosport’s striker RyanPennery eagerly stood inside the box ashe volleyed the ball from a cross butplaced the shot wide to the left.

Just three minutes into the second half,Toby Holmes was replaced by youngAidan Shepherd. The 51st minute sawShepherd run into the box but he wasbrought down from a fair tackle by de-fender Sam Roberts whilst many sup-porters were shouting for a penalty. On 62 minutes, midfielder Luke Holmesstruck his shot towards the Gosportgoal from outside the box as again itwas parried out, but this time the ballhad rebounded to winger Curtis Youngwho darted and tapped in the rebound-ed shot to increase Wimborne’s lead.Enjoying a 3-0 lead may have impactedWimborne’s mentality of sitting back, but playing at this level it's crucial to beon the alert for the whole 90 minutes.Gosport exposed the hosts when sub-stitute David Jerrard slotted the ballpast Gerard Benfield to the bottom rightcorner on the 75th minute. Five minuteslater Ryan Pennery finally got his goalwhen he tapped the ball in from a lowcross.Losing a 3 goal lead was almost nearbut Wimborne managed to switch onand prevent Gosport from scoring their3rd. The Magpies finished the gameachieving the much needed 3 points.

Frome Town 1 Wimborne Town 0 - 5 Jan 2019 - Graham Dunn reportsAfter Wimborne had missed an earlypenalty, Frome bagged three crucialpoints late on with a deflected goal toend the Magpies' unbeaten 4-game run. With Toby Holmes fit to play, but notMatty Oldring, Matty Holmes restoredJames Stokoe to his starting XI withCurtis Young dropping to the bench.Frome's captain and left-back, SamTeale, had the first attempt at goal on 4minutes when his drive from 20 yardswhistled past Gerard Benfield's right-hand post. Almost immediately Stokoeresponded with a snap shot which, too, went wide of the target. Three minuteslater Luke Burbidge tricked his full-backto cross from the by-line, but Frome'sstand-in keeper, manager DannyGreaves, made an easy catch. On 10 minutes Burbidge was up to histricks again. This time deceiving centre-back Marcus Mapstone whose long legbrought him down. Referee Baker de-cided the offence took place just insidethe box. After a lengthy delay, Greavesguessed right and clawed away TobyHolmes' spot kick.At the mid-point of the half, Burbidge's20-yard free-kick was wide and high;Franklyn Clarke cut in from the left on38 minutes but his shot was at a com-fortable height for Greaves; andStokoe's charge through the middle justbefore the break came to nothing.Apart from that it was a dour 45 minuteson a heavy, clinging pitch with defencesin control. The hosts could only muster2 attempts on goal, neither on target. The second period started brighter.Skipper Billy Maybury made a decisivechallenge to deny Ryan Bath while atthe other end Toby was just beaten tothe ball in a goalmouth scramble. Lee

Francis showed great determination tocome through two tackles, and Tobydrew another save from Greaves at thenear post from an acute angle. May-bury's audacious 30-yard grubber free-kick was blocked before Luke Holmesshot wide following a driving run.On the hour mark Curtis Young re-placed Toby and was immediately in theaction. Sam Davidson brought the ballout of defence and found Young. Thesubstitute made light of the difficult sur-face down the inside-right channel, scampered past a defender and forcedGreaves to an excellent full-length save.Following a corner, Frome's Mapstonevolleyed against the bar at the mid-pointof the half; and Gerard Benfield made afine diving save from Ollie Knowles be-fore that crucial goal on 82 minutes. From a throw-in on the left, Frome'sJohnny Gorman worked his way alongthe by-line before his low cross took adeflection to go inside the far post. There was time for a flurry of Wimbornefree-kicks which were repelled. This was not a game which will lingerlong in the memory. As the fifth game ina tiring fifteen days, this was not a sur-face the players would have relished.

