The completion of our third and last Driver’s Education event at Mid-Ohio begins the last phase of our Porsche season. That’s the bad news – the good news is that we still have a number of events on our agenda for the remainder of the year and that our track programs have been a great success.

Our DE at PIRC (formally BeaveRun) was a sold out event with many new participants (as usual) and thanks to our Chief Instructors (Bruce Graham, Ralph Guidio and Larry Pryor, Jr.) and their instructors, we were able to put on a quality, safe event. I also want to thank Scott (SMORES) Mores for chairing this event (his first time as chair) and his assistants. The event was made even more successful by having a Saturday evening “pig roast” after the day’s driving. This part of the event came off thanks to the efforts of Melinda Clark – it was her idea to do this and I know that many of the drivers, instructors and members enjoyed the conversations and the food.

Once again our Mid-Ohio DE was a near sold our event was a great success. Because of the quality of our instructors and the smoothness of our organization of our track events, we are fortunate to have sellouts at our DE’s and I know many other regions are somewhat envious. I have been told many times by “outsiders” that we put on the best track events in the area – and probably PCA. Our DE was chaired by Dale Rabaneck who also acts as Track Chair and is instrumental in making our track and social events by creating an on-line registration package.

Coming up, we still have one Auto Cross event – see our website for details. As I’ve mentioned before I am extremely thankful to Rob Hoffman and Scott Mores for initiating and bringing back this venue. Again for those members that are not ready yet to put your Porsche on a race track; the Auto X events is a safe (please note the cover of last month’s newsletter – it illustrates that the worst thing that can happen is that you may/probably will hit a rubber cone) and inexpensive way to test out the performance of your car. These events also create some “friendly” competition among

our participants which adds to the comradely in our club.

Also coming up is our next rally created and chaired by Iron Jack Purvis and Frank Bunecicky. There going to put in a new wrinkle with a “Poker Run” type of venue. Again if you never been on one of our rallies – you should. It’s not really a competitive venue and again you’ll probably meet some new Porsche folks and we always have a great meal and socializing and the conclusion of the rally.

Our last social event of the season will be our Porsche Prom chaired by Sandy Zilenski at the Wildwood Country Club. This is always an enjoyable time – mostly because our ladies (and gents) get to dress up in a non-pretentious environment. Once again our DJ will be Charlie Apple who always has a great repertoire of music and will take request for your favorite song.

A new event this year will be a “Shine and Dine” on October 14th at the Cranberry Wild Wings restaurant. The restaurant specially invited us to show off our cars and better yet they will donate ten per cent of our food purchases to our charities. Also this is a non-Steelers’ Sunday, so there really is a reason not to show up. Again details will be on our website.

Some more good news – Jason Monyok has agreed to be our new “Tourmeister”. I don’t know if he will have time to create a tour for this season, but it is great to know and look forward to having some great drives. Our tours have been extremely popular in the past, so I look forward to seeing you and your Porsches traveling some through some of our great scenery.

There have been a number of members asking about our annual trek and brunch at Nemacolin. The board and members decided not to do our event this year. Last year, we had less than average turnout and the resort also requested a guarantee (which we didn’t meet) so this was a money losing effort. I am hopeful that we can find someone to chair this event in 2013, because it is a quality experience and hopefully we can return this event to our schedule

Coming up in the next issue, you’ll notice our ballot for our 2013 officers. You’ll also notice a familiar

Let’s see…a fried egg sandwich, corn on the cob with the husk pealed back dripping in butter, locally made brats grilled to perfection, and don’t forget the steamed clams! Is this some kind of exotic diet? No, it’s just some of the “track” food we have enjoyed over the years.

When we bought the 993, Ken thought it would be fun to start going to vintage races at Mid-Ohio, Watkins Glen and Nelson Ledges. Fine with me since I had not been to any of these tracks lately and when we last visited, it wasn’t to watch vintage cars. What I did remember about the tracks was the yummy food offerings.

