ANHS celebrates Academic Week 2018
By Dolorez Z. Potoy, 7-A
With the theme “Where There’s Grit, There’s Excellence,” the Academ-
ic Week Celebration was held on February 14-21, 2018. This aims to showcase
students’ achievements and harness their potentials in different areas related
with academics.
The weeklong celebration started with a Concept Parade where each
class has to interpret the theme through a meaningful tableau. Winners of the
said competition were SHS-TVL (Champion), Grade 11-TVL (First Runner-up),
and Grade 10-A (2nd Runner-up).
Pagalingan/Quiz Bee was the next activity where students were tested
in terms of their academic excellence in different subject areas. The Quiz Bee
was conducted to all students to maximize their participation in the said activity
and test what they have learned.
The culminating activity was the Amazing Race 2.0 where students
applied the knowledge and skills they learned in different subject areas in com-
pleting the tasks prepared by their subject teachers. Each group is composed of
students from different year levels to ensure that they also develop camaraderie
and teamwork while doing the tasks. The Champion for Amazing Race 2.0 was
the House of Blessed Arnould Reche headed by JL Dexter Q. Bactad of SHS-
ABM as the Team Leader. Members of the winning team include Cromel John
Aseremo of 7-A, John Philip Santos of 7-A, Vincent Basibas of 8-A, Sydney Al-
bano of 10-A, Christian Cayago of 10-B, Albert Bitanga of 9-B, John Paul Bacli-

Representatives from SEAMEO INNOTECH namely Ms. Eunilaine
Bagaligog and Ms. Charmie Cardenas visited the Adult Night High School for a
Project on Alternative Delivery Modes for Secondary Education last February 5,
2018.
Mrs. Agnes C. Alonsozana said “We welcome the SEAMEO INNOTECH
visitors who are to conduct a one-day visit of the ANHS, as part of the research
they are conducting about Alternative Delivery Modes. We hope to make it to the
front lines, to tell others what a wonderful ministry serving in the Night School
is—that ANHS is, and will always be, a work of love.”
The activity started with a Focused Group Discussion (FGD) with the
Principal and teachers followed by FGD with parents and guardians. After that,
they also got the chance to interact with the Hearing and Deaf learners. Students
were asked about their experiences in the night school and its difference with the
regular school. According to Majorie Peligrin of SHS-TVL, one of the students
who was part of the FGD, when she was asked about the advantage of night
The said visit ended with a classroom observation in 10-B during the
English class of Miss Bernadette P. Nolasco where the representatives got the
chance to see how classes are conducted in ANHS.

A. Quiboquibo, President.
Administrators and teachers
were present in the said event who
served as judges since this was a per-
formance task of SHS-TVL for their
course. Preparation was done by stu-
dents from planning up to the actual
implementation under the guidance of
their course trainer and adviser Mrs.
Jackeline M. Baay.
According to Aireen Gordo of
SHS-TVL, one of the hosts that night,
“Masaya at nakakakaba dahil nanonood
ang ibang administrators at teachers
namin kasi baka may mabitawan akong
hindi magandang words or jokes.
This is an experience of a life-
time to the graduating batch.
Wearing their 80s costumes,
the Senior High School TVL organized
the graduation ball as part of their
Events Management NC III course last
February 28, 2018 at the St. Benilde
Cafeteria.

bration as guests. SHS students
grabbed the opportunity to gather as a
batch in this event where they could
make memories before they bid fare-
well to their alma mater.
Fun and exciting activities
were prepared for the participants that
developed their camaraderie. Selected
students also showcased their talents
through series of intermission num-
bers that enlivened the night. Students
also danced to the beat of the music

ranasan na nagbigay-aral na huwag
manghusga ng kapwa sa halip, bigyan
sila ng pagkakataon upang magbago
at maituwid ang kanilang buhay.
Ang nasabing pagbisita ay
naisakatuparan sa pamamagitan ng

pinangunahan ng mga gurong-
tagapayo na sina G. Joseph G. Laviña
ng 11-ABM at Bb. Junelyn R. Domin-

May pagkakataon na kapag
narinig ang salitang Mandaluyong,
may biruan na “sa labas ba o sa

