Ariana Neshat,
It has been a joy every year to watch as you prepare for Nutcracker with the Foundation
of Arts. From 2011 when you were a Soldier, to Party Girl, to being a Servant in party with
a mischevious partner, to Angel, to Waltz, and to Snow over these years, now in your fi nal
Nutcracker you are Christmas Star and Angel. Dance has given you more than piroettes and
fouettes. It has created life-long friendships, helped you gain important life skills such as
physical and mental endurance, what it means to lead and to help others, and perchance
most importantly, shine a light as to future endeavors as you pursue your love of dance.
Love you beyond the known universe,
Mom
Dear Cast and Crew of Nutcracker 2019,
You are all AWESOME! The costumes are spectacular - Thank you Ms. Sametta. The
choreography is wonderful - Thank you Ms. Abi for your work with my roles of Christmas
Star and Angel this year. Every single person in the cast has put forward their best feet (pun
intended,) and it will show as we share this performance with the community.
With much love and appreciation,
Ariana Neshat
A HEART FOR THE ARTS
Yet at the heart of the original creation is that Word (call it Love, call it Grace, call it Peace …) that essence which is lodged somewhere within each of us that longs for ultimate expression. If we choose to allow it to grow we’ll be given help. If we choose otherwise we won’t be forced. If there is such a thing as a “dark corner” of God’s nature then I think it’s God’s refusal to go back on the promise of “the creation’s freedom to love or not.” -Fred Rogers
All this talk about Mr. Rogers got me thinking about ways we can all continue his
legacy of asking the question, “Won’t YOU be my neighbor?” I really think that’s what
the FOA does as soon as you step into a role in a production or a class, participate in
an outreach program or attend an event. While Mr. Rogers used guests and puppets
to grow this expression, at the FOA we use artistic projects to lock arms together
and struggle toward creating art and community. This year in particular, we have
emphasized unity and excellence as, piece by piece, we layered choreography with
rehearsals, costumes with lighting, and set with props. We framed this project
with intentional choices to behave in ways that show love for each other and a high
expectation for ourselves in every way.
We’ve chosen to allow this essence that Mr. Rogers said is lodged somewhere in each
of us to grow – and I believe we’ve been given help for it to fl ourish – here at this
place called the FOA. If you made (or make) this choice, too, then thank you. You are
the essence of the arts at the FOA.
I hope you enjoy your holidays, beginning with The Nutcracker Ballet.
With a Heart for the Arts,
Kristi