Merthyr Town F.C. came into existencewhen it became obvious to a loyal bandof supporters that Merthyr Tydfil A.F.C.,a club with a long and distinguished his-tory in non-league football, would not beable to overcome its financial problemsover the previous few seasons.Merthyr Tydfil A.F.C. was formed in1945. After spending the 1945-46 sea-son in the Welsh League, the Club waselected to the Southern League in thesummer of 1946. The team embarkedon a spell of success that is unlikely ev-er to be bettered in non-league footballas over the next eight seasons the Clubwent on to capture 5 Southern LeagueChampionships, 2 Southern LeagueCups, 2 Welsh Cups, 3 South Walesand Mon Cups, 3 Welsh League Cham-pionships and 3 Welsh League Cups. The 50’s, 60’s and 70’s marked turbu-lent time in the club’s history, and theearly1980’s were dark days at Penydar-ren Park as the team drifted along in theSouthern League Midland Division. However, the appointment of Lyn Jonesas manager in 1985 would prove to bethe catalyst for another golden era inthe history of Merthyr Tydfil FootballClub. In the summer of 1986 a newsyndicate headed by local businessmanJohn Reddy took control at PenydarrenPark. The team finished in third place inthe Midland Division after being defeat-ed by eventual champions V.S. Rugbyin a ‘winner takes all’ final match of theseason at Penydarren Park. The sameseason saw the Martyrs win the WelshCup when they defeated Newport Coun-ty by a goal to nil in a replay.Winning the Welsh Cup had earned theClub the right to compete in the Europe-an Cup Winners Cup. The draw pairedthe Martyrs with Italian side Atlalanta.

On 20th September 1987 Merthyrshocked the football world when goalsby Kevin Rogers and Ceri Williams sawthe Italians humbled at Penydarren Parkby two goals to one. Although the ad-venture ended a fortnight later with anarrow 2-0 defeat in Italy. The 1987-88 season ended with theClub being crowned champions of theSouthern League Midland Division. Thiswas capped a year later when the Mar-tyrs ran out winners of the Premier Divi-sion. Merthyr ended the 1989-90season, their first in the Conference, ina credible ninth place. After once again finishing the 1990-91season in ninth place, the team endedthe following campaign in a very credi-ble fourth place.. During this time thestanding of the Club was such that CS-KA Moscow, Red Star Belgrade andGlasgow Celtic all visited PenydarrenPark for friendly fixtures. The fourth place finish at the end of the1991-92 signalled the end of the goldenera at Penydarren Park. Two years laterthe Club only escaped relegation on atechnicality. However, not even the re-turn of Lyn Jones could prevent theMartyrs from being relegated at the endof the 1994-95 campaign. The Martyrs endured more turbulenttimes after this with numerous chairmenand managers, the high point beingwhen a Merthyr side managed by exAthletico Madrid Manager Colin Addi-son finished 2nd to Forest Green Rov-ers in the Southern League in the late90s. By 2004 all supporters were natu-rally frustrated with events, that summerthe decision was taken to set up a sup-porters’ trust - ‘Martyrs to the Cause’.As well as trying to support the Clubfinancially the Trust decided to foster

young football talent by setting up aMerthyr Tydfil A.F.C. youth team.In 2005/6 the Club enjoyed a successfulrun in the F.A. Cup. In the First RoundProper of the competition they lost two-one at home to Walsall, managed byformer Arsenal star Paul Merson. In 2006 newly appointed Gary Shep-hard and his assistant Danny Carterassembled a squad comprising of youthand locally based players, and the newplayers rose to the task and the Martyrsended the 2007-08 season in a credita-ble sixteenth place. The 2008-09 season was probably themost difficult in the Club’s chequeredhistory. With owner Wyn Holloway de-claring he would no longer continue toput money into the Club, there was areal danger that the Martyrs would fail tocomplete the campaign. However, amassive effort by Merthyr supportersensured that this would not be the case. This backs-to-the-wall spirit was repli-cated by the players who, despite goingwithout wages for weeks at a time, end-ed the season in eighth place. In June 2009 the Club went into Admin-istration. In early July of that year theSupporters’ Trust received the go aheadto operate the Club under license. Acombination of a ten point deduction, injuries and suspensions prevented theplayers from repeating their success ofthe previous campaign finishing seven-teenth in the Zamaretto Premier. As the season drew to a close it be-came increasingly obvious to everyoneconnected with the club that MerthyrTydfil A.F.C. was doomed. Consequent-ly the Trust Board took the decision tocarry on as a reformed club. However, legal problems meant that we would not

