The Rams were formerly known as Petersfield United and

the club enjoyed a spell in the Isthmian League from the

mid-1980s until the early 1990s, before they had to reform

as Town in 1993 to be able to take their position in the

Wessex League.

Peter De Sisto was the new chairman and hopes were

high of immediate success when he brought in former

Tottenham and England defender Gary Stevens as

manager. However the club failed to prosper and within

months Stevens had left and matters came to a head in

1995 when Petersfield Town Council refused to grant a

lease on the Love Lane ground.

Local businessman Geoff Goad together with existing club

officials including Ken Longland, Dave Ayre and Mark

Nicoll took over the club so that it could remain playing at

the Love Lane stadium and appointed Tony Adams as

Manager and although he managed to keep the club up in

his first season, relegation to the Hampshire League came

at the end of the 1996-97 campaign.

Ernie Turrell became manager and built up a squad

centered on local players but after he resigned midway

through the season, Mick Catlin and Bruce Kendall took

over but could not prevent another relegation.

In 1999-2000 Paulsgrove pipped the Rams to the Division

2 title but Petersfield were placed in the newly created

Premier Division for the following season. A run of mid-

table finishes then followed, with Bruce Kendall taking sole

charge of the team for the 2001-02 campaign and he was

replaced by Mark Burton in 2003-04.

In 2004-05, Petersfield joined the newly formed Wessex

League Division 2 and finished in fifth place. Mick Cripps

then took over as manager for two seasons but the club

found itself towards the lower end of Division 2, which was then renamed Division 1.

Paul Ryan became manager at the beginning of the 2007-08 season and this prompted a spell of

improved performances, which brought a fourth placed finish in Wessex League Division 1 in

2008-09 and two appearances in the final of the Portsmouth Senior Cup.

In the summer of 2010 first team coach Matt Short took over as manager and he was replaced by

Ian Saunders in the summer of 2012.

Seasons 2013-14 and 2014-15 are certainly the stand out period in the history of Petersfield

Town for their supporters. After years of false dawns and struggle those two campaigns brought

silverware and new club records galore.

The 2013-14 campaign brought promotion from the Sydenhams Wessex League Division 1 and

‘the Rams’ won the league title – only taking over at the top of the table for the first time all

season from Andover Town on the penultimate round of matches.

It was Petersfield’s first promotion won on the pitch since 1982 and striker Robbie Tambling was

the golden boot winner for the division with 40 goals. The club also reached the final of the

Wessex League Cup and the quarter finals of the Hampshire Senior Cup – both record runs for

the Rams in those competitions.

Manager Ian Saunders’ side won the team of the month prize on three occasions and they broke

the club’s record score several times – eventually setting a new best on January 25, 2014, when

they beat Andover New Street 14-0 at Love Lane.

The 2014-15 season brought more title-winning glory when the Rams secured the Sydenhams

Wessex League Premier Division to take them up to step four football – the highest level the club

has played at in its history in non league football.

Again a number of team of the month awards were won by Saunders’ side and midfielder Ed

Dryden was signed by Premier League side Stoke City during the second half of the season.

Strikers Warren Hunt (33 goals) and Andy Todd (31 goals) both passed the 30 goal mark for the

season.

The club were runners-up for the second year running in the Wessex League Cup and they were

also runners-up in the Portsmouth Senior Cup.

Over this two year period the reserve team added to the silverware haul for the club. In 2013-14

they won the Wyvern League Shield and in 2014-15 they won the Wyvern League Challenge

Cup.

Season 2015-16 was another year of firsts for Petersfield – it was the first time they had played in

the Southern League and they went on to finish in 13th place in Division 1 Central.

They played in the FA Trophy for the first time too and had their best ever run in the FA Cup to

date – reaching the third qualifying round before losing to National League South side St Albans

City.

Saunders left the Rams a little over a week before the start of the 2016-17 campaign and Andy

Neal and Gary Lines had short spells in charge of first team matters before John Robson was

appointed manager in October 2016.

However, he could not reverse what had become a disastrous season and the Rams finished

bottom of Division 1 Central, gaining only nine points all season.

It wasn’t all doom and gloom though – the first team reached the final of the Portsmouth Senior

Cup at Fratton Park, home of Portsmouth FC, and the reserve team won the Wyvern League’s

Division 1 East title and the Wyvern League Challenge Cup.

In the summer of 2017, Jim Macey was appointed first team manager and the Rams were placed

back in the Wessex Premier Division following their relegation from step four football.

After a poor start to the campaign Jim Macey resigned and Mark Summerhill took the helm. He

worked tirelessly but could not turn around the season, and the club finished bottom of the

Premier Division for a second successive relegation.

Back in Wessex Div One the goal in 2018/19 was to stabilise the club both on and off the field,

and this was achieved with Mark Sumerhill taking the team to a 15th place finish on 40pts, well

clear of a relegation position, plus a Quarter Final appearance in the Russell-Cotes Cup, whilst

off the field several key additions were made to the team of dedicated volunteers.

