On The CoverThis month's cover was taken at the Largent "Power Surge Sale" on November 17. The locals called the wind and snow a real "blizzard." Mark Largent commented that the weather was the worst it had ever been on sale day in more than 35 sales that his family have held in Montana and Wyoming. Photo taken by Jack Chastain.

Barber Elected AHA President
Terri Barber, Channing, TX, was announced as the new president of the American Hereford Association (AHA) during the Annual Membership Meet-ing Oct. 28 in Kansas City, Mo.
Barber has been involved in the Hereford business since birth. Her family owns and operates Barber Ranch, Channing, TX.
“Serving as our AHA president is a prestigious honor that both humbles and inspires me to serve our member-ship in the most effective and enlight-ened way possible,” Barber said. “One of the most rewarding opportunities all members of AHA can experience is serving your membership on the Board of Directors. There’s no better way to learn, grow and contribute to the all-important decision making processes that have and will continue to make our breed prosperous. Special thanks to those who invested your confidence and trust in my leadership when being elected to the Board in 2013 as well as your president this year.”
Founded in 1904, Barber Ranch was a 2004 honoree of the Texas Fam-ily Land Heritage Program for being in continuous family ownership for 100 years. Herefords have been the main-stay of the Barber program since the beginning, with the herd currently consisting of 350 registered females.
Barber said as president, she plans to continue to focus on programs that will help Hereford breeders pro-duce genetics that will benefit from economically relevant traits highly sought in all industry segments. “Our priority in genotyping to identify ge-netics that can build profitability will remain center plate as well as provid-ing our staff and allied leaders the resources to maintain efficiency of member services,” Terri says. “Mar-keting value-based programs will also be a key component to ensuring Herefords are committed to industry demands whereby growing our Cer-tified Hereford Beef (CHB®) brand. Equally important will be supporting our junior members, Hereford Youth Foundation of America and National
Hereford Women affiliates and their unparalleled growth in ensuring the next generation stays committed and successful.”
The Barber family uses exten-sive artificial insemination (AI) and embryo transfer (ET) in their efforts to offer customers the best genetics available. They host an annual bull sale in November in San Saba – the heart of the Texas Hill Country. Show heifer and donor prospects are sold in special sales in the spring and fall. To increase marketing efforts, the Barbers also exhibit at the national shows.
Along with assisting on the ranch as time permits, since 2007 Terri works for Elanco Animal Health as a territory manager in the Southwest region, including El Paso and New Mexico. She has also served as Elan-co’s branded beef marketing associate and has worked directly with premier branded programs in the U.S.
“Every single person involved in our present state of success should be commended and thanked for their contributions in this monumental state of achievements in the Hereford breed,” Barber said.
“While we continue our growth and enviable positioning within the beef industry, we cannot lose sight of the dynamic efforts we have taken to position us where we are today, nor shall we become complacent,” Barber said. “Our breed is in what I would term as the best it’s ever been in my lifetime. It is with great gratitude and respect I thank those who have served on this AHA Board and staff for allowing me, my family and all of us in this rewarding business today to enjoy our livelihoods. I look forward to a phenomenal year of growth, prof-itability and success for all entities involved.” ★

6 TEXAS HEREFORD • December 2016
tailgateTALK By Jack Chastain, Editor
As December approaches it is hard to believe that another year has al-
most passed. Texas Hereford Association has had a good year. Our magazine has printed more ads and more total pages than 2015. Our junior program has pros-pered. Our website continues to help sell cattle and to serve our members. We have recorded well over 167,000 vis-its. Our social media through Facebook now has over 3400 followers and if our juniors and magazine subscribers would
like the page we could reach 5000 before the annual meeting
Most everyone in Texas is rejoicing to see the end of 2016 and wishing for a better year for 2017. Our fall auction sales and private treaty sales were good for the most part, especially consider-ing weather and a depressed commer-cial market to name a few distractions. I would encourage you as breeders to look harder at your sale bulls and keep only the top 75 percent. The demand and re-
newed interest in top Hereford genetics is encouraging for all Hereford breeders and members of THA. For any non THA member, I solicit your membership. I congratulate those who sold Hereford cattle and thank the buyers and wish them well with their purchases.
This organization is strongly dependent on our officers, directors, members, sponsors, and friends in both time and funds. THA is involved in many activities in the next few months and has many people to thank for their support. Your executive committee is most concerned about keeping our organization in a strong financial position. We have had a good year in 2016. THA will again offer some tremendous donations for fund raisers during our Fort Worth activities. On Sunday during our 48th Annual Whiteface replacement heifer sale we will be selling the Heritage Pen of heifers from our commercial Hereford members for the sixteenth year. We owe the donors of this pen a huge thank you for their generosity. I encourage members to help solicit buyers for this pen. I know how good the heifers will develop into cows. We plan a silent auction at the social and are in need of a few quality items from all officers and directors. THA is greatly appreciative for these contributions. I also want to thank the consignors to both the Whiteface replacement heifer and Cowtown Invitational sales. Their quality cattle have a great impact on showing our breed to the general public. The donors for the heifer scholarship and champion awards are also vital to the success of the shows. These members have made a giant effort to ensure great things for THA and Hereford cattle. The rest of THA needs to step up by attending and either buying or bringing buyers to the sales and shows.
December and the time between Thanksgiving and Christmas and the New Year is always a time to pause and reflect on the past year and plan for the upcoming year. I am most thankful for good health and the opportunity to work for THA. I wish everyone a healthy and happy holiday season and prosperous new year. I hope to see everyone at our annual meeting and all other activities not only at the Fort Worth Stock Show but all activities throughout 2017. ★

Jan Rielle is the horned full sister to the Lot 1 Denver HYFA Foundation Female, Kate Rielle, making her a fi tting choice to be offered as the Fort Worth Foundation Female. Jan Rielle is a direct daughter of the famed 2-time NWSS Champion and Supreme, Gabrielle, who for the past decade has been the cornerstone of Barber Ranch, Channing, TX. Besides making great females with high quality udders, Gabrielle daughters have produced cattle that have won a ton of hardware. Just look at the past couple of Denvers: Champion Polled Female in 2015, Champion Horned Bull and Supreme Champion Hereford 2016, as well as Reserve Grand Champion Horned bull for Colyer Herefords in 2016. At Fort Worth it’s been much of the same as well; Champion Polled Female in both 2014 and 2015, Reserve Champion Horned Bull in 2015, Champion Horned Bull in 2016, as well as Champion Polled Bull in 2016 for Colyer Herefords. The consistency of Gabrielle daughters to produce high-end cattle in volume really is remarkable, and here is your chance to acquire 1/2 interest and possession on what will probably be the last Gabrielle daughter to ever enter a sale ring.