We were quietly munching our breakfast of fried egg sandwiches at a picnic table at Mid-Ohio which we shared with 2 other fans. As each car drove past, one guy would comment to the other, “Remember my Jag. It was just like that one”. Next would be “Remember my red Mazda, it was just like that one.” This went on for quite a while until I just couldn’t stand it anymore and asked, “What kind of car haven’t you had!” This started a conversation and we ended up sitting with these two guys to watch the race. Next time we were at Mid-Ohio, you guessed it, we ran into them again. To make a 10-year long story short – the two guys are Gary Downer and Reg Mills – two of our Canadian buddies! It all started with a fried egg sandwich and has turned into a wondrous friendship that includes wives, mothers, and family members. I am as comfortable in Gary and Mary-Lou’s kitchen as I am in my own and the same can be said for them in our kitchen. It’s great when they are visiting because in the morning, I know the coffee will be made and the newspaper will be waiting on the kitchen table.

The second year we owned our Porsche, Ken was itching to drive again after a long winter for the car in garage prison. The first available event was the Hershey Swap Meet. Yes, chocolate! It’s not too far and yet

far enough to really enjoy the car again. We were off with reservations made at a hotel near town. After we arrived on Friday night we decided to take a walk and see what the town offered in the way of dinner. There was a nice restaurant that looked inviting so we took a chance. Since it was Friday night at dinner time the place was packed. Not to worry – the bar offered a couple of empty stool so we sat down and ordered a beer. We ended up sharing the corner of the bar with two guys – again! – who were wearing Porsche clothing. Naturally, we struck up a conversation and ended up talking for hours while enjoying dinner. Next year at the Hershey Swap Meet, we were walking across a parking lot and heard “Hey, Kenny!” yup, it was the same two guys. Again, we spent the evening with them. These two turned out to be Brian Starksy and Dan Deagan – two of our Rochester buddies! We have since been to numerous Zippo Races at the Glen, where we get the chance to slurp down steamed clams while walking the streets of Watkins Glen on Fri-day before the Zippo Race. We have also been to Brian and Terri’s Chili Run which includes a tour of Letchworth State Park – awesome scenery. In turn, last year we had four Rochester Porsches at the Vintage Grand Prix. Nice!

Do you see a theme here? From chance meetings over food, we have met and developed friendships with some wonderful people. For some reason, we just have lots of common and now see each other without “Porsche” being the reason for the meeting. I would encourage both new Porschephiles and folks who have owned their cars for a while to try new venues either with the club or try whatever your community might offer in the way of car cruises or static displays. Hopefully, you will be as lucky as we have been and make some wonderful friendships – all because of food and Porsches!

First of all, I’d like to thank Frank Bunecicky for all his help as co-editor of the Rundschau. Frank has been co-editor with me for about a year, and has decided to “retire”. THANKS FRANK!!! Frank will still be our Rally Planner so stay tuned.

This is actually my second attempt as Editor for the ARPCA’s newsletter. I took over the job back around 1998 when the Rundschau was 8 ½ x 14 on plain paper, folded in half, and printed in black only. At that time the job of the editor was collecting input from the members, researching other articles on the web or from PCA as well as actually doing the layout with Pagemaker, getting it printed at Kinko’s, putting on the stamps, and driv-ing from the South Hills to Warrendale, PA to mail it out to our members. After a few months it was suggested that we get some “Professional Help” with the layout so we hired a Graphic Artist to assist. Gary and I took the Rundschau from that 8 ½ x 14 folded paper to an 8 ½ x 11 Color publica-tion that I was very proud of. Nancy Lowe, with Gary’s help then moved the publication to an even better product over her years as Editor. When Nancy decided to move on, I was asked to again try my hand at Editor. With help of Frank and assistance of Rob Hoffman doing layout, and Paul Nickoloff printing and mailing, the Rundschau has now become something we can all be proud of.

I intend to stay on as your Editor and respectfully request that if anyone has any comments, questions, or even negative comments, PLEASE get them to me ASAP so they can be addressed. I want to thank those folks that have taken the time to submit articles, pictures, and stories of their Porsche experiences. The Rundschau is supposed to be a News Letter for and about our members….GET INVOLVED!

Looking forward to the Wine and Dine at Stone Villa Winery coming up on September 22nd as well as a really fun Rally scheduled for October 6th. You will not be disappointed!! Remember also, I’ll be picking out some folks to “Interview” at these events. PLEASE NOTE MY CORRECT e-mail address [email protected]. Fourth gear, Fifth gear, I’m ‘outta here! ~ Iron Jack

name missing --- mine and it’s about time. I feel strongly that our club needs new leadership and I know the individuals nominated will do a great job in making our organization even stronger. I hope you will all take the time to vote which really does show how much you enjoy the club.

