Number Sense 101 - A sense of what numbers mean
- Understands relative magnitude of an amount
- Make comparisons among quantities
- Flexible and fluid with numbers
- Ability to perform mental math
- Flexible with problems
- Determine reasonableness of answers
- Ability to choose strategy based upon
numbers in the problem
Number Sense Routines Counting Around the Circle
Ten Wand Dot Pattern Routines Ten Frame Routines Rekenrek Routines
Ways to Make a Number Today’s Number Mental Math
Counting Around the Circle - Start with any number, state the rule ( +2, -3, x4,etc)
- Everyone in the circle states the next number in
- the pattern - - Estimate what number the last
person might say
Ten Wand - Make a “ten wand” with 5 red and 5 green linking cubes
- Break the wand into two pieces, hide 1 behind your back
- - Students look at the part visible, and
- determine the hidden part
Dot Pattern Routines 1. Dot Card Flash
2. I wish I had...
3. Dot Card/Ten Frame Match
4. Combination Match
(combos to make that number)
5. 1 More, 2 More, 1 Less, 2 Less
Use dice, playing cards, and dominos
too!
Dot Pattern Video 1. How does the teacher build student
fluency with small numbers?
2. What strategies are the students using
to build meaning of the numbers?
3. What questions does the
teacher pose to build understanding?
What do you find interesting
about the video?
Ten Frame Routines -Look, Quick
-Make My Number
-Say The Two Digit Number
-Number Strings
(Friendly numbers)
Ten Frame Video How does the teacher build student
fluency with small numbers using ten frames?
What strategies are the students using
to build meaning of the numbers?
How do the students demonstrate
composing and decomposing numbers?
What do you find interesting
about the video?
Rekenrek Routines
- See and Slide
- Sum It Up (Make sums of any
number)
- It takes two to build a number
- I wish I had...
Rekenrek Video What instructional strategies does the teacher
use to engage the students in the mathematics?
How does the teacher use
rekenreks as a tool to build
fluency?
What do you find interesting
about the video?
Ways to Make a Number Routine
- Make the daily number as many ways as possible
- Decompose into expanded notation
- Various groupings of ones, tens,
hundreds, thousands (13 tens 2 ones)
- Using a pattern
- Other ways- coins, tallies, etc.
Today’s Number - When is 10 large? -When is 10 small?
- Make 10 using 3 addends. -Divide 10 in half.
- - Make 10 by subtracting two numbers.
- - Double 10.
- Divide 10 into 4 equal groups.
- What is 10’s relationship to 4?
-How much is 10 groups of ten?
Today’s Number:
10!
Mental Math Routine Solve 26+27 mentally.
How did you solve?
What strategies did you use?
Can you solve more than one way?
How would you solve 26+27=?
Mental Math Routine Allowing students to solve problems in their mind &
sharing efficient strategies with one another
-Students sit together
(promotes discussion)
- - private think time, hand signals
- - Students share, teacher records
How would you solve 26+27=?
Mental Math Routine Be purposeful in your equations!
Making ten: 6+4=
Combine ones to make a new ten:
8+12=
Counting on/back: 77+4=
Decomposing into tens & ones: 22+14=
Compensation: 9+11=
Mental Math Video What strategies do the students using to solve
26+27? Are any of them surprising to you?
How does the teacher record each
strategy to provide access for the class?
What do you find interesting
about the video?
Thank you! Tabitha Savage, Ed.S.
