users to paying customers from all over the world means
removing all possible barriers to making a payment. Adyen
worked with Travian to deliver a smoother payment flow and
increase conversion in two key ways:
1. Local payment methods
Credit cards are not the primary payment method in many key
markets around the world. Therefore, it was crucial for Travian
to accept targeted local payment methods – which Adyen is
able to offer through its single, unified payments platform.
“Adyen makes offering local payment methods much easier.
With them we support iDEAL in the Netherlands, which accounts
for approximately 60% of all online payments in the market, and
paysafecard, which has increased our volume of young gamers
and helped drive business in Czech Republic, Romania and
Slovakia.” Tanja Wenger.
2. One-click payments
Every extra step in the payment flow has an impact on
the conversion rate. To provide the smoothest payment
f low possible, Travian collaborated with Adyen to offer
“one-click” payments for repeat shoppers, using Adyen’s
tokenization service.
Travian Games unlocks the next payments
level with Adyen
With 150 million registered users across 200 countries and
territories worldwide, Travian is one of the world’s leading
online gaming companies. However, as it grew into a global
gaming powerhouse, its payments operations became
increasingly unwieldy. As it embarked on a search for a new
payments technology provider, it needed to streamline and
consolidate its payments operations, and improve conver-
sion rates at the checkout.
Reducing PCI scope with Hosted Payment Pages
Travian partnered with Adyen to integrate Adyen’s Hosted
Payments Page (HPP) solution. An immediate advantage of
this implementation was the massive reduction of the scope
of PCI Compliance for Travian. This is because with Adyen HPP,
all payment data is encrypted and stored on Adyen’s servers.
“Adyen managing our PCI compliance is a huge advantage for
us. We have freed up 10% of our internal resources, allowing our
team to focus on more strategic activities,” Tanja Wenger, Senior
Payment Manager, Travian Games.
Removing barriers to conversion
As a gaming company, Travian is not limited by geography
when it comes to adding new players. But to convert registered

certain markets, and make data-driven decisions to increase
authorization rates.
“With Adyen we have access to data which helps drive strategic
decisions. Following an A/B test we switched to Adyen local
acquiring in Spain, resulting in a 2% uplift in authorization
rates.” Tanja Wenger.
Growing globally
With Adyen as a partner, Travian’s payments operations are
a revenue generator for the company. And as it continues to
expand globally, the Adyen platform will provide the tools and
data needed to incrementally improve authorization rates,
deliver a seamless payment flow to gamers, and streamline
internal processes.
With this feature, a gamer enters their payment details only
once, after which this data is captured and securely stored on
Adyen’s server. From this data, Adyen generates a token, which
Travian Games then uses to charge subsequent purchases.
“Adyen enabled us to offer one-click payments to our customers,
making the checkout process much easier and faster. Following
the launch in October 2014, our credit card conversions went up
by 6%.” Tanja Wenger.
Increased authorizations through smart acquiring
Sometimes, it can be difficult for merchants to truly understand
whether a local or cross-border acquiring solution delivers
higher authorization rates. With Adyen, Travian was able
to A/B test local acquiring against cross border acquiring in
"After switching all credit card traffic over to Adyen, an evaluation revealed that in 9 out of 10 countries, Adyen's authorization
rates are higher, ranging from 1% to 3% in most EU countries and up to 9% higher in key markets such as Turkey. I can only
welcome this additional free revenue that Adyen has brought our business."