I also want to thank Diane and Paul Nickoloff for the use of their estate for September’s monthly business meeting. The meeting itself was very productive and the “after party” was even more fun. We need your input, so please plan on attending one of our meetings – you’ll enjoy yourself – especially if you participate.

Before I sign off for this month’s issue, I want to comment on the quality of our newsletter. Creating and publishing the Runshau is the most difficult and challenging task offered in our club. Nancy Lowe really began taking our publication into a quality piece of work. Now co-editors Iron Jack Purvis, Frank Bunecicky, layout guru Rob Hoffman and publisher Paul Nickoloff have taken our publication to new heights and they do this by putting in a lot of time and effort. If you see them or meet them, please thank them for their efforts – they deserve your praise.

Please contact me with your ideas, comments and suggestions – you’re not going to have much more time to do so.

Midlife Crisis? Every Day Sports Car? Concours Winner? Yes! All That and MORE!!Last Summer I was having a midlife crisis. I was in desperate need

of a cool flashy car to enjoy the summertime. I did my research and checked out tons of good cars, but none of them really clicked. A very close friend of mine suggested the Porsche 911. It sounded great, but there was a problem; my kids needed a place to ride. He said to buy one with backseats. So I started my hunt. On Father’s Day, 2011 I found a Guards Red vintage 1986 911 Targa in Butler. It was owned by an older couple who didn’t really use it much. After my wife and I drove it we were hooked. I ask her, “Kelly what do you think?” She thought it was the best car she had ever driven. That’s all it took. Monday I was the proud owner of a vintage Porsche 911. After a major clean and polish I loaded up Kelly, Olivia, and Madison and we went for Ice cream. It was

so much fun. We all had fun riding around with the top off and the air on. (Yes the air in a 911 that actually works; a miracle.) After that any where we would go all I would hear was “Can we take the red car” Yes we can. So all over Peters Twp. we go, to Soccer, Cross Country, Dance, the Pool and anywhere in between. On the 1st day of school what did I hear, “Daddy can you drive me to school?” Sure I said. “In the Red Car?” Of course! If I don’t need to put on the top, I don’t. The car gets driven about 3 to 5 days a week. We all just love it.

At the Porsche Club New Member Dinner last spring I won tickets to the PVGP. Ken told me to get there early and I followed his instructions. Arriving at 9:30 am I pulled up and ran in to Iron Jack. He said “are you in the Concourse?” I ask “Is the parking better?” He said “Yes.” Being the ever opportunist I said “Sure I am in the Concourse.” I thought to myself this should be good for a laugh, all these spectacular perfect Porsches and my driver that I use as a part time taxi and part time school bus. After walking all over hill and dale my friend and I used the Wing as our picnic table for lunch. When people would give us a strange look for eating lunch off the wing I would say “Oh is this your car?” Unfortunately after lunch we had to go and weren’t able to stick around for prizes.

When I got the Rundschau in the mail I was shocked to see that I won 1st place in my class. I couldn’t believe it. I thought it was a joke. I called my dad to see if his Rundschau said the same thing, and it did, and now for the good part. I called George Patterson and asked him; “Did I win a ribbon or something?” He said I get a Trophy. He said come to the next business meeting and it will be there for you. I went to the Sewickley Car Store for the next business meeting, all excited to get my Trophy and guess what. No Trophy! I think it was a ploy to get to get me to attend the meeting, write an article and take some pictures.

So now that I wrote an article and took some pictures can I please have my trophy? My Kids are starting to doubt I actually won.

IT’S BAAAAAAAAAACK!!!! The After-Race Party is back (and without Reggae music)! After a delightful DE (Drivers Education) day at Pittsburgh International

Race Complex (formerly BeaveRun), only the privileged who signed up for dinner were wined, dined and “desserted”. Saturday evening began in the comfortable, yet casual, Pitt Racing Dining room adorned with classy black table cloths and creative race tire centerpieces topped with checkered flags. Cold beverages flowed freely as dinner included sodas and water. The BYOB concept provided more than enough of what everyone needed too. The air was filled with exciting conversation and “fish-stories” by experienced and novice drivers alike about turn one triumphs and turn nine nightmares! They talked about engines and models (911’s, 914’s, 924’s, 944’s, 991’s, and 997’s), horsepower, apexes along with yellow, black, and checkered flags. Most exciting was just about everyone in the room not only understood the conversation, but came back with their own exciting experiences. It was refreshing to talk racing lingo with other Porsche and race enthusiasts instead of directly going home end of day and trying to convince family and friends that 911 is not a bad thing!