be able to use Penydarren Park, thehome of senior football in the Boroughof Merthyr Tydfil for over one hundredyears. Merthyr played at Taff’s Well F.C.for one season in the Western LeagueFirst Division and gained immediatepromotion to the Premier Division.Merthyr Town FC returned to its spiritualhome at Penydarren Park for 2011/12season. The Martyrs secured a 2ndsuccessive promotion on their returnhome to go straight through WesternLeague into the Southern League.Merthyr lost in the play-off final at Hun-gerford Town to finish the 2012/13 sea-son and Cirencester Town in 2013/14.Garry Shephard & Danny Carter stooddown after 7 years, and ex-Welsh inter-national and Merthyr born SteveJenkins took the helm assisted by an-other Merthyr born Welsh internationalGavin Williams. Steve and Gavin led theteam to the league title by 12 points. In 15/16 season the club won the RedInsure Cup and finished 10th in theirfirst Premier Division season. At the endof the season Steve Jenkins left theclub, and Gavin Williams took over asmanager, with Dean Clarke returning tothe club as his assistant. In Gavin’s firstseason he led the club to the play-offsfinishing 3rd, but lost to Hitchin Town inthe semi-final on penalties. In 17/18 we saw an up & down seasonwith financial issues affecting the club. The low point was 13-1 defeat atChesham which sparked a Just Givingcampaign to clear bills. The club did sta-bilize with management team and play-ers remaining loyal to finish 17thThe club has stabilised and we look for-ward to the 18/19 season in the newleague structure.

Merthyr Town 1 Salisbury 2 - N-LP report 6 Jan by Anthony Hughes

Lee Lucas and Ashley Evans had long-range efforts turned away by Salisburykeeper James Hills before the visitorsbegan to get a foothold.Lewis Benson forced a fingertip savefrom Lewis Webb just before half-timebut it was after the break that Salisburytook charge. It was a piece of qualityfrom Thomas Whelan that turned thegame, the midfielder fending off twochallenges before guiding a delightfulshot wide of Webb on 48 minutes.

Aaron Dawson curled another shot justwide two minutes later but Merthyrcame back into proceedings - forcing aflurry of corners and having a longthrow which caused havoc in the visit-prs’ defence was cleared off the line.Jack Sparkes seemed to have put theresult beyond doubt on 83 minutes, scoring direct from a free-kick butMerthyr pulled a goal back in injury-time as Lucas curled a shot home from18 yards after taking a quick free-kick.

BOSS Steve Cuss admitted MerthyrTown's cutting edge had proved thedifference after watching his Wimborneside slip to a fourth straight defeat.Jarrad Wright put the Southern South &West leaders in front just after the halfhour mark and Kayne McLaggon madesure of victory midway through the sec-ond period. While pleased with certain aspects ofthe Wimborne display, Cuss saidMerthyr's finishing prowess had ren-dered them worthy winners. He told the Daily Echo: “We had spellsin the game where we did reasonablywell but during those spells you need to

score and that didn't happen. Oncethey got the first goal it gave them areal foothold in the game and they con-trolled it from that point onwards. Theyhad good spells during the game andthey scored during those spells. Thatwas the difference. There were no com-plaints about the result. Merthyr look areally good side with loads of experi-ence. I think they showed their qualityand it was too much for us.”Magpies: Harvell, Arnold, Brimson,Maybury, Costello, Blake, Griffin (Wa-ters, 65), Davidson, Kemble (Webb,65), Gamble, Stokoe. MATTY Holmes praised the resolve ofhis Wimborne Town side after they bat-tled in vain at Merthyr Town.Magpies squandered three first-halfchances to open the scoring before IanTraylor capitalised on a defensive errorto give the Welsh side the lead.Wimborne coped with stern pressurefrom the Southern League South highfliers but failed to find an equaliser. The hosts secured the win in stoppagetime through a Kerry Morgan strike af-ter Magpies threw caution to the wind.Boss Holmes told the Daily Echo: “Itwas a tough game for us. Merthyr arethe best team we have played this sea-son. We coped really well but theymoved the ball at speed.“Once they scored we galvanised our-selves and played some cracking foot-ball. Luke Holmes had a great shot justpast the post, Franklyn Clarke had two

