THE NORTH TOWER

NARRATIVE EXPOSITION

• 36-37- Garth Feeney called his mother to let her know that she was in the world trade center attempting to escape

• 37-38- 911 system getting 3000 calls to report the explosion and there was no way out

• 44- Ed Beyea who was in wheelchair, had his friend, Abe Zeimanowitz stay with him while Irma Fuller went to go get medical help

• Pg. 35- Mike McQuaid is looking for a staircase among the collapsed ceiling and walls because they were two floors under the impact zone of the plane on floor 91.

QUOTES

• “much of the energy deflected from the speeding plane shot in waves down the skeleton of the tower” (page 20) : this gives a literal and figurative meaning, and personification of the towers give the human qualities as if they were a citizen of New York.

• “If the monumentalism of the towers made them a natural target, their very height added protection, not vulnerability. Gravity was part of the built in defense to the devastation of a big bomb” : because of the meaning of the towers, it made them a threat to other nations, but due to their height, they made the damages later on less severe.

QUOTES CONT.

• “His window faced north and saw the plane tearing through the skies, heading straight for the tower” : the plane ripped through the sky. The author could have used other words but he wanted to give a visual representation of how the plane was flying.

• Overall, the word choice in the quotes gives the reader an emotional understanding of what the towers really meant. The sky started blue and perfect and then the plane disrupted the perfect day. The author chose all of these words for a reason, showing their importance.

LITERARY CONNECTION

Announced by all the trumpets of the sky,

Arrives the snow, and, driving o’er the fields,

Seems nowhere to alight: the whited air

Hides hills and woods, the river, and the heaven,

And veils the farm-house at the garden’s end.

The sled and traveler stopped, the courier’s feet

Delayed, all friends shut out, the housemates sit

Around the radiant fireplace, enclosed

In a tumultuous privacy of storm

First line is them seeing the plane come in through the New York Sky

All the smoke was covering the sky

Every one stopped in New York and stared at what was happening to the towers

Everyone sitting around watching the TV as everything unfolds

Everyone is stuck in the building and they cant get out

BIG IDEAS

• Confusion-Workers thought a bomb first went off in the buildings

• Unaware-They didn’t understand the severity of what happened, so not all of them rushed to get out.
