Meeting Minutes Continued….. Unfinished Business: New Members – Approved – Kitty Keiner New Business: Tim V. read a recent article from a NAVDA publication that was written by Jim Reiser (who was a member in 1973). Discussion was made about this and our clubs reputation. Dan E. discussed the work that has been going on at Solon Springs. Much work has been done including putting up barns, leveling the grounds, new bathrooms, a new well and power. The grounds are used by many clubs including dog clubs and horseback clubs. Trials have been held there since the 1920’s. The grounds are owned by the State of Wisconsin and Douglas County. Dan made a motion to donate $2000.00 to help improve these grounds. Motion passed with 10 in favor and 4 opposed. Dan proposed to combine the board meetings with the general membership meetings. Discussion was made. It was decided to discuss this more at the next meeting. Todd P. made a motion to upgrade our website to a hosting company. He would like to use Club Express (see www.clubexpress.com). He thought it would cost about $6.00/per person per year. For an additional fee, they could also do our newsletter and mail it to those members would did not have internet access. Dis-cussion was made and decision was tabled until we could get more info. Website committee will meet and get more info. Meeting was adjourned at 8:18pm Next meeting will be at the Annual Awards Banquet on Saturday March 20, at 6:00pm at Sundance Golf and Bowl in Dayton, MN.

Four Brooks At the Jan. 5 meeting the subject of Four Brooks was brought up. Our original reason for joining the club was to train there and I was informed by the president at that time the club would sponsor training days there. That was in February of 2003 and to the best of my knowledge there has been 2 training days since that time. I did, however, meet Chad Hines there and he got me started in AKC Hunting tests. I have also trained several master dogs there and have had the opportunity to run my dogs with some very talented dogs and trainers. I would like to see a test there again. The cover is far superior to Kelly Farms in the early spring. For a purely selfish reason walking on flat ground is much easier for a old guy. Also would like to know if there would be interest in having a training day during the hunt test season with birds available and dogs to run yours with. Probably on Thursdays like

before and open to anyone with a permit. Very informal do what ever you want. I have never understood the problems between the Federation and the GSPC. I have seen some E-mails that were

personally insulting and rude and assume from that it is mostly personal. It was stated at the meeting the club do-nated $2500 several times. That, in fact is not true. GSPCMN donated $2500 to the fence building fund in 2002. and that was the total donation from the club. The total fence donations from all sources were 15,700 The total spent there was: donations: 28,173 DNR grants; 71,500 Total 99,673 It was also stated that the federation planned on a national caliber grounds. If you believe that I have a bridge for sale. The grounds are not big enough for national horse back field trials the south area is to low and forested land is expensive to develop. The grant money was for wetland restoration and brushland management We have a pretty good place to train and I have seen many of you there. I think it is $2500 well spent. Any comment on this would be appreciated. Thanks, Jerry Hills

I received the following thoughts from Jerry Hills after our last meeting. If you have a thought or comment on Four Brooks, or on any other subjects you’d like to discuss in the newsletter, let me know.

I just loved this story about a great GSP….

A yank from Effie, and man frozen to ground is saved ABBY SIMONS, Star Tribune

Brett Grinde and his German shorthair, Effie, hadn't made it far on their typical late-afternoon walk on Monday when the old hunting dog suddenly began pulling to the right. Grinde, a Pine County sheriff's investigator, let Effie lead the way as she strained with her nose to the ground along the road along Pokegama Lake. He let her off the leash and she tore away and turned into a driveway 40 yards away, stopping at the body of Grinde's 94-year-old neighbor, William Lepsch. He was unconscious and frozen to the ground. "I ran after her and when I turned into the driveway I couldn't believe it," Grinde later wrote in an e-mail to Lepsch's family. "He had some serious exposure and blood underneath him. I have seen plenty of de-ceased people and thought he was dead." So did Lepsch's wife, Marjorie, who said she peeked outside several minutes after her husband of 67 years disappeared at about 2 p.m. to retrieve the mail without telling her. She saw him lying in the driveway bleeding "from head to toe." She couldn't go outside and struggled to dial 911, but repeatedly misdialed out of panic. Marjorie, 88, who uses a wheelchair and walker, was unable to help him. Several more minutes passed until she was able to dial a niece who promised to get help and head over. In the meantime, Effie approached. "Nobody's around and I'm out there hollering 'Somebody please help me!' but there was no one," she said. "In the meantime this dog ran up and began licking his face." Grinde kept Lepsch's airway open and called 911 while the dog nuzzled his arms and shoulders as he worked on Lepsch. The dog then ran to the house where medics and deputies heard Marjorie Lepsch yelling from inside. William Lepsch survived, thanks to Effie's instincts and the training and quick thinking of her master. Lepsch is in serious condition at North Memorial Medical Center with broken ribs and other ailments, said Chief Deputy Steve Ovick of the Pine County Sheriff's Office, who said Grinde declined to speak to reporters in favor of letting his dog take the credit. Ovick was quick to praise both. "Effie's a happy-go-lucky hunting dog," Ovick said of the 16-year-old dog named after the tiny Minnesota town where Grinde has a hunting cabin. "She's out and about, chasing and running, and just to be remarkably calm like that. At the time, how did that dog know, and whose will was it that Brett decided to take the dog out at that time?" Marjorie Lepsch, still shaken by the incident, chastised the "best husband in the world" who she said continues to insist on fetching the mail. She was near tears as she remembered the sight of the brown dog who seemed came out of nowhere. "I've seen this man walk his dog every day on our road," she said. "I am so grateful to them, I am. Because I couldn't get out there. I was stuck."