PUNLAD
In the recently held graduation ceremony in the Adult Night
High School, the oldest graduate is a 63-year old mother and church
volunteer whom the students fondly call as Nanay Sally. She went
back to school because she wanted to fulfill her dream of finishing high
school. She worked here and abroad, but she still felt the emptiness
within. Having a family also hindered her desire to study because she
had to take care of her children first thereby sacrificing her own educa-
tion. Now that they are grown up, it is time to devote it to herself and
her dream which she has carried in her heart for a long time.
In ANHS, there are many students who experience the same
fate as Nanay Sally. They have to sacrifice their studies to work in or-
der to provide for their families. There are also those who opt to be
student vendors, so they will have allowance for fare and other school
requirements. Some of them made mistakes in the past, and they
would like to make amends by doing better this time. Some students
endure the mockery of others who question their desire to study de-
spite their age. However, there are some whose dreams are bigger than
any insult they hear. They would like to prove to others that they can
make it.
Some teenagers are celebrating now after graduating in Senior
High School, but in ANHS it is different. We have students who are
parents already and working students beyond 18 years old who also
celebrated their success after finishing high school. This just says that
success knows no age because everyone is given a second chance to
straighten his/her paths through education. Students believe that edu-
cation is one powerful weapon they can use to help their families get
out of poverty and eventually help change the world. Success comes
sweetest to those who wait. ANHS students may have waited for this
time, and it took them years to be able to achieve their dreams. As they
say, the destination does not matter; it is the journey that counts.
True to its mission, ANHS provides quality Catholic education
to those who once were lost but now are found to begin a new chapter
in their lives. In ANHS hope is alive in our hearts, forever!
During darkness it is when the stars shine brightest. Graduation is
definitely the brightest time of the year for the students of ANHS who
have endured all the trials and struggles just to be able to finish their stud-
ies. We have seen one another on stage happily receiving our diploma be-
cause we have finished another chapter in our lives, our high school life.
We lit our candles one by one that serve as our guide to continue
shining despite the difficulties we have encountered. We are not afraid to
walk in the dark because of the light our candles bring. No matter how
hard the journey in life, we always look back to the values and attitudes we
have possessed in order to overcome life’s challenges.
We make mistakes along the way. We fail to do our responsibilities
as students. We incur absences, and we do not submit requirements on
time. However, we also learn from our shortcomings, and we vow never to
commit the same mistakes again. We have to be humble, gain respect, and
serve the community.
We may have won the battle now, but it does not stop here. We
should continue to let our candles light for others and pass on what we
have learned in our alma mater. May we remain grateful for the many
blessings our school has given us through the generous hearts of the De La
Salle Brothers, benefactors, donors, faculty, staff, parents, employers,
guardians, family, friends, schoolmates, and most especially our Almighty
God for the chance given to us to continue our studies.
Let us keep the banner high and carry with us the Lasallian spirit
and teachings of St. John Baptist de La Salle wherever we may go. May the
animo live in our hearts and shine to the new chapter of our lives. Hail to
thee our alma mater!
Keep shining no
matter what By Vergel Jay D.G. Berona, SHS-ABM

OPINION THIRD TRIMESTER 2017-2018 5
say. Tayo ay likas na mananagumpay. Nagkakaiba nga lang tayo sa pag-
iisip at pagpupursige.
katulad kong working stud ent.
muli.
Anti-
Contractualization
All these years, many Filipino workers are suffering due to the
practice of “endo” or end-of-contract. Under this scheme, workers are
hired for just five months then replaced by new contractual employees.
Those who ended their contracts have to find another job again, and if
they are hired by a company that practices endo, the cycle is just repeat-
ed. The workers also clamor for a permanent work to secure their fami-
lies and loved ones.
According to Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III, the Duterte ad-
ministration has banned the “endo” or end-of-contract scheme. This is
good news to those who up to now are still experiencing instability in
their status due to contractualization.
Recently, Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) orders
Jollibee and Burger King to regularize 7,000 of its workers. In cases like
this, some employers prefer contractualization than regularization of
their work force to reduce the cost, but it also denies security of tenure to
their workers. Some workers grab the opportunity of working for five
months only because they do not have any work. If working for five
months will give them food on the table, it is better than nothing for
them.
Our fellow Filipinos won’t have stability unless the anti-
contractualization law will totally be implemented in the Philippines. It
is now time for the government to also look into the needs of the workers
who also do their best to serve in order to provide for their families.
Ginabayan nila ako at