Dinner was provided my Chahine Boulos, (pronounced sha-heen). His organization, Specialty Concessions, provides food for The Vintage Grand Prix, The Pittsburgh Arts Festival, Pitt Race, along with many other venues. He was kind enough to go out on a limb and provided a fabulously delicious dinner consisting of penne pasta, meatballs with tomato sauce, fresh rolls, crispy garden salad, baked beans, and theme of the party, “pulled pork”. Not only did they provided us with drinks, they also took care of set up and cleaned up, and provided paper

products all for a very reasonable price. We are hoping to get him back next year for another memorable event.

The evening’s dessert bakers were generous volunteers inspired by a prize of “goodie store stuff” for the best “people’s choice” dessert. Advertised theme was “Chix Bring Desserts”. However, since our talented male entry, Bob Briggs, provided us with a heavenly Blackberry Limoncello Trifle, we will gladly title the next event: “Chix and Dudes bring Desserts”! At first, there was a three way tie between Bob’s Trifle, Melissa Hoffman’s Bananas Foster, Triple Black cupcakes, and Rachel Rabeneck’s Limoncello cupcakes. After more voting and tasting, Missie’s Bananas Foster cupcakes deserved first place. Rachel came in a close second and Bob placed third. That’s not to say other participant entries were not as delicious and appreciated as it was really a close contest. Louise Jeremiah provided delicious caramel corn and Liz Hronek with the biggest Apple Pie. “Wow, how did you bake such a big apple pie?” “I didn’t”, she replied, “Costco did!”…disqualified! But, truly appreciated and enjoyed by everyone. Judi Seiler brought Apricot and Raspberry Kolacky cookies, courtesy of Sam’s Club. Yes, disqualified from competition too though certainly enjoyed. Terri Mattock (Tiny T) brought a bottle of Dessert Wine saying the word “dessert” in name qualified her. Had the wine made it further than their table for taste testing, it might have! Thanks to all for providing delicious desserts and BYOB spirits. Please plan to attend next year’s “PIG ROAST” and start planning your dessert recipes or renewing your Sam’s/Costco memberships!

Editor note: Thanks Melinda for sponsoring a fantastic club event! Whether or not you participate in ARPCA’s fantastic DE events in 2013, definitely plan on attending the Pig Roast.

    ALL THINGS PORSCHE

According to a recent report from Reuters, German carmaker Porsche expects production of its new Macan compact sports utility vehicle to reach 75,000 by the end of 2013.

Porsche’s procurement chief Uwe-Karsten Staedter is said to have informed suppliers that production at its Leipzig factory will be ramped up from an initially forecast 45,000 vehicles to 75,000 by the end of next year, German weekly WirtschaftsWoche said, without citing sources.

As the fifth Porsche model line, the Macan is a central plank of Strategy 2018, by which the sports car manufacturer wishes to expand its model portfolio. Porsche intends the Macan to emulate the success of the Cayenne. The SUV will start coming off the production lines in Leipzig in 2013. Porsche has recently announced the Leipzig plant is growing and gearing up for production of the new Porsche Macan. To that end, the site in this city in Saxony is being expanded into a fully-fledged production plant including body assembly line and paint shop – with 500 million euro of investment one of the biggest building projects in Porsche’s corporate history

Brumos Perseveres Despite Unlucky Break at Laguna Seca

After dominating at Laguna Seca in 2011 with pole position and a race win, anticipation ran high as Brumos returned to scenic Monterey, California for this season’s event. Although hoping to duplicate their previous success, it quickly became apparent that the team faced a tougher challenge for 2012. Despite initial struggles with set-up, progressive improvements were made, enabling Leh Keen to turn the fastest lap in the final pre-race practice session. Andrew Davis put the Brumos #59 Porsche 911 GT3 on the 2nd row with a strong 3rd place qualifying effort. Pit stops were fast and strategy on target as Davis closed out his stint and the car was handed off to Leh Keen. Keen was making a strong run and led the race for 9 laps, but the car developed severe handling problems, making it impossible to mount a serious challenge. Strategy with fuel played out perfectly, with the #59 going on reserve on the final lap, enabling Brumos to hold on for a 6th place finish. The result allowed Brumos to remain in 5th place in the team championship standings, narrowing the gap to within 12 points of 2nd with one race remaining for 2012.Leh Keen described the weekend as a tough one, saying,

