Chapter 1 - My Story – How to go from Couch
Potato to a Life with a Mission
Everybody feels like the Odd One OutStanding from
time to time. The question is how you deal with it.
Are you focusing on how it makes you stronger orhow you do not fit in? Most of us have had the
“pleasure” of experiencing this early in our childhood
during school. If you did not fit in, they beat you
down…either with their words or their fists. So a lot
of us tried avoiding being the Odd One OutStanding
…at least outside of our homes. It is time for us to
embrace the Odd One OutStanding inside of each
and every one of us, being proud and showing how
awesome we really are.

The Initial Mistakes
Throughout school I was an average student. During
university, my grades slipped since my ADD started
to developed. Throughout school, I was forced by the
school requirements to do internships. These helpedme sell myself later when it came to finding a job.
My first resumes were just as silly as most of the
ones employers receive today: focused on myself,
what I wanted, written without much thinking or
focus on what the employer wanted to achieve. So
why would an employer want to hire me?
The First Learning Experiences
During the time I worked and studied in the USA, I
started to collect books on career, management and
self-improvement. One of these books was “Don’t
Send a Resume” by Jefferey J Fox. This book

I was hired as a recruitment consultant helping
people find their next position. During that time I
learned a lot about how recruiters think about
candidates and about the client. The focus is to get
the candidate that is the best fit for the company
who is paying the recruitment agency, not the bestcompany for the candidate. I learned that you can
have the best positions, the most well-known
companies on your CV/resume and still be
considered dangerous material in an employer’s and
recruiter’s eye if you only stayed one year here and
two years there without a good explanation.
I took in all the tips and tricks I could while I was
working there. I liked the aspect of helping someone
finding a new position but I did not like the aspect of
not really being able to care for the candidate as
much as I wanted.

In the following years I studied the area of career on
a deeper level, read even more books that promote
the “Odd One OutStanding” principle and ended up
being hired by one of the most important IT
companies worldwide: the Oracle Corporation.
I prepared very well for the interview, knowing
my outcome, my reasons why and making sure
that the interviewers feel safe with me and
confident that I am the right candidate . I was
invited to a meeting with my future supervisor. I
considered that meeting the final interview. Little did
I know that the decision of hiring me was already
taken after the two previous phone interviews, one of
which came out of the blue at 7pm one evening.

How to Convince even Before you Get to
the Face-2-Face Interview
I focused on connecting with the interviewer on
a personal and professional level. During the so-
called interview, he was showing me around theoffice, introducing me to my future colleagues and
then having the final talk to convince me to work for
the company. During that conversation, I asked
questions to see how close I was to getting the job,
since I could not believe they would hire me without
having met me personally before. One of these
questions was: “What is necessary for me to do or
say so you are convinced I am the right
candidate?”
The interviewer’s response was ”The decision has
already been made.”

Throughout the next few years, I focused on
developing success stories for my resume. Two of
these stories were Becoming the Top Achiever of the
Foundation Bootcamp and Getting an Award
throughout my time at the company.

nature, and then to work hard at it, is about as
near to a formula for success and happiness as
the world provides. One of the fortunate aspects
of this formula is that, granted the right career
has been found, the hard work takes care of
itself. Then hard work is not hard work at all.”

However, my plan was not too detailed to really get
me what I wanted. The problem was however that I

was not 100% sure of what I wanted to do for a
living. So I took what I could get and what sounded
great to me. I wanted to work in marketing, since I
studied international marketing. But the thought of
it did not seem to give me the drive to go 100% for
that goal.Since I was not sure what I wanted to do, I just went
for being the best. But it was not what I am that
passionate about, I was working very hard on a
constant basis for about 12 hours a day … until I
burned out. I burned out because I was
exhausting my body with a job that I was not
passionate about and a diet that was truly
depleting my body from energy, because I was
not living in the city I love and because I let my
negative emotions run my life.
By accident, I stumbled over a book that showed me
a way to release the stress and physical pain that

