Your Invitation To The First Annual District 17-N Convention

All Lions, Lioness-es, LEOs, and guests are invited to the 1st Annu-al District 17-N Lions Convention to be held in Pittsburg, KS on March 27 and 28, 2015. The convention hotel will be the Lamplighter Inn & Suites, 4020 Parkview Drive, Pittsburg, KS 66762 phone: 620-231-8700, located on the north end of Pittsburg on US Highway 69. Our Special Guest Speak-er will be Past Interna-tional Director W. Allen Broughton from Brent-wood, TN.

The pre-convention activity starts on Friday, March 27th and includes

an evening with our vis-iting Past International Director Broughton and his wife Lion Emily. We will begin by meeting at one of the famous chick-en restaurants in Pitts-burg at 5:30 pm. Each guest can order off the menu and is responsi-ble for their check. We would like to know ap-proximately how many will be attending so we can make arrangements with the restaurant for a meeting room. At 7 pm we will be returning to the hotel for light snacks, music, and conversation.

On Saturday, registra-tion begins at 8:30 am. Seminars start at 9 am

and will run through 11:45. We will break at noon for our convention banquet featuring a key-note speech by our vis-iting international guest. Following the banquet will be a business session to elect new officers and foundation directors. We will conclude the day with training sessions. We plan to conclude the convention by 4 pm so attendees will have time to travel home.

You will notice the low prices on the registra-tion form. The commit-tee has worked hard to make this an affordable convention for all. There will be no registration

fee, no charge for the Fri-day night reception for the PID at the hotel and the banquet meal is only $9, which is below our cost! How you may ask? The committee will be selling ads for our con-vention booklet to offset the convention expenses. So please ask your club to consider sponsoring an ad.

More information coming soon,

Thank you, District 17-N Convention Com-mittee

Co-chairs PDG Terry Weldin and PDG Chris Bauer

These pictures were taken from last week’s evening meting. Lion Keith McGuire is an engineer at CST Stor-age and their company has a plant in Hanoi, Vietnam. He has been looking after a couple of his coun-terparts from Vietnam who are in America visiting other CST plants. There were able to attend a couple of Lions meetings and gave a program last week which was about their country and the people who live there. Below are pictures of them making their presentation. Also pictured are Lion Keith and President Maggie Keene in-troducing and welcoming them.

Also pictured are other guests that Lion McGuire brought with him. His wife, Kathy, son Ben, and a couple who we are friends with from church, Travis and Katrina Ball (properly identi-fied, of course with visitor badges.

On behalf of District 17-N, Lion Patrick Laham, pictured on the left, presented Viola Lions Club President, Shane Beebe with the Club of Excellence Award. Lion Shane pictured on the right was one of the cooks at the 58th Annual Viola Lions Club Sau-sage Supper, held February 17th.

Pictured are two of the local Leos Cub members who helped with the sausage supper. The Viola Club fed over 1,200 people plus 100 volunteers.

Viola Lions

Leos are going to Hawaii!! They have begun fund-raising and are working hard to make this trip a real-ity. Here’s how you can help:

1. Cost to feed a Leo per day in Hawaii is $45.00 per Leo per day (5 days total)

2. They will be traveling as a group and we want them to have “look-alike” backpacks to help (a) keep them together and (b) keep them organized! ($35.00 per Leo)

3. Lodging will be approximately $400 - $500 per Leo based on the number of people per room (we are trying to get 3 Leos and a chaperone for each room).

4. We want each Leo to have 10 Leo pins for trading ($30.00 per Leo)

The Leos are NOT expecting a free vacation! Our kids have already paid for the airfare and are now working to pay for the rest. No funds given by Lions are used for the sponsors – your support is for the Leos! There are currently 12 Leos from Kansas plan-ning to attend.

If your club can help in any way, it would be ap-preciated. Please send donations to the Kansas Lions Foundation with Leos to Convention in the memo line. If you could also let me know it was sent, that would be greatly appreciated!

Road Show at their regular Monday night meeting on Feb 3, 2015. Lions members and community mem-bers brought in odd and old objects to be given a once-over by a panel of area antique enthusiasts. It was a fun evening and a great community event.”

Wichita North West LionsLion Patrick Laham

presented Diabetes Awareness Program to Wichita North West Li-ons Club February 19th.

March 26 is the Amer-ican Diabetes Associa-tion Alert Day and is a one-day “wake-up call” that encourages the American public to get healthy, get serious and raise diabetes awareness. By taking a Diabetes Risk Test at http://www.stopdiabetes.com/get-the-facts/risk-test.htm-l?loc=stopd-footer, you can find out if you are at risk for developing Type 2 diabetes. By educating your friends, family and

members of your community about diabetes, you can help those around you take action toward a healthier lifestyle.

Ways for Lions to get involved:

Organize a Strides: Lions for Diabetes Aware-ness event

Partner with local healthcare providers to orga-nize a diabetes screening

Volunteer at a children’s camp for diabetes Hold a healthy cooking demonstration for peo-

ple with diabetes Organize a community vegetable garden to en-

courage healthy eating

For more information, visit the National Diabetes Education Program’s website.

Health HappeningsPDG Marvin Greenberg is finally home. After a trip to Grand Island on Thursday to re-

move the kidney drain, we were able to check out of the Red Cloud Hospital and head home. It was a long day but worth it. Yesterday the Angel Care team came to the house to change the wound vac dressing so that is all set up for 3 days a week. Other than that, he is doing well, walking is slow but he is getting there.

The wound vac that we had been waiting on for 8 days finally showed up on Wednesday afternoon and had been waylayed by the snowstorm on the east coast somewhere.

December 5th was a long time ago, and he was only home for 4 days after I broke him out of the local hospital, before he was admitted to Mary Lanning Hospital in Hastings. After his stint there he moved to Red Cloud swing bed at the hospital for almost 3 weeks before everything was finished (Antibiot-ics, antifungal, and the renal drain) to come home. The portable wound vac gives him the freedom to go wherever he wishes. He commented that it is like carrying a purse and he has never done that before.

Thank you to all for the cards, calls, visits, and the many prayers during the last 2 1/2 months. All were very much appreciated.
