Theconference

Nurture groups haveexisted for over 40years. They were theresponse of MarjorieBoxall, educationalpsychologist in the InnerLondon EducationAuthority, to a state ofemergency in theLondon Borough ofHackney. Children werebeing put forward forspecial schools as‘maladjusted’ or‘educationallysubnormal’ inoverwhelming numbers.

Who should attend:The conference is open to nurture staff, education staff, health staff, social workers, police, family support workers and all who areinterested in effectively supporting vulnerablechildren and their families.

While a few children really need and benefitfrom such provision, Boxall looked behindthe labels and showed that many childrenhad simply not had adequate emotional andsocial support from their earliest months tomeet the demands of school life. Placed insmall part-time groups with two staff, andgiven the experiences they had missed withthe understanding and support of the wholestaff group, the majority made rapidprogress and were ready to move back totheir base class in less than a year. Nurture groups quickly spread by word of

mouth. Staff understood Boxall’s reasoning. With frequent meetings, recording of

progress, discussing what worked, overseveral years they devised an assessmentschedule, the Boxall Profile, which as oneteacher said “Confronted with a child whoseanxiety-provoking behaviour makes nosense, the Profile is where you start. It givesyou insights and suggests points of entryinto the child’s world.”

Danny SweatmanThrough the eyes of an ‘Eagle’After completing a teaching degree atCanterbury Christ Church University,Danny Sweatman began his teachingcareer in Egerton, Kent working in a smallrural primary school for three years. In2009, he moved back to Norfolk where heset up a nurture group at Aylsham HighSchool.

The ‘Eagles' nurture group is a smallsupportive class of up to fifteen studentsrun by Danny and supported by a learningsupport assistant and a lead interventionteaching assistant.

The students are carefully selectedaccording to their individual holistic profile ofneeds identified from primary school andthrough discussions with parents/carers, aswell as using the Boxall Profile assessmenttool.

Danny and staff understand it is crucialfor our students to have a comfortable, smooth and successful transition tosecondary school and have a range ofinduction opportunities to support this. Theaim from the start was to create a nurturingethos within a mainstream school where allstudents feel valued, safe and happy to givethem every opportunity to develop socially, emotionally and academically.

Now in their fifth year of nurtureprovision, the very first Eagles have flown thenest. In this keynote Danny will share their journey.
