The North Country National Scenic Trail
Its blue blazes someday will stretch 4,600 miles from New York to North Dakota.

Already half-finished. The NCT will become America’s longest hiking trail,
dwarfing the Appalachian, Continental Divide and Pacific Crest Trails.

It’s late Spring along the trail in the Lower Peninsula: the season for Canada geese to introduce their offspring.
![Page 26: The North Country Trail](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022081513/554d87a9b4c90567188b4f37/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
The Manistee River is a premier trailside habitat, a fine spot for spotting a Bald Eagle on patrol high above the River.
![Page 27: The North Country Trail](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022081513/554d87a9b4c90567188b4f37/html5/thumbnails/27.jpg)
27
Or a dying Salmon that had come up the River to spawn.
![Page 28: The North Country Trail](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022081513/554d87a9b4c90567188b4f37/html5/thumbnails/28.jpg)
28
Enormous White pine in Taquamenon State Park would provide enough lumber for five houses.
![Page 29: The North Country Trail](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022081513/554d87a9b4c90567188b4f37/html5/thumbnails/29.jpg)
The trail is being constructed by the volunteers of the North Country Trail Association.
![Page 30: The North Country Trail](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022081513/554d87a9b4c90567188b4f37/html5/thumbnails/30.jpg)
A trail crew from the Western Michigan, one of 25 chapters and nine affiliate hiking organizations creating and maintaining the North Country Trail.
Like this trail crew from the Western Michigan Chapter.
![Page 31: The North Country Trail](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022081513/554d87a9b4c90567188b4f37/html5/thumbnails/31.jpg)
The Western Michigan Chapter is allied with the Association’s 24 other chapters(including 11 in Michigan) and these affiliates:
In New York:• Finger Lakes Trail Conference
In Pennsylvania:•Rachel Carlson Trails Conservancy•Butler Outdoor Club
In Ohio:•Buckeye Trail Association•NW Ohio Rails to Trails Association
In Michigan:•Friends of the Jordan River Hatchery
In Minnesota:•Superior Hiking Trail Association•Border Trail Route Association•Kekekabic Trail Club•Parks and Trail Council of Minnesota
![Page 32: The North Country Trail](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022081513/554d87a9b4c90567188b4f37/html5/thumbnails/32.jpg)
Most of the construction is accomplished with hand tools. Crosscut saws are a favorite even with big logs because U.S. Forest Service rules prohibit the use of chain saws except by certified sawyers.
![Page 33: The North Country Trail](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022081513/554d87a9b4c90567188b4f37/html5/thumbnails/33.jpg)
A significant number of these certified sawyers are women who have completed the Forest Service’s rigorous training program.
![Page 34: The North Country Trail](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022081513/554d87a9b4c90567188b4f37/html5/thumbnails/34.jpg)
Yes, we shoveled, too
Some of our Western Michigan chapter members have cared for their sections of trail since Congress authorized the NCT in 1980.
![Page 35: The North Country Trail](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022081513/554d87a9b4c90567188b4f37/html5/thumbnails/35.jpg)
In Minnesota, a tired trail crew gets a little help from the Conservation Corps.
![Page 36: The North Country Trail](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022081513/554d87a9b4c90567188b4f37/html5/thumbnails/36.jpg)
Volunteers create a connection to the North Country Trail.
Like the Birch Grove Loop Trail north of White Cloud in the Manistee National Forest.
Near population centers, chapters often build loops for easy day hikes.
![Page 37: The North Country Trail](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022081513/554d87a9b4c90567188b4f37/html5/thumbnails/37.jpg)
The new loop gives access to the Loda Lake wildflower sanctuary with its spectacular display of water lilies.
![Page 38: The North Country Trail](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022081513/554d87a9b4c90567188b4f37/html5/thumbnails/38.jpg)
Volunteers not only have to build trail but clean up and repair it like in this flood aftermath project.
![Page 39: The North Country Trail](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022081513/554d87a9b4c90567188b4f37/html5/thumbnails/39.jpg)
Or removing eyesores from the trail side like this junker tossed into a ravine in the Lowell State Game Area.
![Page 40: The North Country Trail](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022081513/554d87a9b4c90567188b4f37/html5/thumbnails/40.jpg)
Testosterone-fueled machines, like all-terrain vehicles, ORVs and dirt bikes can raise havoc.
Unfortunately, signs don’t discourage all the boys and their toys.
![Page 41: The North Country Trail](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022081513/554d87a9b4c90567188b4f37/html5/thumbnails/41.jpg)
Yet the volunteers persist, even building a bridge through a driving rain storm.
![Page 42: The North Country Trail](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022081513/554d87a9b4c90567188b4f37/html5/thumbnails/42.jpg)
42
Let’s head out on the NCT, blue blazes will show the way.
![Page 43: The North Country Trail](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022081513/554d87a9b4c90567188b4f37/html5/thumbnails/43.jpg)
43
Starting from the East
In New York State
![Page 44: The North Country Trail](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022081513/554d87a9b4c90567188b4f37/html5/thumbnails/44.jpg)

46
Along the present route in New York State, the spectacular Watkins Glen State Park is one of the reasons the trail was named the North Country National Scenic Trail.
![Page 47: The North Country Trail](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022081513/554d87a9b4c90567188b4f37/html5/thumbnails/47.jpg)
47Much of the route in New York, follows the Finger Lakes Trail.
![Page 48: The North Country Trail](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022081513/554d87a9b4c90567188b4f37/html5/thumbnails/48.jpg)
48But deep woodlands and quiet streams also attract hikers.
