Greetings to all in the Name of the Risen Lord!May our worship this glorious morning celebrate the joy and hope, peace and presence, of our Lord Jesus Christ, raised to life for us. We welcome all, especially our guests. If you do not have a church home, please consider Divine Shepherd. We would love to have you as part of our family. Please take a minute and sign our guest book.

A prayer before WorshipThis is the day you have made, O Lord Jesus, a day of new life and eternal celebration! The stone is moved; death is defeated; heaven is open. As Your disciples first saw and believed Your victory over the tomb, so give us joy in the promise You made and keep for us: because You live, we live also! Amen.

The Lord’s SupperThe Lord’s Supper is celebrated by us this morning in the confession and gladness that, as our Lord says, He gives into our mouth not only bread and wine but His very body and blood to eat and drink for the forgiveness of sins and to strengthen our union with Him and with one another. Our Lord Jesus invites to His table those who trust His Words, repent of all sin, and set aside any refusal to forgive and love as He forgives and loves us, that they may show forth His death until He comes.

Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the blood of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty concerning the body and blood of the Lord. ( 1 Cor 11:28 ESV ) Holy Communion is a confession of the faith which is confessed at this alter.  Any who are not yet instructed, in doubt, or hold a confession differing from that of this congregation and the Lutheran Church~Missouri Synod, and yet desire to receive the sacrament, are asked to speak with Pastor Sturzenbecher.

Your Son, Jesus, to be the way, the truth, and the life that we may boldly confess Him to be the Christ and steadfastly walk in the way that leads to life eternal, through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, Who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Old Testament

Genesis 3:1-15 – Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’” 7

Page 8: The Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost · Web viewWord of God, Come Down on Earth Word of God, come down on earth, Living rain from heav’n descending; Touch our hearts and bring

But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.

And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden. But the LORD God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?” And he said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.” He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” The man said, “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate.” Then the LORD God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”

The LORD God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock and above all beasts of the field; on your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life. I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your

offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”P This is the Word of the Lord.C Thanks be to God.

Epistle2 Timothy 3:16-4:5 – All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.

I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths. As for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry. P This is the Word of the Lord.C Thanks be to God.

Holy Gospel P The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the sixth chapter.C Glory to You, O Lord.

John 6:63-69 – [Jesus said:] “It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. But there are some of you who do not believe.” (For Jesus knew from the beginning who those were who did not believe, and who it was who would betray him.) And he said, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father.”

After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him. So Jesus said to the Twelve, “Do you want to go away as well?” Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.”P This is the Gospel of the Lord.C Praise to You, O Christ.

589 Speak, O Lord, Your Servant Listens

Speak, O Lord, Your servant listens, Let Your Word to me come near;Newborn life and spirit give me, Let each promise still my fear.Death’s dread pow’r, its inward strife, Wars against Your Word of life;Fill me, Lord, with love’s strong fervor That I cling to You forever!

Oh, what blessing to be near You And to listen to Your voice;Let me ever love and hear You, Let Your Word be now my choice! Many hardened sinners, Lord, Flee in terror at Your Word; But to all who feel sin’s burden You give words of peace and pardon.

Lord, Your words are waters living When my thirsting spirit pleads.Lord, Your words are bread life-giving; On Your words my spirit

feeds.Lord, Your words will be my light Through death’s cold and dreary

night;Yes, they are my sword prevailing And my cup of joy unfailing!

As I pray, dear Jesus, hear me; Let Your words in me take root.May Your Spirit e’er be near me That I bear abundant fruit.May I daily sing Your praise, From my heart glad anthems raise,Till my highest praise is given In the endless joy of heaven.

586 Preach You the Word1 Preach you the Word and plant it home

To men who like or like it not,The Word that shall endure and stand    When flow’rs and men shall be forgot.

2 We know how hard, O Lord, the task    Your servant bade us undertake:To preach Your Word and never ask    What prideful profit it may make.

3 The sower sows; his reckless love    Scatters abroad the goodly seed,Intent alone that all may have    The wholesome loaves that all men need.

4 Though some be snatched and some be scorched    And some be choked and matted flat,The sower sows; his heart cries out,    “Oh, what of that, and what of that?”

5 Of all his scattered plenteousness    One-fourth waves ripe on hill and flat,And bears a harvest hundredfold:    “Ah, what of that, Lord, what of that!”

6 Preach you the Word and plant it home    And never faint; the Harvest LordWho gave the sower seed to sow    Will watch and tend His planted Word.

Thank the LordC Thank the Lord and sing His praise; tell ev'ryone what He has

done. Let all who seek the Lord rejoice and proudly bear His name.He recalls His promises and leads His people forth in joywith shouts of thanksgiving. Alleluia, alleluia.
