ODE TO KINGBy Gerald Kamke
Our country was dividedBy the sale of colored men.In the 1860s our nation was atWar once again.
Civil War discussions stillCarry on today. Both sides continue to see it in Their own special way.
God’s on our sideWar leaders say out of the blue.I don’t know how you feelBut I don’t believe it to be true.
At the dawn of the war,Lincoln opened two homes. They both remain and shouldBe covered with domes.
Wisconsin has one home; The other’s in Maine. We pray in Lincoln’s memoryThey’ll always remain.
The high quality of staffIs not found in all places.Their dedication and caringIs written on their faces.
I’ve been to them both. They’re the best of the best.Again – one is out East; The other’s in the Midwest.
The eagle soars over thisFacility in the USA.I pray it keeps flyingOver KING every day.

This does seem like an unusual winter, or so it feels to me. It is so nice though to have my bedroom
window open in the middle of winter. That cool breeze keeps the air feeling nice and fresh.
Before I forget to mention it, if anyone here in the Camp has anything they would like to say in this article, please mention it to me. If there is a memory from your childhood, military career, etc., that you would like to share with us, please let me know. This program can include your thoughts as well as mine and we might all enjoy it.
This month I want to give a big Thank You to our cleaning folks and the maintenance people. Each of these people have a lot to do as they cover their work area. We certainly appreciate all the cleaners and everything they do to clean up after us. The maintenance people are good about coming to solve a problem for us if something isn’t working around our area or if it’s one of the elevators.
And please be patient with the folks when they come to get the elevator going again. They don’t make the elevator stop working but they will get it going again. Folks, we do appreciate all you do for us each and every day. So, again, we say Thank You and God Bless to every one of you.
Something happened the other day that rather startled me. You know that we live with folks here that are dealing with various mind shortages. When
one of these dear people asked someone standing near them if they lived here or where is their room it really was a jolt for me.
You see, one of my sisters has contracted Alzheimer Disease. That was such a jolt to our family. None of us have ever had any problem like that before. It’s been about a year since she has been diagnosed. Last Easter when King became my home Jean became a member of a home committed to helping patients with serious memory problems.
My nephew says he is an orphan now because his father died several years ago and now his mother is gone but her body is still here. She has gone through many of the stages that we were told to expect. This situation has devastated our entire family and some of us cry a lot. But no progress is made whether we cry, holler or cuss about it. We still need to face reality and watch our precious sister slip away from us. And it hurts!!!
We know the day is coming soon when dear Jean will go home to Jesus. We cry now but we will cry harder then. Soon it will be a different cry. We will know that our dear sister is better than she has ever been. We will cry for our own loss. Eventually we will be strong again and will laugh as we remember some of the silly things we did together. Joy will return.
Memories and Thoughts
Cold
It is cold outside. It will freeze your hide.
Nothing will stir.I just go brrrrr.
It is eleven below. That is cold, don’t you know.
That don’t count the wind.Which is a spin.
It is forty below with the wind. And that is a sin.
The snow is blowing all over. You can’t see the clover.
The dog won’t go out.I just want to shout.
The fireplace is burning. And I am yearning.
For warm summer days to come.I am not dumb.
Then I can go outside.Without needing a tougher hide.

Genesis 12:6-8 relates how Abram commemorated his encounter with God at the sacred place at
Shechem, he is said to have built a shrine at the place where God appeared to him. In accordance with his faith the place had become sacred from hence forth. The reason for him building a shrine was to put a landmark that will speak to generation to come that the otherwise homogeneous space had been broken by the appearance of God. The space is now clothed with sacredness, so he built an altar. In other words the nature of this sacred place is a result of a mystery that took place in space and time. As Abram proceeded with his journey, he came to a place between Bethel and Ai, there he built another altar and invoked the Lord by name. This, in the view of the writer is another form of a shrine where by humanity identifies a place then dedicate it to the sacred and so differentiate it with the rest of the space around. It becomes sacred by virtue of it being dedicated to the sacred, our church buildings are shrines of that nature and many more shrines can fall in this category.
In Gen, 28:11-22 Jacob honored a place where he had a vision by setting a sacred pillar and poured oil on top of it , in other words he anointed it, after which he named it Bethel, which means ‘house of God’. Given the afore cited scripture texts, one can faithfully say a shrine is not just some human make-up based on anthropological symbolism rather it is a standing witness of God’s initiative in revealing himself to mankind. Behind the term
Shrine is humanity‘s expression of faith in God’s work of salvation.
In short a shrine is a sacred place where Gods presence is continuously made manifest to humanity. The directory of popular piety defines a shrine as “a sign of the active and saving presence of the Lord in history and a place of respite in which the people of God on its journey to the heavenly city (cf.heb 13:14), can renew its strength for the pilgrim journey.” In a shrine we see a sacred place put aside for worship while a pilgrimage occupies sacred time put aside to make a journey of prayer.
Invitation to the National Shrine of Wisconsin, USA
The emergence of the national shrine of Wisconsin dates back to the 1850s when immigrants from Holland, Belgium and Germany arrived in the area around Green Bay, which came to be known as the Bay Settlement. While there are a number of miraculous events associated with this shrine since 1861, the Peshtigo fire of 1871 remains historical and has continued circulating on the lips of pilgrims visiting this shrine. Behind it is an experience of the saving hand of God that was witnessed by the people of the time in Wisconsin. The fire destroyed everything around the area of

