Benguet retains Reg’l Technolympics tilt, places 2nd overall in Math-Science Festival

For the third consecutive year, Benguet retained the overall championship in the Regional Skills Technolympics held November 24-27 in Tabuk City.

Benguet accumulated 128 points to top the skills competitions followed by host Tabuk City which collected 118 points.

Baguio City, which dominated the other events in the Regional Festival of Talents (RFOT), settled for the third place overall with 113 points.

Education Program Supervisor for TLE Samuel Ayangdan proudly an-

nounced after the Division Office person-nel’s flag raising ceremonies on December 2 that Benguet reasserted its supremacy in the different skills competitions involving elementary and secondary learners.

According to Ayangdan, Benguet capped the twin top awards in the second-ary level’s Bazaar Services and Bazaar Products exhibits apart from bagging the first place in the elementary level’s fruit and vegetable carving competition.

Originally called Informing Yearly Accomplishments, Monitoring Assess-ments and Networking (IYAMAN) which was institutionalized since 2016 as a year-ly gathering in each district to celebrate success and strengthen accountability among stakeholders, IYAMAN is now coined as Integrity Yields Accomplish-ments, Modifies Advancement, and Nur-tures excellence.

SDS Daytaca explained that grateful leadership will now be exemplified not-ing that even researches as compiled by Amit Amin in his book Happier Human found the social, emotional, health and career benefits of being grateful.

“Let us make our IYAMAN as the cornerstone of our governance and di-rections as a schools division. Founded on grateful leadership, we ought to be thankful for having countless blessings. To name a few, Benguet is truly blessed for having supportive stakeholders, trust-ed leaders, potential teachers and person-

nel, gifted learners and the like. Let us all capitalize on these and level up by wav-ing our IYAMAN—Integrity Yields Ac-complishments, Modifies Advancement, Nurtures excellence,” the superintendent said.

The launching of IYAMAN became doubly significant after SDO Benguet honored PSDS Suayan for her long years in service to education starting as a class-room teacher in Labilab ES in Itogon to a PSDS who served in Kabayan and Bokod.

PSDS Suayan also served as the Di-vision co-coordinator of the Indigenous Peoples’ Education (IPEd) and Moth-er-Tongue Based Multi-Lingual Educa-tion (MTB-MLE) before her retirement.

Meanwhile, the awarding of school heads, teachers, non-teaching personnel and schools in relation to the Service Ex-cellence for Division Officers and Em-ployees (SEDOE) highlighted the day’s activities. With reports from Rosita Dayag

Provincial Government on December 18 at the Benguet Capitol, SDO Ben-guet awarded plaque of appreciation to the Benguet Officialdom headed by Governor Melchor Diclas and to the provincial heads of offices for their im-portant support to basic education.

Aside from the governor, those present to received their plaque includ-ed Vice Governor Johny Waguis, Board Member Fernando Balaodan, Provin-cial Liga ng mga Barangay President Melchor Guesey, Acting Provincial Ad-ministrator Brian Camhit, Provincial Treasurer Imelda Macanes, Provincial Accountant Lucia Kisim and Provin-cial Budget Officer Tomasa Atayoc.

The convergence resulted to a re-newed partnership between SDO Ben-guet and the Provincial Government towards the implementation of various programs, projects and activities that would uplift the welfare of the Benguet learners.

OIC Schools Division Superin-tendent Benilda M. Daytaca and OIC Assistant Schools Division Superin-tendent Nestor L. Bolayo led the con-tingent of SDO Benguet in their first exclusive convergence with the Provin-cial Government.

Meanwhile, SDO Benguet settled for the first runner-up honors in the Regional Math-Science Festival held in the same city and dates.

According to EPS for Math Wilfred Bagsao, Baguio City outpointed Benguet by a mere point in the overall Math com-petitions. Benguet, however, topped the Mathematics competitions in the elemen-tary level. – with reports from Jayferd Pulac

Wear Your Crown and Say ‘IYAMAN’

Noting how the culture of gratitude is very evident in Benguet, the schools division has embraced this as a gold-en opportunity to make a difference.

