GSPC of MN Fall Walking Trial at Four Brooks WMA Aug 31/Sept 1 2013
For the first time ever holding a walking trial in the fall wasn’t too bad. We had 49 dogs entered and 49 dogs ran. The
weather was in the 80’s on Saturday but that didn’t affect the handlers or the dogs. We started off the day with the Open Gun
Dog. The weather was nice and cool in the morning.
A BIG thank you to the Judges for coming out during a holiday weekend: Dan Voss, Becky Voss, Dan Erickson Dave Carl-
son and Todd Piechowski. Really can’t have a trial without them and their experience.

We decided to stop after that since the weather was a little hot and the next day was to be cooler. At that time everyone did
their chores and then off to Rough Cuts for our judges dinner. The next day we started the trial with the OLGD. The weather
was a lot cooler and it was a perfect day to run dogs.

All in all this trial was a hit. We were a little worried about if the weather was going to be hot. But it turned out pretty nice. I
just want to say thank you to Eileen and Carlos Gust from the MN Brittany Club for helping out with the food and cooking
for us. It is always nice to see members from another club helping out. A BIG thank you to John Zeman for being my chair
along with helping me with my secretary duties. Without him I would have been lost. Thank you also John for being the
chief bird planter along with Becky Voss for helping him. Also to Chris Benskin for answering my many questions about the
paperwork and how to go about starting this trial. Since this was my first time as a secretary I found there was a lot of stuff I
needed to learn. It was a great experience and I am glad that I took it on. I encourage all members of the club to try some-
thing new. Like that saying goes… “ you can’t knock it till you try it”!!!!
It was nice to see some new people trying it out for the first time. Jon Thielen a new member of the club came out with his
dog Lexi and placed 2nd in the Open Puppy for the first time. Congratulations to him and Lexi. We look forward to seeing
him again.
One thing I tried was having a drawing for 2- $25.00 gift certificates from Gun Dog Supply . Thank you Gun Dog Supply.
The winners of that were Carlos Gust and Chuck Goede ( another new GSP owner of Rosie). A big thank you to Loyall for
donating the bags of dog food to the 1st place stake winners.
If I have missed anyone I apologize and keep in mind your volunteering is much appreciated.
Thank you,
Kelly Ashton