There is every reason to be optimistic that the club’s fortunes will continue to improve in season

Page 12: THE OFFICIAL MATCHDAY PROGRAMME OF AFC TOTTON THE … · In 2004-05, Petersfield joined the newly formed Wessex League Division 2 and finished in fifth place. Mick Cripps then took

Despite a hat-trick from striker Craig Feeney the Stags FA Trophy run ended abruptly after they conceded six at Lodge Road against Bet-victor Premier South outfit Yate Town this afternoon.

The team news saw Louis Langdown make two changes to the eleven that started against Weston Super Mare last time out with Thomas Boyle coming in for Alex Cull in goal and Matt Simm coming in for Stuart Mott at right back. On the bench for the Stags was Richard Bakary, Liam Callaghan, Liam Farrugia, Mitchell Byrne, Adam McWilliam, Silvano Obeng and Jack Smith.

The Stags started quite brightly when Ollie Bradley set up James Granger with a cross that took a deflection in the 2nd minute and Granger fired just wide.

The home side then had their first opening when captain Nicholas Peare headed wide from a free kick. Yate then opened the scoring on 11 minutes when Peare lifted a ball over the Totton defence and Bradley Webb had time to pick his spot before he fired past Boyle.

Totton had a half chance when Nicholls hooked a pass over the Bluebells defence and Feeney got free on the left of the area and he fired the ball across the face of goal in the hope that someone would get a touch, but all to no avail.

Yate then strung together a little move that ended with Luke Spokes firing inches wide from 20 yards.

In the 25th minute Totton conjured up an equaliser when FEENEY managed to hold off two defenders after Alex Haynes on the right side of midfield lofted a ball over the top for him to run onto and the Stags marksman made no mistake bagging his10th goal of the season as he fired past Adam Forster from around 10 yards.

Yate almost regained the lead on the half hour mark when Webb forced Boyle into a save from close range, but 30 seconds later Yate were back in front when Louis Britton had time and space to score from close range. Mayson Evans almost made it 3-1 with he attempted to lob Boyle, but the ball went just over the bar.

In truth there had been too many loose passes from Totton, who were not at their best and four minutes before the break Dave Allen stepped up to collect a ball and as he attempted to nod the ball forward he had it stolen off him and this led to Britton firing into the top left hand corner and putting Yate into a strong position at the break.

Yate started the 2nd half better and they had a couple of half chances when Peare's low cross was smothered by Boyle and when Britton's header from Webb's cross went straight into Boyle's arms.

If Totton were to stand any chance of getting back into this game they needed to score the next goal and this is what they did in the 52nd minute when Matt Hartman's cross found FEENEY at the back post and Feeney took a touch before firing onto the far side of the net.

I fully expected Totton to go at Yate now and put them under pressure but this didn't happen, in fact Yate had a chance to add a 4th from a free kick in a central position, following a foul by Pip Nolan, fortunately Peare's kick was well off target. Then Webb put a cross into the box that Peare met with a header, but Boyle easily saved it.

The Stags were right up against it once again after sub Mitchell Byrne allowed Britton to steal the ball from him and he went on to make it 4-2. It really was so frustrating for Totton as they were creating their own problems.

A few moments later it was 5-2 when Peare picked the ball up about 40 yards from the Totton goal and he motored forward without a single challenge being made by the Stags and as he entered the box, he sent his shot past Boyle and Tottons mountain was now unsurmountable.

It got worse because two of Yates substitutes combined to make it 6-2 when Michael Bryant’s shot was parried to the feet of Olly Mehew who made no mistake from a yard out on 78 minutes.

Craig Feeney was a little unfortunate not to bag a consolation goal when he rounded Forster only for his shot to be deflected over the bar. However, in injury time FEENEY did manage to score a consolation for the Stags, and in doing so complete his hat-trick, but it couldn’t disguise what was a bad day at the office for the Stags.

Full time: Yate Town 6 AFC Totton 2

Let’s not make too many excuses Yate deserved the win. Totton were well off their best and they made mistakes that were punished. It didn’t help that the Stags were scrambling around to try and find an emergency keeper yesterday after ALL THREE KEEPERS picked up injuries this week. Both Alex Cull and Matt Hall picked up injuries whilst training with Saints, then incredibly the Stags young Polish keeper Amadeusz Skrzynairz broke his hand in training on Thursday evening. The club managed to bring in Thomas Boyle from Hampshire League side Infinity minutes before the 12pm deadline. So it is fair to say the circumstances were far from ideal.

When your team are near the foot of the table, its been said many times by people in football that things often go against you, and that was the case again today at the Snows stadium for AFC Totton, who were on the end of a ‘controversial’ refereeing decision that had a huge effect on the final outcome of this game.

The team news saw Louis Langdown make three changes to the starting eleven that lost 6-3 at Cinderford Town in the FA trophy last week. In came Alex Cull, Jack Smith, Adam McWilliam and Silvano Obeng they replaced Thomas Boyle who returned to Hampshire league side ‘Infinity’, Matt Simm, Matt Hartmann who dropped to the bench and James Granger who is injured. The Stags substitutes were Richard Bakary, Liam Farrugia, Liam Callaghan, Mitchell Byrne and Matt Hartmann (as mentioned above).