Based on records, DepEd Benguet has insti-tutionalized since 2016 what it calls its yearly IYAMAN or Informing Yearly Accomplishments, Monitoring Activities and Networking before internal and external stakeholders in each dis-trict. The yearly gatherings became important avenues in presenting the status of basic ed-ucation in each town and in recognizing the vital contributions of stakeholders like the lo-cal government units, communities, parents, non-government organizations, private entities and individuals. Also considered as the time for the state of basic education address in each district, the practice caught the attention of DepEd CAR which bestowed to SDO Benguet the Most Exemplar Practice in the region this year in recognition of its yearly IYAMAN.

Dwelling on this internal strength, let us make our IYAMAN as the cornerstone of our governance and directions as a schools divi-sion. Founded on grateful leadership, we ought to be thankful for having countless blessings. To name a few, Benguet is truly blessed for

having supportive stakeholders, trusted lead-ers, potential teachers and personnel, gifted learners and the like. Let us all capitalize on these and level up by waving our IYAMAN—In-tegrity Yields Accomplishments, Modifies Ad-vancement, Nurtures excellence.

By continuously being grateful, the ben-efits are enormous. According to the results of more than 40 researches as compiled by Amit Amin in his book Happier Human, grati-tude has a lot of social, emotional, personality, health and career benefits. In terms of social benefits, according to Amin, gratitude results to more friendship, healthier and deeper re-lationship. People expressing gratitude were also found to be more relaxed, more resilient, less envious and have the tendencies to expe-rience good feeling and could recall happier memories. Moreover, grateful people tend to be less materialistic, less self-centered, more op-timistic, have increased self-esteem and more spiritually mature.

In terms of career, grateful individuals tend to experience better management, improved networking, goal achievement, improved deci-sion making and increased productivity. Along with the health benefits of gratitude, embrac-

ing grateful leadership surely creates an at-mosphere for better performance, being pos-itive, and being open to possibilities. With all of these findings, our IYAMAN culture should inspire us in SDO Benguet to exemplify a true service with a heart. After all, we truly believe that Integrity Yields Accomplishments, Modi-fies Advancement, Nurtures excellence. And this is IYAMAN at its best.

Through IYAMAN, we expect to yield the following:

• Innovations and continuous improve-ments • Youth formation in Disaster Risk Reduc-tion Management, research and robotics

• Administrators are actively engaged in School Based Management, responsible Financial and Resource Management • Mobilization and networking with national and international partners • Advancement in human resource develop-ment and administrative process • Nurturing excellence through apprecia-tion, recognition, awards and incentives

The IYAMAN reminds us all to celebrate every Golden Glitter of Glory in Gratitude.

IYAMAN hailed as Exemplar Best Practice, Other major awards bestowed to Benguet

The institutionalized practice of SDO Benguet in gathering its stakeholders in each district to present its yearly accom-plishments and seek their continuous support under the principle of shared accountability and responsibility was awarded as the Most Exemplar Practice in the Cordillera during the Regional Awarding Ceremonies at the DepEd-CAR gym, November 29.

Dubbed as IYAMAN or Informing Yearly Accomplishments, Monitoring As-sessments and Networking activities, the practice was awarded as the most promis-ing practice in 2017 and the Most Validat-ing Practice in 2018.

Rizalyn A. Guznian, Chief of the Cur-riculum Implementation Division (CID) of SDO Benguet who led the conceptual-ization of the practice in 2016, said that the IYAMAN gathering was based on the culture of gratitude of the Benguet people whose sense of community collaborative-ly celebrate good harvest and other bless-ings.

Since its inception in 2016, the annu-al IYAMAN gatherings became avenues for Public Schools District Supervisors/District Heads to present the status of basic education in the district drumming up the continuous commitments among stakeholders.

In the same awarding rites, Benguet capped other major regional awards as follows: Outstanding Supervisor-Sasha Joseph Daganos, Outstanding Level 2 Non-teaching Employee-Nerissa Barbo-sa, Outstanding Secondary School Teach-er-Jardson Onio, Outstanding Secondary School in DRRM-Lepanto National High School, and Outstanding Private School in DRRM-Epiphany Learning Center.

Other finalists included Anfe Calap-en for Level 1 Non-Teaching Employee, Miya Meing for Outstanding Elementary School Head and Loo Elementary School for Best Elementary School.

