SCAVENGER HUNT 2011

It’s time for the annual OCC Scavenger Hunt, a summer of looking for images that fit the new list of 24 scav-enger hunt categories, things like “insect” and “bliss”, and “graffiti”. Some are more challenging than others. You have all summer to find one image for each category. Then you name and size then according to the rules (enclosed) and send them on CD to John West by September 13. One of the rules is to not make improvements with Photoshop. This is all for fun, not for competition, and no one’s picture gets identified. John will trans-form all our images into a wonderfully entertaining slide show for our viewing pleasure at the monthly general meeting on September 26. That meeting will be a dinner meeting, held at the Chambers Restaurant at Pano-rama City, so it’s a special night out for OCC members and their guests.

Later in the summer we’ll get information to you about menu options and reservations, but for now, just take a look at the rules of the hunt and the list of categories and begin collecting your images. If you work better un-der pressure, you can wait until early September for all this, but some great summer photo ops may have passed by then. Have fun!

“Give us Your Best Shot!”

This year’s planning committee for the Scavenger Hunt (Ann Rockway, John West, Nandita Adhia, and Al-lynn Balch) has come up with the 2011 list of categories for the hunt. We are assuming that all images will be shot and submitted digitally. Here are the rules:

1. Make one exposure for each category listed on the form and briefly describe each image.

2. Images must be new images taken after receiving this announcement. They may be taken in any order.

3. The self- identification image tells the compilers (and your audience) who the images belong to. You can be creative (photo of self, things that reflect your interests, etc).

4. No post-production in Photoshop or other image manipulation software is permitted, other than sizing and naming the image file as described below under Image File Properties.

5. Put all your images on a CD as jpeg files, and mail to Scavenger Hunt 2011 c/o John West, 3808-C 22nd Ave. SE, Olympia, WA 98501. The CD and the form listing your images must be received by Tuesday Sep-tember 13. E-mail submissions will not be accepted.

Images taken under conditions other than these are not eligible for entry into this Scavenger Hunt.

Image File Properties:

1. Images must be submitted in JPEG only. (No RAW or TIFF files allowed)

2. Image resolution: no more than 1024 pixels wide or 768 pixels high at 72 DPI (no cropping – resize the actual file). Check with John if you have questions about this.

Filename: Save each image as follows: 2 digit number of category-_your name_category (example: 02_JohnWest_grafiti.jpg). This makes it much easier to compile the digital slideshow of all our images.

The Scavenger Hunt Committee will assemble the digital images into a slideshow to be shown at the Septem-ber 26 OCC general meeting. This meeting will take place at Panorama City’s Chambers Restaurant as a din-ner program. All members of OCC are invited to attend the dinner show and can bring a guest. We’ll send out information about menus and reservations in an upcoming newsletter and on the OCC website www.olympiacameraclub.org.

We look forward to seeing how varied and creative the 2011 images will be. Your involvement will help make the scavenger hunt a fun program for our September 26 meeting. Everyone in the club is encouraged to partici-pate. If you have questions contact Ann Rockway at 866-1415, John West at 459-3183, Nandita Adhia at 510-673-9383, or Allynn Balch at 360-556-9427.

OCC TO VISIT THE PALOUSE by Frank Townsend (reprinted)

The rolling hills of the Palouse is fairly unique to Eastern Washington and may be the most photographed area of the state. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday, June 24, 25, and 26 the Olympia Camera Club will be doing its share of photographing the area. This will be a little different than most of our ventures, for one you'll need to make your own room reservations, you will be given maps with locations previously scouted and can join the group any where along the way on any day. Some may leave Friday morning, others on Saturday, and some may return at their own choosing. Many of the spots are too small for a large number of cars to pull off at one time so car pooling once in the area is encouraged, this is also why everyone will have maps so that large cara-vans won't form.

The closest hotels are in Colfax, the Siesta Motel is only $62 but is small and nearly full. Call 509-397-3417. Best Western is about twice that but has more room. Call 509-0397. Sally Parker and Linda Foss are the leaders of this expedition and have sent everyone an email about the trip, please contact them for more in-formation or contact me.

In Sprague, off I-90 on Hwy 23, on your way to the Palouse, see dozens of old rusted vehicles.

THURSTON COUNTY FAIR PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBIT

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

By Allynn Balch, Photography Exhibit Superintendent

This year’s Thurston County Fair runs from Wednesday, August 3rd to Sunday, August 7th. Each year the cam-era club sponsors the fair’s Photography Exhibit, as well as providing volunteer assistance for print drop off, judging, hanging, and staffing the exhibit during the fair run. I have had a sign-up sheet circulating for the shifts I have available, and I plan to continue to do so at the next few meetings I am able to attend, as well as the June General Meeting.

Feel free to email me at [email protected] if you have any questions or are interested in help-ing out, but haven’t seen the sheet yet. I will then let you know what shifts are available. Also, don’t forget to submit your images as well!

It’s time to plan for your 2011 Thurston County Fair submissions ,

Deadline is Saturday July 30th, see exhibitor’s guide for complete information.