The Stags started Ok with Craig Feeney almost getting in on an under hit back pass but Cinderford keeper Andy Hannah arrived just in the nick of time to clear. Then Adam McWilliam managed to put a ball into the Cinderford box that was cleared.

On 8 minutes though, the Stags were a goal behind when Jack Smith’s challenge on James Harding saw the Cinderford No 10 stumble and referee Brian White pointed to the spot. Andy Lewis made no mistake and the visitors had an early lead.

The Stags did retaliate when Ollie Bradleys cross was just out of reach of Adam McWilliam. For the next 10 minutes or so Cinderford looked in control albeit without creating anything much in terms of chances, that was until the 19th minute when a nice move down the Cinderford right saw Blaine Waugh play a ball to Ben Watkins and Watkins put over a cross that was headed over by Harding.

Totton tried to get forward and Ollie Bradley put two crosses into the Cinderford box but their back line just cleared up quite easily.

On 28 minutes the Stags shot themselves in the foot when Matt Boziers pass was intercepted and suddenly the Stags were in trouble Harding found himself inside the box with Cull attempting to narrow his angles but Harding calmly slipped the ball past the Totton keeper and it was 2-0.

To be fair to the Stags they reacted well and Feeney got down the left and he put over a low cross that was just out of the reach of Silvano Obeng. Then a quickly taken free kick by Bozier played in Feeney inside the box but the Stags top scorer tried the stick the ball into the far side of the net but the ball just rolled the wrong side of the post from Totton’s point of view.

Cinderford went back on the attack and fortunately for the Stags Harding headed wide once again.

Then Totton reduced the arrears on 41 minutes when Ollie Bradley’s left wing cross skimmed off of the head of a Cinderford defender and the ball went out towards the Totton right where Alex Haynes picked it up and Haynes put in a cross, come shot and the ball was touched home by the outstretched leg of OBENG from 6 yards, despite the close attentions of Cinderford’s Andy Lewis.

Totton were really looking lively and they finished the half really strongly with Pip Nolan’s deflected cross being volleyed into the keepers arms by Feeney, then after Bozier was fouled a couple of yards outside the box, McWilliam stepped up and sent his free kick low towards the left hand post, but keeper Hannah got down well to save. Then in added time at the end of the 1st half Feeney sent in a shot that lacked sufficient power to trouble Hannah.

Half time: AFC Totton 1 Cinderford Town 2

At the start of the 2nd half Totton looked as if they meant business and the 1st chance of the 2nd period saw Bradley drag a shot wide from just outside the box.

Cinderford were not offering much in attack but chances were generally rare in the 1st quarter of an hour of the 2nd half. Although it must be said that despite trailing Totton were looking capable of getting something from the game.

Then came that controversial incident that suddenly changed the complexion of the game. As i said in my opening notes, when you are struggling for results and you are near the foot of your table things often go against you, and that certainly was the case on the hour mark. Trailing 2-1 and looking very capable of getting at least a point from the game the Stags were on the wrong end of a decision that left them suddenly chasing a two goal deficit. Cinderford were on the attack when their right back Waugh picked up the ball on the right, roughly 18 yards out, he played the ball towards the penalty spot where Harding was arriving and the Foresters No 10 just got ahead of Alex Haynes and Harding touched the ball allowing Cull to get down and touch the ball out to his left and as he touched the ball away Harding went over him and referee Brian White awarded a ‘spot kick’. The Totton players, management and supporters were incensed by the decision and despite their protests the penalty award stood and Lewis stepped up to finish with aplomb.

For a while things looked like they could turn nasty, especially after a challenge in front of the away dugout that lead to a bit of pushing and shoving between both sets of players. The penalty award had suddenly changed the atmosphere and the stags goalkeeping coach Steve Hollick was sent from the dugout.

From facing a huge task the Stags were now left with a absolute mountain to climb after another mistake from allowed Waugh to send over a cross from the right that Totton keeper Cull failed to deal with and the ball was touched home at the back post by Harding.

At this point many of us were fearing a real thrashing as it looked as if the Totton players minds were all over the place since the 2nd penalty award. However, credit where credits due, on 75 minutes they got themselves a free kick around 30 yards from goal and MCWILLIAM sent the kick over the wall and into the top left hand corner of the net. It was a brilliant free kick that would have graced any game at any level of football.

Cinderford had a half chance when Harding’s attempted lob went over the bar, but Totton came again and Feeney headed over from a corner on the right. Then in the dying moments Totton pulled another goal back when a ball over from the left was met by sub Liam CALLAGHAN who swiveled and shot into the roof of the net from 6 yards out. It was a great finish, it reminded me of David Platts goal for England v Belguim in the 1990 word cup (The older fans will remember that). Unfortunately for the Stags, it counted for little as time ran out, preventing them from making a miraculous comeback.