As result of the validation confer-ence held Novermber 7, 2019, the Mankayan National High School was chosen recipient of the financial assis-tance amounting to PhP 550, 000.00 from the Social Development Man-agement Program (SDMP) of the Lep-anto Consolidated Mining Company.

Realized through the endorsement of the Poblacion Barangay Council, an amount of PhP 50,000.00 shall be used to purchase school needs such as but not

limited to science equipment, computer sets, among others based on priority needs while the PhP 500,000.00 is intended for the repair of one unused school building to be utilized as a school dormitory exclu-sively for female students.

The school noted that the construc-tion of a dormitory, which will be close-ly monitored by a designated personnel , could be part of the measure to avoid teenage pregnancy among students.

This project is also part of the liveli-hood program of LCMC.

PH Red Cross supports WaSH in School

MANGANESE, ITOGON-The Red Cross- Benguet Chapter donated three water tanks worth 130,000.00 purpose-ly for the use of Manganese Elementary School learners.

Red Cross representative Catherine Danao said during the turn over that the procurement of the water tanks was in re-sponse to the request forwarded by Felic-itas S. Mang-osan, school head.

She added that Red Cross acted on the request as their way of supporting the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WaSH) program in school which aims to provide school children a safe water supply for drinking, tooth brushing and hand wash-ing.

The said items were installed at the back of the three buildings through the collaborative efforts of the General PTA Officers and members, parents and teach-ers during the Brigada Plus conducted.

The tanks supply seven classrooms including the Home Economic room and the school canteen. Nine teachers, 219 learners, and parents benefited from the provision of the tanks.

Meanwhile, Danao encouraged the teachers to convince the learners and par-ents to register as a member of the Red Cross of the Philippines to target the 100 percent membership. --Jane D. Dugacan

Korean Grannies perfom dances, songs in Itogon school

The Hepzibah Worship Center For the Nations Group from South Korea per-formed their traditional songs and dance in front of over 700 pupils of Ucab ES last December 9.

At least 748 pupils from Grade 1 to Grade 6, including 23 teachers enjoyed watching the performances of the group. The presentations included a fan dance, basket dance and an interpretative dance, all with a Christian song background. They also sang their traditional music or Jindo Arirang as they call it, with a kore-an drum as an accompaniment.

After their performance, they also gave their gifts to the school which are 2 basketball balls and 2 volleyball balls.

With that, Mrs. Rachel Balacdao, the TIC in the absence of the principal, Sir Jose Gaerlan and Mrs. Cornelia Domagto, the UES Faculty President, expressed the school’s gratitude for choosing Ucab ES as their partner and audience in their pre-sentations.

“The group does this activities as part of their mission here in the Philippines,” said Rev. Judith E. Aniceto, a member of the Itogon Municipal Chaplain, who is their contact person.

It was the second time for the group performing in Ucab ES. This time, the performers were senior citizens while the group who presented last July of this year were mostly children. -- Jeselle Daniel Hamadon

Ucab, Itogon, Benguet – For a while, learners and teachers of Ucab Eementary School here had a glimpse of Korea’s culture through the presentation of a Korean group who performed their traditional dances and songs.

Lessening burden of teachers in lesson planning supported Teachers in Benguet may no longer

need to prepare Daily Lesson Log (DLL) but would instead use DLL exemplars in the future as guide in teaching if the ongoing division-wide collaborative undertaking for this purpose would succeed.

As of December 2, report showed that at least 50% of the targetted learning compe-tencies in the different learning areas were prepared with draft DLL exemplars for quali-ty assurance evaluation. This is in reponse to a previously issued memorandum targetting the preparation and production of DLL Exemplars for use within the divison as one way of lessening the burden of teachers.

Taking a cue from the experience of one division in the Bicol region and based from the recommendations of the Curriculum Im-plementation Division (CID), then Schools Division Superintendent Marie Carolyn Verano issued on July 10 SDO Memoran-dum 187 s. 2019 organizing the committee for the preparation of DLL exemplars in each learning area including Mother Tongue, Kindergarten and the Alternative Learning System (ALS).

Lead by the Education Program Super-visors (EPS) and district heads, each district was assigned a learning area to work on as follows: La Trinidad-Araling Panlipunan; Tublay and Sablan- Edukasyon sa Pagpa-pakatao; Atok- English; Bakun-EPP/TLE; Buguias- Filipino; Itogon I & II-Mathemat-ics; Tuba- Music and Arts; Kapangan-PE and Health; Kibungan-Kindergarten subjects; Mankayan-Science; and Bokod and Ka-bayan-Mother Tongue. The group of ALS facilitators took the challenge to prepare their own DLL exemplars.

