A Few Words From Your President
Happy New Year, I.C.C. members! I hope that you had a great holiday season and wish you all the best in
2017 as we begin our journey to find what this year holds in store for us. For my first "President's Message" I
would like to highlight some of the accomplishments the club made during 2016 under the direction of our
past president and board, and discuss what some of our needs and wants are for 2017.
A word of thanks is due our past President, Michael White, for the fantastic job he did along with the
Board this past year! Michael led the charge to change our meetings from the fourth to the third Monday
of the month, which was greatly needed due to parking problems at our Knights of Columbus meeting
venue. Michael also was instrumental in securing personnel and funds for the updating and upkeep of
our ICC website. If you have not visited it recently, you will be impressed with the fresh look and the
more frequent updating it is now receiving. Thank you, Michael, along with the entire Board, for a job
well done!
We had great educational program talks given by our members at our monthly meetings in 2016. Our
Exhibit Night was an unrivaled success and we hope for the same at our September 18 meeting this year.
Auctions that are held during our meetings are always anticipated by our members. The ICC banquet,
held in December at the Castleton MCL Cafeteria, was a hit. A good time was had by all, and the gift ex-
change was exciting once again.
For those of you who are not members and are visiting our newly and GREATLY improved website, we would
love to have you join us at our monthly meetings on the third Monday of the month at 7 p.m. at the Indian-
apolis Northside Knights of Columbus hall, 2100 E. 71st Street, located just west of Keystone Avenue.
What are some of our challenges for 2017? Here are a few, but these are by no means comprehensive.
Our new Vice President, Steve Howery is in charge of coordinating speakers and dates for our education-
al programs at our monthly meetings this year. Please consider giving a talk at one of this year's
meetings. Contact Steve with your topic and preferred date.
Our membership numbers seem to be stagnant. New members make for a more vibrant and successful
club in the long term. How can we reach out to potential members, who might join us and be with us for
many years, if they would just come to one meeting to see what we are all about? A city of our size cer-
tainly has many interested collectors.
We have had the ICC's "investment" funds in CD's, the return on which has been negligible for many
years. Can we somehow get a better return on these funds? The ICC Board discussed this topic during our
budget board meeting on January 8.
Thanks to the entire ICC membership for trusting me to be your president this year, and to the ICC Board for
giving their time and talent to keep the club running smoothly.

November 21, 2016 - Minutes of the Indianapolis Coin Club Meeting.
Open –President, Michael White, called the meeting to order at 7:00 PM. 38 people signed in.
We met at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 2100 East 71st St.
Visitors – Our two visitors were Bob Nevitt, who likes Lincoln Cents, and Jim Shepherd, who
likes Morgan Dollars and Trade Dollars, and is now starting in on currency.
The Attendance prize was an 1881 Morgan Dollar, graded PCGS MS-64. It was donated by
our speaker for the evening, Mark Eberhardt.
The Secretary’s report and Treasurer’s report were accepted as published in the Planchet.
Committee reports – The Library Committee - J im Sukup, repor ted that some of the li-
brary books were returned.
Old Business –The slate was announced and a motion was passed to elect the slate by a unani-
mous vote. The new officers are listed in this newsletter. Jeff Bercovitz reported that the Indi-
ana Bicentennial Medals have been made and distributed to those who subscribed. The silver
medals were done in Sterling silver, (.925 fine,) with 91 small, 12 large and 49 sets of silver
and copper medals made.
New Business – President White reported that the Board voted to fund the maintenance of the
website. Kill Reports: Joe Boling attended the Chicago PACS and bought some Russian cur-
rency. He purchased two sets of 1957 notes for $15.00, and when he returned home he found
out they were worth $435.00! Mark Eberhardt reported his son found a $20 bill and a quarter
under the self-checkout at Kroger!!
The Educational Program – Mark Eberhardt, Treasurer, was the speaker for the evening. His
subject was the annual “State of the Hobby” update. He reported that the market is swinging
back to collector coins and away from bullion coins. He also reported that attendance at shows
is down, but auctions, especially online auctions are thriving! Also online dealer sales. Gold
prices have gone from $1,070/oz. last year to $1,220 this year, and silver from $14.10 to
$16.76. He also addressed the price of the Centennial gold coins from the US Mint. YN’s are
going for better coins, leaning toward investment pieces. The publisher of “Gray Sheets” was
bought out, and the prices listed more accurately reflect the market prices. Space limits my
ability to report all that Mark said, but the reader is encouraged to attend the meeting next year
to get the full report. It is well worth your time.
Great job, Mark!
After the Break. the Attendance Drawing and the 50/50 Drawing were held.
Auction – Joe Boling ran the auction. Assisting were Bob Bettcher, Donn Wray, Michael
White, Jeff Bercovitz and Vinton Dove.
The meeting was Adjourned at 9:00 PM.
Respectfully submitted,
Vinton Dove, Secretary
Wildman
“IN RECTO DECUS” translates as “HONOR IN DOING RIGHT”
Something for us all to strive for.
The story of the “Wildman” coinage is fascinating and worth pursuing. It is probably one of the most interesting symbols in numismatics. Coins with this symbol were minted from the mid-1500’s to the begin-ning of the 19th Century and the symbol appears on various denomi-nations from Brunswick-Luneburg, Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel and other German States.
The Wildman usually is shown with an uprooted fir tree but can appear with signs of the zodiac, supporting a shield with another Wildman and even holding a candle. The source of the Wildman seems to be based on a mythological character that was supposed to have lived in the Harz Mountains during the Middle ages. The symbol has another philo-sophical meaning that infers that all people have some of the “wildman” in them and thought this side of humanity was responsible for creative activities, the “Wildman” needed to be controlled to avoid his darker side.

This coin was formerly part of the Eric Newman Collection. I have more than a dozen different Wildman coins, although this is my favorite. Partly due to the philosophical message and also because of its prove-nance.
24 Mariengroschen, or 2/3 Thaler. There were 36 Mariengroschen in a Thaler.
Minted under the rule of Georg Ludwig von Hessen-Darmstadt, Prinz. Born in Darmstadt, Darmstadt, Hesse, Germany on April 25, 1669, died September 13, 1705 during the Siege of Barcelona. He is buried in Bar-celona, Spain.

Tuesday, December 5, 2017 – NO MEETING - I.C.C. Holiday Banquet
*For 2017 we are continuing the 'Attendance Prize' drawing at each monthly meeting as an added in-
centive for all I.C.C. members to attend as many meetings as possible and to encourage new member-
ship. Everyone attending each regular monthly meeting will receive a prize ticket when they arrive at
the meeting and sign in at the greeting table. The prize each month will be a 90% silver U.S. Half Dol-
lar (or equivalent or greater 90% silver content coin) The I.C.C. Board members and officers as well as
several I.C.C. members chose to act as sponsors and donate the monthly prizes rather than funding
them from our budget. You'll find the monthly prize sponsor listed below each monthly meeting date
above. You'll just have to show up to see what you may win!
Please keep this in mind each month; regardless of who is giving the monthly program and/or the topic, we owe it to that person and the
membership to remain quiet and pay attention during the program. It’s important that we respect the knowledge that is being shared with
us as well as the time and effort the speaker is donating to our club.
The same rules should apply to our monthly auctions; please remain quiet and pay attention.
Thank you.