PANITIKAN
Mandirigma Ni Jovanie C. Bonaobra, TVET– Cookery (Wednesday)
Pagkalinga sa Mundo (Cares for the Earth) Ni Nicole P. Astroga, 10-A
PUNLAD
Pagkamahabagin (Compassionate) Ni Roselyn C. Dela Vega, 9-B
Pagmamalasakit sa mga Nangangailangan (Concerned for the Marginalized) Ni Dolorez P. Potoy, 7-A
LITERARY THIRD TRIMESTER 2017-2018 7
I. Hey, I just want you to know that I love you, Even before those words were created. There is no mistake, it’s all true, I love how perfectly you are invented. II. Look, I love you even before the stars were placed, Before he said he’ll snatch them for you. I love you before those rings were made, Before you changed vows and said, I do. III. Stop, You are not unwanted; you are not ugly, Please stop saying those trash like it’s funny. You are significant; you’re my treasure, You are definitely not a failure. IV. Don’t, Don’t you ever forget that I am here, And yes My Dear, I count those tears, those pleads. I hear My Dear; don’t you always forget that I’m always near. Even if the love doesn’t usually come back. I’m ready to be martyr. V. Yes, I’ll die for you even a thousand times, I’ll carry this deadweight cross just like the olden times, Sold my body for 13 silver dimes and drink that wine. Over and over again, if that’s what it takes to lift you up again. I love you my precious Princess.

Faith, Service, and Communion
By Irene Viviene E. Abad, 10-B
Life is full of unending struggles and unbearable pain That will blur your belief in God, But keep in mind that He is always On your side no matter what happens. With every step you take in the dark God is with you to lighten your path. With every tear that runs down from your eyes, God is there to wipe it away. With every help you give to people, Remember that He is smiling to your kindness. Let the pain make you bloom Like a flower under the sun And strong like a warrior in a war. No one can break you If you put your whole trust and faith in Him.
Confident By John Christopher Glenn L. Leones, 11-TVL
I am a Lasallian student Known for being keen and bright I speak my thoughts with confidence For I believe it is right. We grow with the help of our school Not being swallowed by the world Knowing right, not just cool We walk with our pen as our swords. Hail to our Alma mater Hail to De La Salle For we know what really matters, And we will practice it so we won’t be dull. I am a Lasallian student Known for being keen and bright I speak my thoughts with confidence Representing Green and White.
Contributes to Society By Denise R. Castro, 10-B
You and I, we were made to reciprocate But it’s also fine if we make a mistake Because one day, we’ll do something great That will benefit the whole human race. That wind may take us to places And we might find ourselves seeing new faces But always remember to leave traces That will help other people’s choices. Because it’s all in a matter of give and take But we need to learn to give without being fake Because at the end of the day we’re all just one little speck Which will one day collide without a fret. Happiness is beyond words When you have your greatness in records But great boldness comes with great responsibility, So put that in to good use and help the community.
A Love Letter from above By John Christopher Glenn L. Leones, 11-TVL
When I first on sat on my seat here in ANHS, I had no plans to make any awards or any special thing that could make my par-ents proud. But boy, my parents were right! They said “wag mo pangunahan ang sarili mo.”
My journey as a leader started when I was elected as a Vice President of our class in Grade 9. At first, I thought it was another kind of boring leadership where students with higher position get attention and fame. I am glad it was not like that. As a Vice-President of the class, I have two duties: to get the One Heart One Purpose (OHOP) box every day and to presume the duties of the President, if he/she is absent. It was quite tiring to do that duty especially the getting the OHOP box and re-turning it to where it belongs, but it was worth it every time the OHOP box gets counted every end of the week and the accumulated fund goes to the student/s who is/are in-need.
When I was in Grade 10, I was elected as a Spiritual Coordinator of the Student Council. Being part of the SC sharpens my leadership skills. It reminds me that I should be responsible of my actions since eve-ry action I make reflects not only the organization where I belong but also the entire ANHS community. On my final year in ANHS, I was elected Vice President of the Student Council. This is where my perspective as a student-leader has broadened. I have a higher position, which means I need to be responsive and responsible at the same time. I need to show good leadership through collaboration and teamwork. To be honest, I have faced a lot of challenges, especially the time management. Sometimes when there were activities, I did not make it to call time; worst was I became absent and was not able to attend the ac-tivity. I cannot blame it to the traffic; it’s given. This made me to move quicker and more efficiently. I need to stop procrastinating just like what I did before. Being committed to excellence as a leader is not only learned by overnight. It is a habit.