As offshoot of the memorandum, the preparation of DLL exemplars became a collaborative endeavor with each teacher expected to contribute at least one or more exemplars, which will be consolidated, re-viewed and quality assured for reproduction later.

The CID spearheaded the first series of quality assurance review of the first batch of submitted DLL exemplars last December 2-3 where it was reported that other districts are still reviewing more outputs.

Based on the pace of actual preparation, the CID exepected to have substantial collec-tions of outputs before the opening of classes next school year.

Once the project materializes, teach-ers could focus their quality time on the preparation of other instructional materials and other interventions to help the learners. MBM

Hindi man sila gaanong kilala, at

Nara-nasan ba nilang magsurvive

KIBUNGAN, Benguet – The Kibun-gan National High School here marked its 36th Foundation Anniversary last October 31 with Vice Governor Johny Waguis as the guest of honor and speaker.

With the theme, “Strengthening Stakeholders’ Partnership towards Ed-ucational Excellence,” Waguis empha-sized the importance of the participation of different partners in the attainment of the school’s noble goals.

Before hundreds of students, teach-ers, parents and local officials compris-ing the members of the Sangguniang Bayan, the vice governor pointed out that the celebration became opportune time to give credits to those people who worked hard for the establishment and operations of the school enabling it to produce a number of promising gradu-ates over the years.

By Lorelie D. Balanag ordinated to DepEd Benguet, the seminar was maximized purposely for the teach-er-coaches of the province to prepare for the Provincial Athletic Meet on Decem-ber 8-12 and other higher competitions like CARAA Meet.

This is to improve performance of the teacher-coaches in leading their athletes to perform better because based from last years’ result, Benguet Division ranked fourth during the regional athletic meet, two places down from its original stand-ing in the previous year.

The university and the division of-fice came up with this activity as an off-shoot of the recommendation from the post CARAA assessment conference that coaches still need to enhance and rebuild their coaching and conditioning strategies to their athletes.

As part of its advocacy to disseminate and uti-lize research results conducted in the division, the School Governance and Operations Division together with the Curriculum and Implementa-tion Division in partnership with the Province of Benguet held its 1st School Division of Ben-guet Learners and Teachers Research Confer-ence on October 21-23, 2019 at Teachers Camp, Baguio City.

In line with this, senior high schools all over the division of Benguet were enjoined to submit student researches for screening and as a result, all four submitted student researches of La Trinidad National High School were accepted for presentation during the said event.

“Encountering Ghouls: The Fears and Coping Mechanisms of Transfer Students” is a re-search conducted by the group of Celia Dondon, Eugene L. Gamboa, Cynthia Ross C. Nasingao, Mark Jimbber D. Velano that looked into the fears faced by transfer students in their new environ-ment and what coping mechanisms they used to deal with these fears. Results showed that transfer students feared rejection from school mates, the requirements and the strict rules and regulations of the new school. Coping mechanisms employed were one of self- reflection and relying on their classmates and friends.

The second research is entitled “The BIG Impact of Teacher Compliment to Students’ Academic Performance” by Maribel C. Balan, Shanel Diwani B. Laro, and Kristine Monique D. Velano. The research delved into how teachers’ compliments affect performance of the students with BIG as an acronym representing the results of Boosting confidence, Influencing development, and Giving motivation.

“The Cs of Giving and Receiving Face-book Reactions: Exploring their Meanings and Effects” is the third research paper presented with Ronald D. Condaya, Marve A. Deli, and Clarence

SHS joins 1st Benguet Research ConfabBy Rachel B. Basalong

S. Estangki as authors. This research delved into the reasons why grade 10 male students give cer-tain Facebook reactions and what are the effects of receiving Facebook reactions. Results of the study showed that the participants gave reactions to champion (to show support), to convey (to rep-resent how you expressed the current emotion you felt from the post), and to commend (to show your appreciation towards someone’s post). In receiving reactions, participants were affected which is rep-resented by three C’s (Creates negativity, Crush or Compound Self-esteem, Cultivate Positivity). Cre-ates negativity speaks of when receiving negative reaction, it creates negative emotions for receivers

about themselves. Cultivate positivity means that receiving positive reaction can also bring positive emotions or positive outlooks about themselves. Crush or Compound Self-esteem refers to how re-ceiving reactions can also increase or decrease the self-esteem of a person.

