The Hells Canyon Mule Days board of directors is pleased to announce that Wallowa County native Julie Kooch is the Grand Marshal for the 39th annual Hells Canyon Mule Days.

Julie has deep Wallowa County roots going back to her grandparents, Henry and

Katherine (McCrae) Davis, and Max M. and Bertha (Womack) Mink and, Julie’s par-ents, Melvin and Maxine (Mink) Davis, were born and raised in the County.

Julie and her brother, Ron, were born in Enterprise and raised on the family ranch in the Joseph Creek Canyon. Julie spent her growing up years in the canyon attending the one-room Lewis School and then the folks rented a ranch in the Joseph area dur-ing her high school years and Julie graduat-ed from Joseph High School in 1962. She attended the University of Idaho and later received her Master’s Degree from Eastern Oregon State College. Before retiring from teaching in 2010, Julie had been a teacher in the Enterprise school for over 30 years, and followed in the footsteps of her mother and grandmother, who both taught in one-room schools in Wallowa County.

Julie has always had a love and passion

for the Canyon Country and what she calls “cowboying.” Over the years she has ridden these rugged canyons, rims and breaks to help check, move and gather cattle for local ranches.

She has recorded her memories of her years in the Canyon through her books. The first one, My Life on Joseph Creek followed by Riding the Canyons, tells of life growing up in this remote region. They make for a great read and record the history of area.

Julie has been part of Hells Canyon Mule Days for years. Going back to the early days of the event. She participated in many of the driving events and weight pull contest. She and her teams have escorted many Mule Days grand marshals through the Chief Joseph Days and Mule Days parades. In the past few years Julie is the official greeter at the main entrance gate and sells admission buttons to locals and visitors alike. She knows most all the locals by name and makes visitors feel very welcome.

We are very grateful for Julie and her involvement and energy she gives to Hells Canyon Mule Days.

THANK YOU JULIE KOOCH

The Observer, AUGUST 30, 2019 HELLS CANYON MULE DAYS PAGe 3

Let the Games, Good Times and Family Fun Begin at the 39th Annual Mule Days! This year’s Mule Show will be three

full days of events that include classes for every age group and skill level. It is a fun family weekend and youngsters enjoy competing and showing their muleman-ship abilities as much as the older well honed contestants.

The gates open at 9:00 am on Friday with a line-up of driving classes including singles and teams. The afternoon events include the Trail Class in the warm-up arena and the Timed Trail Class in the main arena followed by the Log Pull and other fun events. Highlights of the week-end events include the Classic Jump-Off Challenge which is always a crowd pleas-er, and fast action events include pole bending, barrel racing, and the Fast Ass Express.

Don’t miss the free mule clinic at 9:00 am Saturday and 10:00 am on Sunday for special tips on training your mule. Before the Grand Entry on Saturday, the popular Kids Stick Mule and Boot Scramble Rac-es are scheduled. These two events are for kids (ages 4 - 9 years) who are spectators and everyone wins a blue ribbon and spe-cial awards to the winner of each heat.

During the Saturday afternoon show there will also be a contest for the oldest spectator and the spectator who has trav-eled the most miles to attend the show.

The weekend is packed full of mule related happenings and there is always something to see and do for the whole family. Visitors can enjoy strolling The Green and visiting with vendors, exhibi-tors and western artists.

Tennessee Mule Artist Bonnie Shields is the Featured Artist at the show. Shields is well known and her talents include drawing, painting, and sculpture. Shields is a longstanding member of the Cowboy Cartoonists Association, her “mule art” can be viewed at the show, as well as on her website at www.bonnieshields.com.

The Max Walker Memorial Cowboy Poetry Gathering will start at 6:00 pm Fri-day evening in the Indoor Arena. Come sit, enjoy some cowboy yarns and expe-rience traditional country music from a great line-up of poets and musicians. There isn’t an admission fee, but a $5.00 donation is suggested and will go to the Max Walker Memorial Scholarship Fund. Early arrival is advised as this quickly be-comes a standing-room-only event.

Saturday events not to be missed in-clude the non-motorized parade with this year’s Grand Marshal, Julie Kooch, lead-

ing the precession of riders, teams, pack-strings, local horse clubs, and former Grand Marshals. During the Saturday evening Memorial Scholarship Pit B-B-Q Dinner there will be western music to entertain the dinner guests. The Private Treaty Mule Sale will be in the indoor arena at 6:00 pm and the agreement of the sale is between the buyer and the seller.

The Saturday night concert is sched-uled for 7:00 pm at the historic OK The-atre in downtown Enterprise. Texas-Bred Musical Powerhouse Kristyn Harris will entertain and delight you with her show of country songs. Enjoy a great evening for the whole family!

The Dutch Oven Cook-Off is sched-uled on Sunday starting at 9:00 am with some great local and visiting teams work-ing their culinary magic. If you wish to enter, the Dutch Oven Cook-off packet is on the Mule Days website. Spectators are invited to visit team members and learn about traditional pioneer cooking. There

will be a People’s Choice category and the packet entitles samples of each team’s dishes, a vote on the best dish in each category. People’s Choice packets are limited and may be purchased during the Dutch Oven Cook-Off.

Since 1981 this annual event has been organized and implemented with all vol-unteer help. Over the years many people have given their personal time and extra effort for the success of this annual Wal-lowa County Tradition...

The Hells Canyon Mule Days com-mittee, realizing that its volunteers and show supporters are the life blood of this event and are often unrecognized for their valuable outstanding contri-butions and commitment to carry out many thankless tasks, established The Top Hand Award in 2006 to recognize one of its own and to extend a special “thank you”.

