Utah County Chapter

In December, The Utah County Chapter hosted anannual Christmas party and jam.  Members werepleased to see Jarl Jacobson, Lynn Brighton and bigJohn Harman in attendance for this event. I would liketo thank them for supporting the Utah CountyChapter.  Jarl helped me present an award to RheaJean Hancock for appreciation for all the work she hasdone for the Utah County Old Time Fiddlers. Rhea hasdone a lot of work for our chapter, and has done it formany years. After dinner, we had a wonderful jam. Thanks to everyone that helped that night.

The Utah County Chapter is starting to pick upnew members. I would especially like to thank JessecaNight for all the help she has given our group. She is amusical teacher and she brings a lot of students to thejams. Our group has been performing quite a bit herelately. We have some talented players and it’s been alot of fun. We have just recently purchased a newsound system (Mackie 150) that is amazing. I wouldlike to personally thank all the people that havesupported the Utah County chapter- we couldn’t do itwithout your help!

I would like to congratulate Jack Jeppson for beingelected chapter chairman of the Dixie Chapter; he willdo a good job.

The Pioneer Chapter held our annualMembership Drive Jam and Luncheon on Jan 7 atthe Pleasant Valley Library. Thanks to SusanAnderson, Joni Despain and Shelley Gardner forhelping with registration for new and returningmembers. We had a lot of people in attendance, andas usual, the music is especially good when we have

all of our members present. Jarl and Lillie Jacobsoncame for this event. The library allowed us to playvideos from the State Fiddle Contest on a widescreen, and at the luncheon, we asked them to crankup the sound so we could enjoy the good music fromthe award winners. These videos are available at thewebsite.

Our Chapter is experimenting with Satellite Jamsin-between our normal jams. A Satellite Jam is asmaller event, hosted in someone’s home, wheremembers can play in an informal setting. We havethree homes that have opened up for these jams. Some of these jams are invitation only events; othershave opened to all. It is encouraging to look forwardto playing with one another and developing strongerfriendships. These events also offer moreopportunities to learn the songs that we don’t havemastered yet.

Meagan Gardner was asked by her orchestrateacher to give a talk about the UTOF to about 200students at the Sandridge Junior High in Roy, Utah onThursday, Jan 26. The 200 or more students weregathered for the Beginning Orchestra Festival, andwere from many Junior High Schools around theregion. Meagan explained what our organizationdoes, and then was asked to play 3 songs to showwhat kind of music we play. She demonstrated hertalents with Saint Anne’s Reel, Whiskey BeforeBreakfast, and Drowsy Maggie. Another guestspeaker demonstrated playing fiddle style on a viola. This was a wonderful recruiting opportunity, andhopefully we will see new members from thispromotion. We appreciate the wonderful effortsMeagan has done to recruit other youth to the OTFA.

Dixie ChapterThe Dixie Chapter ended the year with quite a

couple of jam sessions. We elected a new Chairman. The lucky person is Banjo Jack Jeppson!! Congratsto him, he will do a fine job. I also want to thankRalph Peterson for his years of service as our Chair.Ralph has however, agreed to be co-chair to fill inwhen Jack is not here. Jack and Jeanette have nowleft on their two month concert tour with RodErickson they go on every year at this time. Speakingof which, we had the pleasure of having Mr. RodErickson come to our jam and sing and jam with us.What a treat it was to listen to such a talent! Thankyou for coming to our jam, Rod!!

Rod EricksonRod Erickson is a truly great entertainer who

recorded his first yodel song in the early 70’s,following a year of training under the renowned operainstructor, Dr. Jean Wardian, Head of the GonzagaUniversity Music Department in Spokane,Washington.

This songreached the “Top Ten” world wide within a month. This release was followed with “Yodel Sweet Molly”,“Cattle Call” and “Cannonball Yodel”, all threemaking the charts. In 1976, “Going Home”, a song hewrote, went “Top Ten” in Canada and had the biggestreaction ever for a Country song in that country. Hewas “Top Pick” in Billboard Magazine, andconsidered a virtuoso in yodeling; “The Best” by theGavin Report.

Rod has made many TV appearances and was onWSM’s Ralph Emery Show, as well as Paul Harvey’s“The Rest Of The Story”. He was on the MGMShow in Nashville, and toured the SoutheasternStates with Grandpa Jones, Stringbean and othersfrom the Grand Ole Opery. Editor’s Note:We’ve featured 90 year old Dale Pendleton beforeas being a role model, mentor and teacher in thePioneer Chapter. We appreciate the legacy that heleaves behind for our young people. In this article,Dale details the legacy that was handed to him.

Dale Pendleton has been writing a book. Chapter10 is called “Music- A Way of Life”, and in thissection, the much younger Dale describes aconversation with his father while sitting in hisblacksmith shop. Dale asks his father how hedeveloped his talent for music. William JoshuaPendleton described the process, beginning frombeing a young boy in Salt Late City, where he learnedto play the Trumpet in brass band. They would marchand play for various celebrations.

Then Dale asked his father about the violin andguitar. Father Joshua answered that his father before

him played the violin in the town orchestra, and forthe town dances. The grandfather had taught him a lotof that music, and would allow Joshua to play withhim at the town dances. As the conversation movedto the house, it progressed into a jam session, withFather Joshua playing the fiddle and Dale playingback up on the guitar. This was a usual occurrence inthe Pendleton home.

Dale’s mother Millie had a beautiful singing voice, and she taught all the kids how to sing and memorizethe words. Dale is the youngest of 6 siblings, eachone picked up the musical bug. Father Joshua taughtthe children how to play the various string instruments(fiddle, guitar, mandolin, etc.) and when they gotbetter, he let them play in his band. Dale recalls all thechildren enjoying playing and singing together aroundthe home, church, etc. Music was a way of life.

Joshua Pendleton came from a family of 13children, 11 of whom went on and married those who

would also sing and play, and at the two day annualfamily reunions at their parents home, they would playsuch music that it would spill out into the town ofWanship, into the community and at a dance for thetown. Joshua played in a band and would often beasked by the Bishop to play music for the dances heldin the Hall. Bill (Joshua) would play the fiddle at theseevents, with other musicians playing guitar and piano. There would be a children’s dance earlier in the day, followed by the adult dance in the evening that wouldstretch to midnight.

Joshua could also play the cornet, organ, piano, mandolin and banjo. The old violin is still prized bythe family, but many of the other instruments were lostor sold along the way. One of the saddest days for

the family was when Joshua had a stroke and couldn’tplay anymore. Dale’s main regret of his father’s musicis that he didn’t have a tape recorder or some way tocapture the hundreds of songs that Joshua could play, and the several that he composed. Dale’s spent hisadult time trying to capture that legacy in print, andalso recording the songs as he can from memory, andalso passing it on to others, in the form of passion andsupport for those learning to play. Maybe that is whyDale is always so gracious and gentle with thechildren in our group, because he’s honoring his fatherwith every child that he shares his music with.