the shrine living the five acres which are part of the institutions that existed on that piece of land. How this came to be has remained a mystery and a cause for declaring the place sacred. Since then, the shrine has attracted pilgrims. The pilgrims who have visited this shrine have witnessed spiritual and physical benefits. While emphasis should not be the search for miracles, it is worth mentioning that the spiritual and social gains that the pilgrims have received at this sacred place are enumerable. https://www.shrineofourladyofgoodhelp.com/
The shrine of Our Lady of Good Help is a place where one can consolidate his/her faith, grow in faith and receive consolation in times of affliction. The intervention of God in the history of the country is once again relived upon coming into contact with an atmosphere that embraces the sacred. The pleasant synthesis between grace and nature is an experience that one can associate with a visit to such a shrine. From the view point of the author, here is a sacred place that deserves human response to God by offering him sacred time.
All in all, shrines have been a cultural heritage from the time of patriarchs until today. They have existed in different forms and under different religions but all that they point to is the sacred. Pilgrims have transformed their lives by stepping into the sacred space. Such opportunities create wonderment and awe. The availability of a national shrine in the country is a blessing which we need to embrace and create a culture that will always be. If you have never been to the shrine of our lady of good help let this be a challenge and consider such a journey to the shrine of our lady of good help as a priority.

The Dive from Clausen’s Pier by Ann Packer Carrie Bell has lived in Wisconsin all her life. She’s had the same best friend, the same good relationship with her mother, the same boyfriend, Mike, now her fiancé, for as long as anyone can remember. It’s with real surprise she finds that, at age twenty-three, her life has begun to feel suffocating. She longs for a change, an upheaval, for a chance to begin again. That chance is granted to her, terribly, when Mike is injured in an accident. Now Carrie has to question everything she thought she knew about herself and the meaning of home. She must ask: How much do we owe the people we love? Is it a sign of strength or weakness to walk away from someone in need?
The Coldest Night by Robert Olmstead Henry Childs is just seventeen when he falls into a love affair so intense it nearly consumes him. But Mercy’s family disapproves, and the two young lovers flee to New Orleans to play out their passionate affair, until Mercy’s father hunts them down, takes his daughter home, and sends Henry running for his life. Descended from a long line of soldiers, Henry turns to the one place that might afford him an escape. He enlists in the Marines and, practically overnight, is thrown into the decisive moment of the Korean War, arriving on the eve of the brutal battle of the Chosin Reservoir, with temperatures of fifty degrees below zero and an enemy force far beyond the scope of his imagining. But the challenges he meets upon his return home, scarred and haunted, are greater by far.
Outfoxed by David Rosenfelt New Jersey defense lawyer Andy Carpenter spends as little time as possible working as a lawyer and as much time as he can working on his true passion, the Tara Foundation, the dog-rescue organization he runs with his friend Willie Miller. Lately Andy has been especially involved in a county program in which prison inmates help train rescue dogs to make them more adoptable, benefiting both the dogs and the prisoners. One of the prisoners Andy has been working with is his client Brian Atkins, who is serving a five-year term for fraud but has just four months left until he’s up for a parole hearing. Brian has been helping to train Boomer, an adorable fox terrier the Tara Foundation rescued from a neglectful owner. Brian and Boomer are clearly a terrific match. In fact, Andy hopes that Brian will adopt Boomer himself once his sentence is up.
But one day, Andy is shocked to discover that Brian has used Boomer to make an ingenious escape, and man and dog are both long gone. The next day, Brian’s wife and the man whose testimony helped convict Brian are both found murdered. Brian himself is caught and arrested for the crime, though he forcefully protests his innocence. Suddenly Andy finds himself with a client in desperate need of defense and a new dog in Boomer. And as he starts to dig deeper into the murder and the events leading up to it, Andy realizes that he may be putting them all in far more danger than anyone knew.
Belong to Me by Marisa de los Santos A devoted city dweller, Cornelia Brown surprised no one more than herself when she was gripped by the sudden, inescapable desire to leave urban life behind and head for an idyllic suburb. Though she knows she and her beloved husband, Teo, have made the right move, she approaches her new life with trepidation and struggles to forge friendships in her new home. Cornelia’s mettle is quickly tested by judgmental neighbor Piper Truitt. Perfectly manicured, impeccably dressed, and possessing impossible standards, Piper is the embodiment of everything Cornelia feared she would find in suburbia. A saving grace soon appears in the form of Lake. Over a shared love of literature and old movies, Cornelia develops an instant bond with this warm yet elusive woman who has also recently arrived in town, ostensibly to send her perceptive and brilliant son, Dev, to a school for the gifted.
Carte Blanche 007 by Jeffery Deaver James Bond, in his early thirties and already a veteran of the Afghan War, has been recruited to a new organization. Conceived in the post-9/11 world, it operates independent of M15, M16 and the Ministry of Defense, it very existence deniable. Its aim: To protect the Realm, by any means necessary. A Night Action alert calls James Bond away from dinner with a beautiful woman. Headquarters has decrypted an electronic whisper about an attack scheduled for later in the week: Casualties estimated in the thousands, British interests adversely affected. And Agent 007 has been given carte blanche to do whatever it takes to fulfill his mission…

The Fun Continues in Stordock Hall. With the holidays behind us, our fun certainly did not slow down one bit. Our January got fired up with music and entertainment from Concertina Tex, Copper Box Duo, and our monthly birthday party events. We had fun doing winter arts and crafts with our intergenerational group, and our own arts and crafts groups. We rang in the New Year with a 2019 Welcome party sponsored by the King Recreation Committee.