was caused by the fear of losing my job. I developed
that fear because I was not 100% fulfilled by my job,
had trouble with a few co-workers and did not have
enough energy to be 100% successful at my job.
Using that technique freed me from that fear as well
as the physical pain in my shoulders and neck thatwas caused by the stress the fear brought up.
The Wake-up Call
During the toughest time in my career, I was given a
wake-up call. I was invited to a program from Tony
Robbins, my idol. It cost me about 1,000 EUR. Even
though I was already in debt, I decided to invest in
this program and reaped the rewards within a week
of attending the program. It all came from a
change in perspective and attitude toward
myself, money and life which led me to release

my debt, save up more money, develop a mission
for my life and find my purpose.
After I came back from the program, I felt like I am
meant to do more than just selling software. I kept
telling myself and people that I did not want to workat that company and in this position anymore.
Guess what?! One week after I came back, I was laid
off. First, I was shocked of course. After a second of
thought, I smiled, grinned actually. My face was
happier than my supervisor’s and the HR Director’s
who then told me that I would receive a severance
pay and two more months of pay. This helped me be
released from all of my debts, including those from
university. People could not believe that I was happy
with the situation since usually people are desperate
when being let go. That was in March 2009.

A Successful Plan
During the week before I was laid off and for the
following two months, I developed a plan for
finding a new career that makes me happy and
wealthy, a career that would give me the power tolive and work legally in Los Angeles, California, a city
I adored since I lived there the first time in 2003.
Initially, I wanted to work in marketing, and then
consulting. On the way back from an interview in
London, I pondered about the ideal career, what I
love doing, what I hated and what I did well in my
past. Then it hit me! I want to be a Personal
Development Coach. At that time, I decided to do it
not for profit but to get experience. I had doing
coaching friends and family for many years with
great results but decided to take it up professionally

that day. I still went on different interviews getting
closer and closer to coaching.
Then I went to an event by Joseph McClendon III,
Tony’s head trainer. During this event, I got to know
a gentleman, who taught me an interesting way of approaching employers which you will learn about in
this book. Here, I learned a lot of tools and strategies
that I could add to my toolbox for my coaching. The
day after I came back from the event, I had the final
interview with VMware, an international IT company.
The same day, I received two job offers, one with
VMware in Ireland and one in London. About a week
later, I packed my bags (so to speak) into my car and
drove up to Cork, Ireland. That was in June 2009.
Throughout the weeks, I had developed a plan
(which we will look further into in the coming
chapters) for my successful coaching business

which also included the position I held with
VMware as a stepping stone. Every task I did at
that company in that position and every time I
volunteered my services for the company, I
related to the ultimate goal of my coaching
business. In the first six months, I managed to beone of 300 top sales people in whole of VMware
worldwide and was invited to the President’s Club.
During the day, I was working 100% for VMware.
During the evenings, nights and weekends, I was
working 100% on setting up my business for about
six months. Once I was visiting Los Angeles in
November 2009, I started interviewing consultants
over the phone and face to face. After deciding on
being a coach instead of a consultant, which was
facilitated by Jairek Robbins, the son of Tony
Robbins, who himself is a powerful coach, I signed
up with the International Coach Academy in
Australia and completed about 90% of the

certification requirements within 6 months.
Furthermore, I also completed the exam part of the
EFT 1 Certification within only a few weeks.
In the meantime, I am developing my own company
with which I am following my heart, passion andmission. In my company, I am creating revenue and
income on several levels ensuring my safety.
Additionally, I am building up a second company
together with a strong partner in Los Angeles.
This book will make you familiar with the best of the
strategies that combined are proven to create results
that lead to a job offer, a career and a life with a
mission. I included exercises and worksheets that
guide you to the ideal career and mission for you.

You are running the risk of burning out if you
are exhausting your body with a job that you
are not passionate about and a diet that is truly
depleting your body from energy, and letting
your negative emotions run your life.
All it takes is a change in perspective and attitude toward yourself, money and life which
can lead you to release your debt, save up the
money you want, develop a mission for your life
and find your purpose.
Develop a plan for finding a new career that makes you happy and wealthy (not just
financially but more importantly, emotionally).
Include the position you are now holding as a
stepping stone.