“The guys worked really hard. We didn’t come off the truck that well, but every change we made was a positive, so hats off to the crew for that. Andrew did a great job in his stint, keeping us up front. Then, when I got in the car, we were running well and keeping pace, but at the end of my first stint, the car just dropped off. The tires were starting to go away, but the car became really difficult. We came in and took new tires, so I was expecting to see improvement, but it was never there for me again. There was no grip - the car was unbalanced with understeer and push. After the race we found a problem with the rear sway bar which certainly made a big difference. This track is really hard on the undercarriage in different parts of the course, especially in the corkscrew where there is an extreme amount of compression. So it was a difficult weekend all around, but we’ll be working hard and we’ll be ready for a big finish.”For Andrew Davis, finishing in the top ten was a positive,

but not all that he had hoped for at Laguna Seca. “Since this was the site of our great victory last year, it was obviously disappointing that we didn’t repeat,” he said. “Over the long run we just didn’t have quite the car we had last year. Brumos was the only team that actually stretched the fuel out to that last minute, so I was happy with how well our strategy played out, but unfortunately, the pace just wasn’t in the car for us to challenge for the win. Leh drove a great closing stint and we came away with some good points, so I’m proud of the effort everyone put forth. When you struggle to find pace from the beginning you have to push really hard, but our guys never gave up fighting. It is always good to have Brumos behind you, because you know you are going to get the best effort. Now with one race to go we are running out of time for a victory this year, so we’ll focus on the next race and we will give it our all.”

PORSCHE TECH - WINTER STORAGE By Duane Smith

    Proper Storage of Your Porsche

It is getting to that time of the year when we start thinking about

putting our toys away for winter. Here are some suggestions for doing

    so properly:

A question I get asked from time to time is: “Should I change my oil

before I put my car away or when I get it out in spring?” I recommend

putting any vehicle away with fresh oil. Changing your oil before

storage ensures you get contaminates out which would otherwise

likely be covering your critical engine components such as crankshaft

and bearings during extended periods of non-use. It is also one less

thing you have to worry about after a long winter when the weather

breaks and you want to start driving your baby again.

My next suggestion would be to thoroughly wash and put a good

coat of wax on your car. Start by washing the car then prepping the

paint for wax by clay barring the exterior paint. The clay bar process

strips any old wax plus it removes any contaminates on the surface of

your paint. Make sure to follow up with a good coat of your favorite

    wax.

Now we want to protect our tires. It is best to clean the tires really

well. We want to remove any kind of tire shine as most products

contain chemicals which extract the agents in your tires designed to

prevent dry rot. Movement from rotation and heat which occurs while

driving on your tires helps to keep them healthy and ply-able. Driving

on your tires helps counter-act tire shine chemicals from drying out

the rubber making up your tires.

After cleaning your car, wheels, tires, and waxing it; take it for a

final drive. Drive at least 15 miles to get the engine up to operating

temperature. This also ensures we get any excess water out from the

cleaning process. Towards the end of your drive, stop at a gas station

and fill up to help prevent condensation from forming in your gas

tank. Buy a bottle of gas stabilizer and add it to your tank when you

    return home.

Once the tires are clean we want to pump up the pressure to 50psi.

Over inflating tires decreases the size of contact patch and helps

minimize flat spotting (from not being driven). I also recommend

during storage to push the car forward or back an inch every other

week. Doing so also helps to prevent flat spots.

Porsche strongly recommends NOT starting your car unless it is

going to be driven at least 15 miles. Starting your car and just letting

it idle creates condensation inside the engine. It takes at least 15

miles of driving to get enough heat into the engine to burn off

that condensation. So if you do not plan to drive your car do not

start it. Otherwise you will be doing more harm than good as the

condensation will just be sitting in your engine. Not good.

Now that you have your tires inflated to 50psi, move your car into its

storage location in your garage. Do one final wipe down with a damp

    chamois or California Duster.

Next, plug in a Porsche Battery Maintainer. There are many different

kinds of battery maintainers out there but I have found Porsche

ones work best. Aside from being extremely simple to use, they plug

into the cigarette lighter socket and have a long thin cord which

fits between the door and door seal (so you do not have to leave a

window down). Then plug the maintainer into a wall outlet and it will

turn on and off as needed. Just set it and forget it.

Finally put a cover on your car and she is ready for hibernation!