efforts, Luke Burbidge was causing afew problems and their manager saidafter that they never felt comfortable. The second goal came when we gam-bled with just three at the back.”Clarke was denied on several occa-sions in the first half by excellent workfrom Merthyr goalkeeper Joe Perry. At the other end, Gerard Benfield madea fine save and Matt Oldring delivereda goal-line clearance after half-time,however Merthyr finally broke throughwhen Traylor punished a lapse in con-centration from Wimborne.Magpies had chances to level beforeMorgan broke away in the closing stag-es to confirm the win.Magpies: Benfield, Penny (Lee, 77),Hester, Davidson, Oldring, Clarke,Francis (Young, 90), L Holmes, T Hol-mes (Flynn, 61), Burbidge, Maybury.Unused subs: Arnold, Collins (g/k).

Page 38: The Official Wimborne Town F.C. Matchday Programme £2 · 1/12/2019  · Patrick O’Flaherty stood tall in Gos-port’s goal trying to deny his former team-mates from scoring. However,

Wimborne Town FC DevelopmentSquad welcomed the Brockenhurst Re-serves team to a chilly Cuthbury lastSaturday. The Brockenhurst squadlooked well balanced with a mixture ofexperienced and youth players. It was Brockenhurst who settled thequicker and had most of the early pos-session and should have taken the leadin the 13th minute when their wingerbeat our defence and pulled a great ballback from the byeline only for their strik-er to see his shot hit the recovery de-fender Sam Haynes on the goal line. This early scare sparked WTFC into lifeand they started winning more balls inmidfield. The breakthrough came in the 20thminute when WTFC's Full back BenKnight knocked a wonderful 40 yardcross field pass to Aaron Gabriel whosecushion pass found Dan Hunt who con-trolled the ball, turned his defender welland shot hard and low just inside thenear post. 1-0WTFC continued to grow in confidenceand it was no surprise when they dou-bled their lead just six minutes later.Harry Wright controlled the ball in deepmidfield and rolled his tight marker andhad the great vision to knock a lob passover the Brock defence for Dan Hunt torun onto, and cleverly head over the ad-vancing Brockenhurst goalkeeper andinto their net. 2-0.More good chances came and went, with Adam Holmes, Dan Hunt and Aar-on Gabriel all going close. Brockenhurststill kept pressing and should have cutthe WTFC lead to one after their quickcorner routine caught WTFC defenceasleep and somehow their striker arriv-

ing at the far post ballooned his fierceshot over the WTFC bar from 3 yardsout.Right on the stroke of half-time WTFCmade it 3-0 after another great run downthe left wing by Sam Haynes, pulled itback to Louis McWilliams whose lowcross found the grateful Aaron Gabrielwho tapped in from a yard out. Half-time 3-0.WTFC were forced into a defensivechange after George Smart picked up ahead injury just before half-time, whichsaw Frank Herrington come on as leftback, and Cam Smith dropping backinto the centre of defence to partnerCharlie Tilsed. It was Charlie who nearlyopened the scoring in the second halfwith a long range shot which the Brockkeeper did very well to tip onto the bar.In the 58th minute WTFC were awardeda free-kick in a wide position and BenKnight delivered a superb in-swingingfree kick which Dan Hunt cut in front onhis marker to head the ball past their GKinto the Brockenhurst net. A wonderfulsimple goal which gave Dan his welldeserved hat-trick. 4-0.Brockenhurst continued to be danger-ous on the counter-attack and nearly gota goal with a low cross shot which Sam-my Thompson in the WTFC goal saw gojust wide of his far post.WTFC fifth goal was something special,Adam Holmes with some clever foot-work laid the ball off centrally to SamHaynes whose 25 yard dipping shot flewover their GK and dipped just under thebar, a rare goal for Sam but one certain-ly worth waiting for. 5-0.

