Page 1: The Nightmare - Painting Analysis

The horse that is sticking its head out through the curtains represents an individuals freedom, ambition and drive. In this instance it could signify the woman in the painting. The woman’s ambition or dreams could be being prevented by the gremlin that’s on the stomach.

The gremlin in the painting potentially could be representing the devil or a bad dream. The way the woman's body is draped over suggests that she is in distressed. This evil could be symbolising the unknown as the woman is asleep and is unaware that the gremlin in on top of her, this could be the case for everyone but we just don’t know.

The colour scheme is almost grey-scale. It is dull and there is not much variation with the colours that are used. There are lots of greens and browns and gives the painting a prehistoric feel.

The body language of the woman suggests that she is very feminine, from the way her toe is pointing all the way to the way her hair is flowing, it looks like a models pose. The woman in the painting does looks helpless in deep sleep or potential death. The way in which the gremlin is rolled up into a ball on her chest shows it isn’t doing any harm, yet the facial expression suggests other wise.

The white dress represents a pure and innocent woman. It can also represent virginity and wholesomeness that is within this woman. They way it is figure hugging is used to emphasise her femininity. The image is quite dull and this white dress is the brightest part of the picture so all eyes can be on the woman.

The red sheets represent the opposite of the white dress. Red has all sorts of negative connotations such as; evil, blood, fire, danger. On the other hand red is known to be the colour of love.