This year’s recipient is long-time show supporter Jay Connolly who has been the guy behind the scenes to be sure the sound equipment is installed and ready for the show announcer to entertain the crowd and keep the contestants lined out for their scheduled classes.

Jay is back to the fairgrounds at the end of Sunday’s events and removes the sound system, cleans and double checks

all of it so the system is ready for the fol-lowing year. He is also our IT guy and saved us last year, when the day before the opening show, the new computer, that had been programed and event files loaded along with contestant entries, crashed. Jay put his daily scheduled ap-pointments on hold and reprogrammed the computer, loaded all the show files and had the computer back to our show secretary that afternoon to reload the contestant entries before the opening of the show office the following morning.

Jay has a willingness to help, an easy going manner, and no problem is too big for him to take care of. It has been such a pleasure to work with Jay over the years and to know he is always there for the success of our show.

Mule Days is paying tribute to the true spirit of volunteering by presenting this year’s Top Hand Award to Jay Connolly and a big thank you to him for his time and dedicated efforts he brings to this event.

“We couldn’t do it without him!”

he cooking starts Sunday morning at 9:00 am with this year’s cook-off featuring a format, in which teams can enter one or two dishes, main dishes and/or desserts, which are judged individ-ually for each category.

A panel of celebrity judges will use Interna-tional Dutch Oven Society (IDOS) guidelines to

determine the Hells Canyon Mule Days Dutch Oven Cook-Off winners. There will be first and second place awards of $100.00 and $75.00 in each category, along with a gift basket for the People’s Choice winner. The People’s Choice packet entitles samples of each team’s dishes, and to cast a vote for the best dish in each category. People’s Choice packets are limited and may be purchased during the Dutch Oven Cook-Off.

This is a great event for spectators to watch the cook-off teams work their cooking magic, and the public is invited to visit with the team members during the cook-off.

Event co-chairs, Chris Lozier and Christina Lee Lozier, said the goal of this event is to have fun, demonstrate Dutch oven cooking skills, and introduce the public to the joys of Dutch oven cooking. ”There’s lots to learn from these seasoned

cookers and they enjoy sharing most all their secrets for true success of cooking in Black Pot” said Lozier.

This competi-tion is a fun event and geared for the novice or back-yard enthusiast that enjoys Dutch oven cooking and having a great time with other like minds.

Be sure to check out the Dutch Oven Diva shirts and visors all bedecked with

The members of the 2019-2020 Wallowa County 4-H Court are Codi Cunningham, the daughter of Collin and Jessie Cunning-ham; Carrin Yaw, daughter of Craig and Kathleen Yaw; and Katie Hoffman, daughter of Eylynn and Melissa Hoffman. Cunning-ham is entering eighth grade at Enterprise Junior High, Yaw is entering tenth grade at Enterprise High School and Hoffman is en-tering ninth grade at Joseph Charter School.

Their selection was announced at the awards program for the Wallowa County Fair. The girls will spend this coming year promoting 4-H across the county, acting as emcees for awards programs and working with community organizations as the offi-cial representatives of the Wallowa County 4-H program. At the Hells Canyon Mule

Days event, the trio will be in the downtown parade on Saturday morning handing out balloons to youngsters, and they will help serve at the Pit B-B-Q Scholarship Dinner Saturday evening. They will also be selling “Mule Chip Lottery” tickets to help sup-port the Max Walker Memorial Scholarship Fund. Make sure to buy your lucky number space from them on Saturday for a chance to win $250.00.

The HCMD show committee thanks the 4-H Court for giving their energy and sup-port to the Mule Days event, and wishes them a great year with all their 4-H activi-ties and projects!

Hells Canyon Mule Days Max Walker Memorial Scholarship Winners

The Hells Canyon Mule Days Board of Directors being focused on supporting the youth of our County are pleased to award three $1000.00 scholarships to three Wallowa County high school seniors.

This year’s scholarships were grant-ed to:

Michael Diggins, son of Bruce and Cyndie Diggens, from Wallowa High School and he will be attending Sheri-dan Community College in Sheridan, Wyoming, and major in Rangeland Management.

Emma Hite, daughter of James and Jill Hite, from Joseph Charter School and she will be attending Treasure Valley Community College in Ontar-io, Oregon, and major in Elementary Education.

Deidre Schreiber, daughter of Debi and Charlie Warnock, from Enterprise High School and she will be attend-ing Oregon State University in the fall of 2020 and majoring in Agricultural Education. Deidre is delaying her col-lege plans for one year. At the Oregon FFA Convention in March Deidre was elected to serve as a state FFA officer (Secretary), the ultimate success in the FFA realm at the state level.

Once again this year, there was a strong field of applicants and each one was very deserving. The committee was impressed by the diverse goals of Michael, Emma, and Deidre, and their character evaluation references, career choices and leadership qualities.

The HCMD Board of Directors congratulates each student and wishes them a successful and enjoyable fresh-man year as they pursue their college education.

The Max Walker Memorial Schol-arship program was conceived in 2005 to honor Max Walker, one of the founding members and ongoing sup-porters for the Mule Days event. To date, Hells Canyon Mule Days has awarded a total of $41,000.00 to Wal-lowa County students to help further their academic goals. The scholar-ships are funded by the Max Walker family, donations received at the Hells Canyon Mule Days Max Walker Me-morial Cowboy Poetry Gathering, and the Saturday Night Pit B-B-Q, also contributions from businesses and in-dividuals.

HCMD has awarded a total of $41,000.00 to Wallowa County high

school seniors...