Let’s start with a question. What do youthink links these four games?WTFC vs Tiverton Town - 15.8.1981WTFC vs Thatcham Town - 22.8.1987Hungerford Town vs WTFC - 14.8.2010Farnborough vs WTFC - 11.8.2018.Well, they all took place in August andwe didn’t win any of them! But, moreimportantly, these were the first gamesthat Wimborne Town ever played at, re-spectively, Step 6, Step 5, Step 4 & Step3. They are key points on the upwardscurve of our history over the past 38years and show the progress we’vemade. And the biggest move we madeduring that time was the very first whenthe people who ran the club made thebrave decision to enter the WesternLeague back in 1981.The programme for that first ever gamein Division One of the Western Leagueagainst Tiverton was a 12 page affairwith 7 pages of adverts. Chairman JohnSmith’s “Club Comment” column startedlike this:“It is with great pleasure that WimborneTown FC welcomes all players, officialsand supporters to Cuthbury for today’sgame. This is another momentous occa-sion for the Club; the dressing roomswhich will be in use for the first time to-day are being used by players in thehighest standard of football ever playedat Cuthbury. I refer, of course, to theWestern League. Mr Billy Elliot, ourmanager, has not got an easy task, but Iam sure that he will give his all and I askplayers and supporters alike to give alltheir help and support to him.“The dressing rooms, which were builtby M & M Homecare, reflect the highstandard that we at Cuthbury have cometo expect and our thanks go to Malcolm

Long and his men for working long hoursto get them finished on time.”The programme gives the final leaguetables for 1980/81 in Dorset DivisionOne and Dorset Division Three East. Our first team finished top of DivisionOne, going unbeaten while scoring 113goals in 28 league matches and conced-ing only 15. Our Reserves finished fin-ished top of Division Three East with 15wins, 4 draws and only one defeat. Then there is a “Player Focus” onManas Cannie, brother of Billy & Steveand uncle to Stuart & Scott, all five ofwhom played for the Magpies with dis-tinction. The profile tells us that Manaswas born in Port Glasgow and hadmoved to Dorset in 1973, playing forPoole Town & Hamworthy United beforejoining Wimborne Town for the 1980/81season. Manas was Wimborne’s cap-tain for the 81/82 season. You can see the team line-ups in thepicture opposite and perhaps you mayrecall some of the businesses who ad-vertised in the programme. We lost that first game against Tivertonby 3 goals to 1 and it would be fourgames before we recorded our first everwin at Step 6 – a 2-1 home win over Ot-tery St Mary. But then results improvedand we would finish the season in 4thspot in the table with 19 wins and 9draws from our 36 league matches. It’s sometimes difficult to imagine that 38years ago we were playing in the CountyLeague at the same level as the reserveteams of Hamworthy Utd, Portland Utd &Shaftesbury. We’ve come a long waysince then and a lot of the credit must goto John Smith and his committee col-leagues for their decision to apply to theWestern League.

Page 43: The Official Wimborne Town F.C. Matchday Programme £2 · 1/12/2019  · Patrick O’Flaherty stood tall in Gos-port’s goal trying to deny his former team-mates from scoring. However,

Following our last home game, we re-ceived a super email from David aboutour programme. We thought we’d askhim a few questions. What’s your football watching history? The first match I was taken to (by myelder brother) was when I was aged 7in October 1964 Chelsea v Stoke and Iwas immediately hooked, and havebeen going to Stamford Bridge eversince. As I got older I went to more andmore games and purchased a seasonticket as soon as I started work. For tenyears now I have ‘shared’ a seasonticket, going to half of the home games.I started going to non-league football in1965 and watched Hendon, Weald-stone and Edgware Town regularly untilI married in 1987 and moved to Buck-inghamshire where I began to followChesham United. In 2015 I moved toNew Milton and now follow severalWessex League teams as well as visit-ing Wimborne Town – the friendliestclub in the area. What’s the best game you’ve seen?Over the years I have seen literallythousands of matches, the best game Ican recall was Chelsea 4 Barcelona 2in the Champions League – Chelsea3-0 up inside 20 minutes, Ronaldhinoscores twice, then a 4th goal to knockout the Spanish Giants.I recall an 8-5 game at Edgware Townand enjoyed seeing both Hendon andWealdstone both twice win major tro-phies at Wembley.I guess I should also mention a favour-ite TV match – England winning theWorld Cup in 1966 is a golden memory. What’s the best ground you’ve visited?Of the many grounds I have visited,Barcelona’s Nou Camp was mighty im-pressive, my spiritual home is Stamford