First Morning of the Trial
German Shorthaired Pointer Club of MN
General Membership Meeting, September 10, 2013
Meeting was called to order at 7:02 pm with the reading of the previous meetings minutes. Minutes were
approved, with corrections to the Board Meeting Minutes, regarding Kelly Ashton was approved as Secre-
tary of the Fall Walking Field Trial. Also, a correction by Chris Benskin, that he is still willing to remain
Treasurer if re-elected after his term is over end of this year.
Report of the President – Russ Killian Thank you to all the faithful members who have made all the events a success and all the hard work
everyone does at the events that we hold.
Report of the Secretary – Donna Schauer
Request for a delegate to attend the National Field Trial for the GSP Club, if anyone is attending and
would like to be a delegate and represent the club please contact Donna Schauer. There were a few
suggested names to contact.
Treasurer – Chris Benskin
We have 8933.83 in the account and Rescue is -480.82. We have received the check from Lake Min-
netonka Kennel Club and Chris will have the financial report for the next meeting.
Updates
Fall Walking Field Trial Ran 49 dogs, the weather was very hot on Saturday but all the dogs were ok, and no one was over-
heated. Sunday was a much better day. We did have our tent blown away but other than that the
event was successful. The event made 251.61. There were 2, $25 gift cards given to attendees in a
drawing.
Game Fair
Game Fair was a success for the club and we gave out many applications for membership and met
many people. The Game Fair organizers are getting more adamant about discouraging families and
friends to use club entries to get into the grounds. They are only for members working the tent.
They may be stricter next year.
Show Committee
Chris has received the check from Lake Minnetonka Kennel club and he will have the final financials
for the next meeting.
Fall Hunt Test
The Hunt Test will be held this weekend September 14th and 15th. We have 67 or 68 entries. It is com-
ing all together; we still need to confirm the food, and judge’s dinner. There are a few other issues
to resolve. Russ is going to confirm with the judges, and Chris will be sending the necessary
checks to Karin. There have been a few complaints that the event is being held on the opening
weekend of Grouse and Bow season but we really didn’t think it affected entries. We do not yet
know which fields are going to be in, that will be determined at the meeting Wednesday night. We
are all set for gunners too.
Training Day
Training day was held August 24th. It was not well attended and it was very hot that day. Due to being
so close to school being back in, the hot weather, and State Fair going on could have affected par-
ticipation.
Horseback Trial –
Trying to finalize dates, considering moving to the last weekend of April to avoid any potential snow
issues.
Spring Horseback Trial –
We do not have a Chairperson yet for this event on Memorial Weekend. If you are interested please
contact one of the board members.
Spring Hunt Test
Nothing has been done on it yet, will get going on it shortly.
New Members – We had 5 new member applications and all were approved.
Bob St. Pierre – White Bear Lake, MN
Greg Vogel – Andover, MN
Christina Franzen – Pillager, MN
Paul Sikora – N. St. Paul, MN
Jon Theilen, Wyoming, MN
New Business
Chris Benskin suggested that as a club we consider joining and supporting Pheasants Forever. We decided
it was a good idea, and John will look into it.
As a group we would really like to thank John Zeman for taking on the training days, they have really been
successful and have exposed the club to new members.
The subject was brought up on the possibility on the website of doing hunt/field trial entries online. Chris
said that it would be possible to pay online but would still need to have the entry form submitted via paper
or email. Chris is going to use the Spring Horseback Trial as a test on seeing if it will work successfully.
Formed the nomination committee for voting for board seats for January, Kelly Ashton agreed to be the
Chair, along with Dick Greeman, we are looking for a third. The seats that are open are Treasurer, Chris
Benskin, Secretary, Donna Schauer; Board Seats up for vote are John Zeman, and Janelle Elfstrand. Due
to the timing of the newsletters, we will be mailing out a postcard notification of the Board nominees once
they are determined.
Meeting was adjourned at 8:15 pm
The club has decided to move locations of our Membership meeting to Mad Jacks Sports Café located in Brooklyn Park, MN.
8078 Brooklyn Blvd Brooklyn Park, MN 55445 www.madjacksportscafe.com
Even though we appreciate the many years at Kelly’s on Boone, moving locations is necessary for adding the capability of teleconferencing of our meetings.
The dates of meetings have been reserved and will remain the same.
Board Meeting Minutes, September 10, 2013
Meeting called to order at 8:34pm
Old Business
Changing location is successful. The restaurant is very helpful and we really enjoyed the new menu
and better atmosphere.
Rescue, this area of our club does hold its own and is profitable. Over the time in existence it has been
successful, once in a while we have a challenge dog, and we will recover from this and move on to
the next dog we decide to rescue. Janelle is going to touch base with Jill to see how things are go-
ing.
New Business
Reminder that we are nearing the end of the year and we still need to fill the newsletter and Show Chair
positions in our club.
We encourage members in the Twin City area to attend the meetings if they can, and we also encourage
outstate members to call in on the conference line too. We still have a few kinks on internet speed
but we should be able to work these things out.
New Life Time Member up for vote next meeting in November
Karin Greeman submitted written nomination of Jim Morgel for a Lifetime Membership.
To the Board of the GSPCMN
I would like to nominate Mr. Jim Morgel for induction as a lifetime member in the GSPCMN. Jim has
served as a member, Board Member and officer for in excess of 24 years. Jim has worked as an ambassa-
dor for the club, bringing enthusiasm, energy, and expertise which have impacted not only our club but the
breed itself. As a trainer-handler, he has trained 3 Master Hunters, one senior hunter, one amateur field
champion, and one field champion. Jim deserves our recognition for his contributions.
Respectfully Submitted,
Karin Greeman
We will vote in the November Meeting on Lifetime Member and nominations for Board Member posi-
tions. Please attend the meeting if you can.
Meeting adjourned at 8:54 pm.