Faculty and student exchange program between ANHS and LSVMS
By Gabriel Antonio V. Mendoza, 10-B
I would like to share with you my wonderful experiences in our Palawan trip during the faculty and
student exchange program between LSGH-ANHS and Leonides S. Virata Memorial School (LVSMS) in Bata-
raza town in Palawan. I really had no idea about this trip until our principal, Ms. Agnes asked me whether my
parents would approve if I would go far from Manila. I told her that I have been to Korea and Indonesia in
the past, but I would still ask my father if he will agree. She told me that she wanted me to go to Palawan with
two other ANHS students. I was really excited and nervous for this trip because if this will be a talent show-
down I don’t know if I can contribute. When I got home, I told my father about it, and he agreed.
On January 17, 2018, six representatives from ANHS went to Palawan namely Mr. Rheal D. Dayrit
(Administrative Services Head Administrator), Mr. Kent Alfred E. San Felipe (Student Council Moderator),
Ms. Ana Ria B. Aguilar (Social Concerns Program Moderator), Angeliene A. Tulauan (SC President), Jobilee
D. Melecio (SC Deaf Representative), and myself (10-B student). The trip was long, as far as I can remember, 1-
hour flight and 5 hours drive from the airport to Rio Tuba. Our first stop was at Ka Inato, a native restaurant
that is very affordable. They have breakfast buffet, but what surprised me is that they have Deaf employees.
Jobilee was able to interact with them and we also had a photo with all of the Deaf employees. We were
amazed and happy with what we’ve experienced. After that, we went back to our van and continued our jour-
ney going to Rio Tuba. On our arrival, Ms. Noemi, the LSVMS Principal was there waiting for us and welcomed us. She is so nice, always smiling and generous, just like
our principal, Ms. Agnes. She gave us more information about our trip.
On the next day, we went to LSVMS. Ms. Noemi toured us in the school. We met students along the way. The computer lab in LSVMS is nice. The units are
MAC PC’s. They also had an exhibit that week where there are lots of displays such as medals, championship trophies, among others. I think it is similar to our Aca-
demic Fair exhibit where teachers showcase the best projects of their students. They also showed us the new high school building that is operational and another build-
ing that is under construction. After our tour in the school, our next trip was in the mining site. We attended a seminar first. Ms. Noemi’s son Gabriel was our tour
guide. He also informed us the do’s and don’ts in the site for our safety. Taking photos is prohibited. To summarize, if the acid they use leaked, they pour limestone to
stop the hazard it will create. The acid is used for converting the raw materials to nickel, etc. The safety of the employees is prioritized. One bag of their product costs
around P 400,000. After our tour in the mining site, Gabriel showed us something really beautiful, the reforestation of the old dump site. Isn’t it amazing? An old mine
site is now a forest. I really can’t believe it is true. I know that mining is bad for our nature. It is very destructive. Somehow it can be restored depending on the owner of
the mining company. That is what RTN and CNBC chose. They chose to give something back to our nature after mining the minerals. This is something all mining com-
panies should do. They should give something back to our nature after they receive something from it. On that night, we went to the school gym to watch Mentors
Night. Teachers performed for their students. They had a lot of shows like comedy, singing, dancing, and acting. I hope our school will have this activity too. I want to
see my teachers sing and dance too.
On the following day, they had a big event, the field demonstration day where Grade 1 to 6 students would perform cheering or dancing in front of everyone
including LSVMS school administrators and visitors. The students were accompanied by their advisers for moral support. It was great to see young kids enjoying and
performing. Later that night, our last night in Rio Tuba, we went back to LSVMS gym. We watched Mr. and Ms. Lakan ng Kalikasan which is similar to Mr. and Ms.
LSGH-ANHS, but it is more about preserving our nature. It is where our LGA Cares for the Earth is being manifested. They had great costumes, really great ones. But
some of the participants from the other grade level failed at the Question and Answer portion, which led the Grade 11 students to bag the title of Mr. and Ms. Lakan ng
Kalikasan 2018 Champions. Their answer was simple and great, but it was very impactful that won the hearts of the judges. I also delivered a thank you speech on
stage. After my speech, Angeliene sang Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking out Loud” with Jobilee signing it. The students of LSVMS also participated by singing and signing also.
It was really wonderful to see most of the crowd signing in the chorus part. We were able to share some knowledge with them, and they were able to share some
knowledge with us too.
Finally, before we went back to Manila, we went to LSVMS for the last time. Ms. Noemi gave us souvenirs and thanked us for visiting LSVMS. We thanked
everyone who welcomed us, spent their time with us, and made our trip more wonderful. It was really a great experience to be able to participate and learn new things
from other people. To be honest, I am not the type of person who likes to travel, but I hope that someday I can go back to LSVMS and have more amazing experiences
again. It was totally worth it.
may pinag-aralan.
Lupang Hinirang.
Nagka-