Jackylyn I. Amado, Von Novemor R. Dangatag, and Marian M. Gambulao conducted a research entitled “Relighting the Candle of Faith of Terminally Ill Patients: The PAVE Method” explor-ing the method used by pastors to help terminally ill patients back to their faith. Results showed that pastors used the PAVE method with P for praying, A for asking, V for visiting and E for encouraging. Accordingly, this method is effective as many of their counseled terminally ill members went back to worship with them.

These researches were conducted by the stu-dents in their Practical Research I: Qualitative Re-search subject.

Practical Research I and II are required ap-plied subjects in the Senior High School curricu-lum where students are introduced to qualitative and quantitative researches respectively and are taught the processes of conducting researches un-der the two approaches. This culminates with the last subject for research which is Inquiries, Investi-gation and Immersion where learners are expected to produce a fully conducted research.

The conference aimed to a strengthen the ad-vocacy of combined learners and teachers results as basis for planning and policy recommenda-tion not limited to the field of education, to guide learner and teacher researchers in the continuous conduct or implementation of quality researchers in the division through recommendations and sug-gestions from expert, and to develop and improve teachers and learners public speaking and partici-pation in conferences for more opportunities; and d. to improve the culture of research in the division by aligning it to the changes brought about by ad-vances in research process and standards.

Grade 12 student Cynthia Nasingao presents her research before panelists 1st School Di-vision of Benguet Learners and Teachers Re-search Conference on October 21-23, 2019 at Teachers Camp, Baguio City.

Early Language, Literacy and Numeracy (ELLN) program through School-based Learning Action Cell (SLAC) is one of the interventions from Kinder to Grade 3 of the K to 12 Basic Education Program. ELLN program is a component of Learning Equity and Ac-countability Program Support (LEAPS) or Project Leaps funded by the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (BRD LEAP). The study aimed to monitor the implementation and impact of the said pro-gram in Benguet. The study involved five (5) districts with 20 schools in each district.

The study used a quantitative survey design – close-ended questionnaire. The questionnaire was pilot tested. Cronbach’s Alpha was used and yielded a score of 9.0 for reliability and validity. Stratified and simple random techniques were used in selecting the respon-dents after subjecting the population to Slovin’s formu-la for sampling. Before floating the questionnaire, the strand-operating procedure was followed and permis-sion from the Schools Division Superintendent down to the respondents was obtained.

Mentoring Through School-Based Learning Action Cell of Early Language, Literacy and Numeracy: An Evaluation Research

The level of agreements of school heads on the rel-evance of the implementation of the ELLN program on learners’ development was above the researcher’s basic assumption with a score of 2.51 – 3.25 to 3.75, which is described as strongly agree. A significant difference on agreement of school heads along the 15 indicators was recorded in 5 indicators namely: a) It serves as an area to learn new things needed in the classroom; b) It serves as an area to relearn concepts, which were forgotten or taken for granted in teaching; c) It aids in addressing roles and responsibilities of teachers and school heads for students development; d) Students will learn more if their teachers regularly engage in continuous profes-sional development; and e) It gives creative and innova-tive ideas for teachers to deliver their lessons.

Results showed that the ELLN implementation in five districts varied. The school heads performance on pedagogical knowledge, skills and attitude after and during the conduct of phase 3 ELLN-SCLACs were

above the researcher’s basic assumptions of 1to 2 level of improvement and no significant difference was not-ed, which means that the teaching and learning prac-tices were improved and enhanced on daily routine work of teachers and school heads. School heads were better equipped to help their teachers and point out where they might improve because of what they learned through the ELLN-SLACs. On the other hand, the is-sues or problems encountered by teachers and school heads in the pre-implementation, implementation and post-implementation stages were almost the same. The data showed that school heads and teachers have com-mon issues or problems; thus there is a need for them to work and support each other to address the issues or problems. This enhanced camaraderie among teachers and school heads within schools/districts/division.