Bridge and my favourite non-leagueground was the White Lion Ground, former home of Edgware Town, now ahousing estate. It had a fabulous stand, easily the best view I ever had at anamateur ground. I have also got a softspot for Villa Park as I played my lastever game of football there aged 45 ina Charity Match.I have got to mention Wembley Stadi-um, both old and new. I lived just twounderground train stops from Wembleyand must have visited the old stadiumon over 100 occasions to watch Eng-land, The Amateur Cup Final everyyear, Concerts, Wembley Lions Speed-way and of course Chelsea. Are you / have you been involved inany clubs other than as a spectator?I was lucky enough to play Sundayfootball for nearly 30 years (but I wasnever any good!) and helped run avery successful youth team for over 15years. Nowadays I write a monthly nos-talgia article for a Chelsea fanzine, cfcuk, and in recent years I have alsocontributed to the Edgware Town pro-gramme.Who is your favourite all-time player? As a child my hero was Bobby Tam-bling, but my favourite player has got tobe Ruud Gullit – he made it look soeasy that he looked like an 18 year oldplaying in an under 12’s match.Programmes - printed or on-line?My programme collection is vast but Inow only buy for matches that I haveattended and I see them as an essen-tial part of the match, I despair at theLeague clubs who no longer print them.I have every Chelsea home programmesince 1949 and thousands of non-league ones, mainly from the clubs thatI have already mentioned.

I know you enjoy your football with theMagpies which has, over the years, been a very successful team with manyachievements, but I hope you also enjoythe floral displays throughout our beauti-ful town of Wimborne! For over 26 years Wimborne in Bloomhas provided these displays and, al-though many believe they are put inplace or funded by the local Councils, nothing could be further from the truthalthough we do enjoy very good relation-ships with both the Town Council andWimborne BID for which we are mostappreciative. Wimborne in Bloom is self-funded being totally dependent on thesuperb support given to its fund-raisingevents by the truly great and generousWimborne public. Annual display andwatering costs total over £20,000 somuch effort is needed to meet such anamount. Many organisations and teams have acompetitive element and Wimborne inBloom is no exception and we are proudto take part in an annual regional com-

petition and to have represented ourSouth & South East Region, nominatedby them, in the national RHS Britain inBloom finals in which we were veryproud to have won the national title forour entry category in 2012. Could thisbe the floral equivalent of the FA Vase?We are the first to acknowledge that ourmost important function is to ensure thatWimborne is a pleasant and visually at-tractive place to live in, work in, or visitthroughout the year and that remainsthe objective of our charity status. Tothis end we have over 130 planters, some large, some small, and during theSummer almost 200 hanging baskets allof which require maintenance!Wimborne in Bloom is lucky enough tohave an excellent team of volunteerswho keep the Town clean and tidy forthe benefit of everyone. For those ofyou who help in any way, thank youmost sincerely. We do hope you all continue to enjoyour lovely Town as much as we do!

A “vacavee”, ex-Pentrebach, gives youan additional welcome!Along with many children from the Deal /Dover area, my brother and I were wel-comed to the Merthyr area to escapethe war-time shelling. The trauma of be-ing separated from parents was relievedby the welcome we received from theWelsh folk. Thank you so much!My brother and I, now in our mid-eight-ies, were housed in Pentrebach and arestill, after over 70 years, in contact witha few of the local families. We have visit-ed the village on many occasions overthe years.I still remember the swede and vegeta-bles (Poch), and the fizzy-pop (Bing).

And Bill Huwlett your goal-scorer espe-cially - no artificial grass then.Although Kent footballers could still giveMerthyr a good game, we won’t pretendto match you at rugby.Welsh folk - thank you so much for yourhospitality.God bless the Welsh folk.
